Summary: The hole-doped high-Tc cuprates have a superconducting phasediagram which can be effectively mapped by two variables.Firstly, Tc has a universal dependence upon doped holeconcentration. Secondly, the maximum Tc at optimum doping,Tc(max) appears to be dependent on charge distribution within theCuO2 plane and on the state of stress of the plane, both of whichare conveniently described in a single bond valence sumparameter. These ideas are illustrated in relation to cationdoping, oxygen stoichiometry and the effects of pressureparticularly with reference to the thermoelectric power. It isshown that this phase behaviour can be exploited to manipulateand optimise transition temperatures.

Summary: This chapter is devoted to some of the basic physical properties of those organic metals that are formed from large planar molecules such as the TTF (tetrathiafulvalene) molecule and its derivatives. Many hundreds of such organic conductors have been synthesized since the early 1970s when transport and structural studies of single crystal of TTF-TCNQ first caught the imagination of organic chemists, crystallographers and solid-state physicists.

Summary: We report the electric-field-dependent conductivity above afinite threshold field (ET) in the spin-density wave (SDW) stateof the organic conductors (TMTSF)2X, X=NO3, PF6. ET istemperature independent below half of the transition temperature(Tc). For most pristine PF6 samples ET increases substantiallytowards Tc, while for irradiated samples this rise becomes muchsmaller. The value of ET increases linearly with defectconcentration and the magnitude of field-dependent conductivitystrongly decreases. We discuss our results in the framework ofthe Maki's theory for the sliding SDW becoming depinned above afinite electric field and being responsible for theelectric-field-dependent response.

Summary: Anomalously large quantum oscillations found in the organicsuperconductor betha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 are summarized. Theoscillatory amplitude which is ten times larger than the residualresistance and very enhanced anharmonicity are unique among thestudies performed on (BEDT-TTF)2X family. Observed results showthat we have an almost perfect two-dimensional system. Theabnormally enhanced third harmonic observed in certaincircumstance is analyzed with a relation to the splittingmechanism. We developed also a new model to explain the splittingof Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations.

Summary: We present transport measurements under pressure on the(TMTSF)2FSO3 salt from p=1bar to 8kbar using a helium gaspressure cell, in order to clarify the pressure-temperature phasediagram of this compound. The interest in this TMTSF salt comesfrom the existence of non-centrosymmetric tetrahedral anion witha permanent dipole moment related to the presence of the fluorineatom. Two types of disorder can be involved in the metal toinsulator transitions at low temperature: one due to theorientation of the tetrahedra and the second to the position ofthe fluorine atom inside the anion. For all studied pressures asemiconducting phase occurs at T=90K via a sharp transition. Atlower temperatures, the activation energy decreases as thepressure is increased. At last, the resistivity saturates atp=8kbar from T=80K down to 10K where the metallic state isrestored. This new study shows that phase diagrams derived withthe use of the clamped pressure techniques should be revised.

Summary: We report the first non-umbiguous measurement of the non-linearconductivity in the field-induced-spin-density wave (FISDW) stateof the organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6. The general characteristicsof the non-linear conduction is similar to that found in ambientpressure SDW state. Threshold field (ET) is found in the range of1-25mV/cm. It increases with magnetic field but shows also avalley between two phases, which is probably related to thereentrance of phase boundary that is observed in (TMTSF)2ClO4.For a given magnetic field, ET shows a broad maximum around 1.2Kand decreases on further heating.

Summary: We have measured the resistivity on a number of high-qualitysingle crystals of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8 with x ranging from 0 to0.50. The effects of increasing x are (1) Tc falls sharply anddisappears at x=0.40+/-0.05, (2)the onset of linear behaviour inresistivity shifts to higher temperatures, (3)the hightemperature slope dR(T)/dT increases, and (4)the residualresistivity (normalized to the carrier density) satisfiesMatthiessen's rule up to x=0.40. Localization effects set inabove this value.

Summary: We have measured the absolute value and temperature dependence ofthe magnetic penetration depth lambda(T) of magnetically alignedcobalt and zinc doped YBa2Cu3O7-d using a commercial ACsusceptometer. For YBCO, our values of lambda(ab,0)=140nm andlambda(c,0)=1040nm agree with other published values. We findthat increasing the Co doping increases both the fluctuationeffects and the anisotropy ratio lambda(c)/lambda(ab), probablydue the reduction of coupling in the c direction, while dopingwith Zn substantially increases both lambda(ab) and lambda(c).Our data imply a large, highly anisotropic gap whose maximumvalue is 2delta(0)=10kBTc. All samples show a T2 term in bothlambda(ab,T) and lambda(c,T) at low temperatures (T<0.6Tc), inapparent disagreement with conventional s-wave BCS pairing. Thepossible explanations of this result are discussed.

Summary: We have calculated the electron-electron scattering contributionto the electrical resistivity in the two transverse directionsfor an anisotropic tight-binding cosine band. This type of bandstructure is thought to apply to organic metals such as theBechgaard salts. Simple expressions for transverse resistivitywere obtained using the standard variational method. In all caseswe found (alphaT + bethaT squared). For the b direction alpha=tbon(-2) and betha=tb on (-3), and for the c axis alpha=tc on (-2)while the expression for betha is more complicated. The aboveformulas are compared with experimental data and the effectiveCoulomb interaction for the Bechgaard salts is found to beU=0.64eV.

Summary: The resistivity along the conducting chains and the Hallresistivity are investigated as a function of the electric fieldin the magnetic-field-induced spin-density wave (FISDW) states of(TMTSF)2PF6 under hydrostatic pressure. Both resistivitiesdecrease with increasing electric field above the same welldefined threshold electric field in the order of 100mmV/cm. Weinterpret the nonlinearity by the depinning and sliding of theFISDW. The nonlinearity in the Hall resistivity is much strongerthan in the longitudinal one what we attribute to an unusuallystrong coupling between the FISDW and single-particleexcitations.

Summary: We have studied the influence of the magnetic field in the planeperpendicular to the highly conducting axis on the ohmic andnon-ohmic electrical transport in the spin-density wave state of(TMTSF)2NO3. In particular, we report (1)the angular dependenceof the magnetoresistance at different temperatures and in lowelectric fields and (2)magnetic field dependence of teh thresholdelectric field for the non-ohmic conductivity. We discussobtained results and compare them with the behaviour found in thespin-density wave state of the other (TMTSF)2X compounds.

Summary: We have measured electrical resistance of the organic conductorswith different anisotropy in the wide temperature range: quasione-dimensional (TMTSF)2X (X=ClO4, PF6 and NO3) andtwo-dimensional betha-(BEDT-TTF)2AuI2. We have looked for the Tsquared temperature dependence of the resistivity which isexpected for the electron-electron scattering in the standardtransport theory for isotropic systems. The agreements are, forall studied materials, satisfactory in the wide temperatureregion. We discuss and compare electrical resistivity curves ofthese materials.

Summary: We have looked for the electrical field non-linear effects in thenon-magnetic, semiconducting ground state, induced by the anionordering, of the organic conductors (TMTSF)2X, X=ReO4, FSO3. Wehave found that a very small, but finite non-linear contributionto the conductivity appears above a threshold field of the orderof 1V/cm. We contrast obtained results with the behaviour usuallyobserved in the Peierls-induced charge-density wave state.

Summary: The high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d has beendoped with oxygen at pressures ranging from a few mmbar to 4kbar.The doping is reversible by heat treatment in air at ambientpressure. Electrical-resistivity and infrared opticaltransmission measurements indicate that the carrier densityincreases monotonically with the oxygen annealing pressure. Thesuperconductor transition goes through a maximum near 90K and canbe reduced by at least 30K on both sides of the doping curve. Inthe oxygen-rich material the resistivity in the a-b planeexhibits a superlinear T on 1+x behaviour while the c-axisresistivity shows a positive slope in teh temperature dependence.

The principal characteristic of the underdoped regime issupporting the phase diagram based on the spin-charge separation. The contribution of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations at theO(2,3) sites have been observed in YBa1.92Sr0.08Cu3O7, in goodagreement with the inelastic-neutron-scattering results.

Summary: Structural, electrical and magnetic studies of ((TMTSF)1-x(TMTTF)x)2ReO4 alloys are reported. athey exhibit around x=0.5 an enhanced charge localization and a strong decrease of the anion-ordering (AO) transition temperature. The localization enhancement is attributed to a 4kF order of charge on the sites due to the alternate order of TMTSF and TMTTF molecules. This heteropolar charge distribution is suggested to weaken the 2kF bond response and thus to depress the AO transition.

The data provide strong evidence that Tl2Ba2CuO6 behaves as a weak-Josephson-coupled layerd superconductor, the discontinuity (i.e. a large jump in magnetization) arising from the destruction of Josephson screening currents between the planes at a field close to the lower critical field.

Summary: We report measurements of the resistivity, Hall coefficient, thermoelectric power and ac susceptibility of a polycrystalline sample of Co-doped YBa2Cu3O7 in which the grain boundary resistence could be drastically altered without affecting the properties of the individual grains. Our results show that although the shape and magnitude of the resistivity are strongly changed by the increase in grain-boundary scattering, there is no corresponding effect in either the thermoelectric power or the Hall coefficient. These results suggest that measurements of the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and thermoelectric power made on stoichiometric polycristalline samples should accurately reflect those of the grains.

Summary: We presents the electronic specific heat coefficient for several cuprate series determined from high resolution differential measurements. The coefficient is consistent with Fermi statistics, a low degeneracy temperature and at most a modest low temperature mass enhancement. We show the progression of the coefficinet with hole doping for La2-ySryCuO4 and the overdoped system Tl2Ba2CuO6+d, and demonstrate that the rapid fall in condensation energy in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x results from the growth of a pseudogap in the normal state quasiparicle spectrum. We discuss the effects of Zn doping on superconducting and pseudogap correlations in YBa2Cu3O6+x.

The transition temperature of the non-superconducting, as prepared sample can be increased by nitrogen anneals and was raised to a maximum of Tc=15.5K for the midpoint of the resisteive transition. The effect on the TEP of lanthanum and lead doping which increases Tc to 32K has also been studied, and comparison made with the universal curve of Tc against room temperature thermopower.

Matthiessen rule is obeyed as a function of x at optimum doping (d=0.05), but is violated in underdoped samples. As x and d are increased, Tc drops rapidly, and a superconductor-insulator transition is observed at a sheet resistance of approximately h/(4ee) per copper-oxygen bilayer, for various different combinations of x and d.

Summary: We report measurements of the magnetic-field dependence of the superconducting transitions of a series of underdoped YBa2(Cu0.97Zn0.03)3O7-d thin films with transition temperatures (Tc) of 9.4, 12.5, 23 and 56.5K. The resistive critical field shows strong positive curvature all the way down to 0.006Tc, similar to that observed previously for overdoped Tl2Ba2CuO(6+d) single crystals.

Summary: The resistive critical fields of several types of superconductor show an unusual increase at low temperatures. We argue that this arises from thermodynamic fluctuations which are strongly enhanced because of the reduction in condensation energy density U(H,T) by a magnetic field. This effect should be significant for any material for which UV(coh) Keywords: high-temperature superconductors, organic superconductors

Summary: We have measured the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity of theorganic superconductor betha-(BEDT-TTF)2AuI2 with disorderintroduced by x-ray irradiation. For defect concentrations lessthan 0.15%/mole Matthiessen's rule is obeyed. The long rangesuperconducting order is destroyed by 0.1%/mole and thetransition is completely smeared out above 0.2%/mole of defects.Two-dimensional localization for the suppression ofsuperconducting ground state is discussed.

Summary: We present the influence of a transverse magnetic field on thespin-density wave (SDW) ground state of the organic conductor(TMTSF)2NO3. Magnetic field increases the single-particleactivation energy. A finite magnetic field (Hc) inducesdiscontinuities in the magnetoresistance behaviour and its valueis temperature dependent. The threshold electric field (ET) forthe SDW sliding increases in a magnetic field. All observedeffects are strongly angle-dependent indicating that they aredetermined by the magnetic field component along the leastconduction (c*) direction. We discuss these results in theframework of a theoretical model for the SDW with large imperfectnesting.

Summary: We report a study of the transverse magnetoresistance propertiesin the spin-density wave (SDW) phase of teh organic conductor(TMTSF)2NO3 at temperatures down to 1.8K and in magnetic field upto 6tesla. The transverse magnetoresistance shows large effectand is highly anisotropic. We analyze our data in the frameworkof recent theoretical calculations by K.Maki. We suggest that theSDW with large imperfect nesting together with a periodic anionpotential might be responsible for the magnetic field effects.

Summary: From a detailed comparison of the electronic specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of YBa2Cu3O6-x we find broad numerical agreement between the normal state electronic entropy and the product between Wilson ratio times susceptibility times temperature over a wide range of x and temperature. This demonstrates that charge and spin excitations make a comparable contribution to the entropy and that the normal state pseudo-gap develops in both spin and charge spectra.
