Summary: Climatic change in the annual, warm half-year and cold
half-year precipitation data during the last 129 years, since
the beginning of the series in 1862 to 1990, at Zagreb-
Grič Observatory (g.w. = 45 49 , g.l. = 15 59 , H = 159
m a.s.l.) located in the northwestern part of Croatia has
been studied. The analysis has been deduced by using
tests for normality, "quick test" for stationarity according to
Schönwiese and Malcher, weighted moving average filters,
the Mann-Kendall rank statistic for trend and power
spectrum analysis.
From this analysis, the stationarity in time series of
precipitation amounts is stated. A generally decreasing, not
statisticaly significant trend is present over the entire time
interval (1862-1990). The annual and warm half-year
precipitation spectra can be fitted by Markov "red noise"
continuum and cold half-year precipitation series by that of
"white noise". Quasi-periodic oscillations appear in two
spectra ranges: short (2 - 6 years) and medium (16 - 43
years).

Summary: The development stages of perennial trees (apricot,
walnut,
common spruce and locust-tree) as well stages of honey bees wereanalysed
in Đurđevac and Bjelovar in the period before (1971-1980) and after
(1981-1990) the marsh gas station Molvewas putting in operation. It has
been shown that differencesbetween the considered periods do exist. Colder
winter in thesecond period caused late leafing and blooming of the common
spruce, apricot and walnut trees. Warmer springs provokedearlier
vegetation of the locust-trees and earlier stages of bees. However, the
variations established were not of localcharacter having been observed on
both locations at the sametime.

Summary: The estimated decade values of potential and real
evapotranspiration, using the Palmer method, for meteorological station
Zagreb-Maksimir have been analysed. Deviations of the 1961-1990 mean value,
mean decade values of air temperature and relative humidity have been
presented. The climatological data of air temperature, relative humidity
and precipitation amount have been used for the period from 1 September
1989 to 30 September 1990. It is shown that the mild winter had a
favourable influence on hibernation of winter plants. High air temperature
and long dry period had a negative influence hibernation plants in summer.

Summary: The main meteorological elements on the continental
part of
Croatia (at locations Zagreb-Maksimir, Slavonski Brod and Osijek)during
1991 were analysed. The mean sums of effectivetemperatures were calculated
for the vegetation period. It isshown that meteorological conditions were
favourable forhibernation of winter plants. However, adverse weather
conditions in the period April-June caused difficulty for springsowing.

Summary: The average water balance components for ten-day periods in
the continental part of Croatia were estimated by using the Palmer method.
For this purpose, climatological data of temperature, relative humidity and
precipitation in the period 1 September 1989 to 30 September 1990 were
used. The results show the insufficientey of soil water acount during the
whole considered period.

Summary: In this paper, the influence of theEarth surface warmingon
the islands of Cres and Lošinj is considered. A higher increase in annual
temperature could be expected (up to 5 degrees Celsius) at the end of the
21th century. A significant change in annual precipitation is not very
probable. However, a decrease in precipitation during summer and autumn,
and an increase during winter and spring has been established. A change in
other climatic elements can be expected.

Summary: This paper analyses the meteorological elements which
should
be taken into consideration in forest fire prevention. The forestfire on
the island of Hvar, which lasted intermittently from 13to 31. July 1990 has
been taken as an example to show that the breaking out and development of
fires greatly depend on theclimatic and weather factors of a
particular location. Comprehensive and efficient forest-fire
prevention is not possible without interdisciplinary research, of
whichmeteorology is only a segment. However, practice has shown thateven
existing knowledge meteorology and experience in this fieldare rarely
being adequately applied.

Summary: The decade values of potential evapotranspiration have
been calculated for Zagre-Maksimir and Osijek during the vegetation
period (April-September) 1992 according toEaglemans's relation. These
values have been used to estimatedthe decade values of water budget
components (realevapotranspiration, soil water reserve and soil water
loss)according to Palmer's method. Substantial soil water lossoccured in
the third decade of June and July. The big difference between the
potential end real evapotranspirationfor August and September indicates a
long, warm and dry periodin summer 1992. The soil water reserve was also
at its minimum in this period.

Summary: An analysis of the water budget components, thetemperature
sums and the basic meteorological elements showsthat the year under
observation was mostly dry. The drought wasespecially marked in January
and August. Large losses of waterfrom the soil occurred in the third
decade of Juny and July, while minimum values of soil water reserve were
observed during
August and September. The greatest deviations of temperature sumsfrom the
1981-1990 mean values were recorded during August. Thewet period included

Summary: The growth of plants is more or less closely correlated
with the accumulated air temperature below or above some temperature
threshold T. When computed from mean temperatures, these temperature
differences are called degree days or temperature sums. Different types of
degree days in the mountain area for the period 1961-1990. have been
analysed. The mean annual of growing degree days (T=5(C) reached
2000-2300(C at an altitude of 400-600 m. The range of the mean annual
coolingg degree days when CCD < 0(C was from -250 to -200(C at the same
altitude. For the Zavižan meteorological stations situated in the northern
part of the Velebit monutain at 1594 m, these degree days were 950(C and
-550(C respectively. The results of linear trend analysis are shown that
the anual degree days for the different threshold do not significant
increase for these mountain stations.

Summary: Relations betweenminimum air temperatures at 2m height and
soil temperatures at depth of 5cm at 7am do not differ significantly for
different weather types. However, they are pronounced between months.
According to these conclusions, soil temperatures should be predicted
particularly by means of regression equations deduced for each month.
Weather situations have been defined by means of average cloudiness and
wind conditions, as well as situations with fog and frozen ground during
the night preceding the occurence of minimum temperatures.

Summary: On the territory of Croatia there are a few
meteorological stations which have long series of
meteorological data. Their height above sea level is not
higher than 160 m. One of them is the Zagreb-Grič
observatory (g.w. = 45o49', g.l. = 15o59', H = 159 m a.s.l.)
lying at the foot of Mount Medvednica at the SE edge of
the Alps. The neighbouring station Sljeme-Puntijarka (g.w. =
45o55', g.l. = 15o58', H = 988 m a.s.l.) at the top of
mountain has an uninterrupted data series since 1946.
Besides the basic statistic and the trend analysis deduced
for the Zagreb-Grič 100-year series 1891-1990, the same
one was performed for the common 45-year period of
measurement (1946-1990) at both stations.

Summary: The development of stages of forest trees (sallow, common
spruce and beech tree) and field flowers (colts-foot, saffron, dandelion
and autumn crocus) were analysed on Zavižan in the period 1964-1990.
The Zavižan Region is located on theVelebit mountain, about 130 km SW
of Zagreb, at 1.5 km altitude. Temperature and precipitation
fluctuations cause a large variation in commencement and duration of
individual
phenological stages. Therefore, from year to yeardifference in
commencement of some growth stages could reacheven 3 weeks. A comparative
analysis of the phenological data ofconsidered plants and meteorological
data show that not onlyimportant accumulated heat in the vegetation period
but also athermal regime in the colder seasons.

Summary: Maximum daily precipitation amounts (MDPA)
observed in the northwestern part of the Dinaric Alps of
Croatia during the last 43-year period are studied for
periodicity applying autocorrelation analysis and the Fast
Fourier Transform. The subregions show the following
variations: highland (H) 3.5-, 7.0- and 2.1-year period,
coast slopes (C) 14.0- and 21.0-year period, and inland (I)
4.7-, 7.0- and 14.0-year period. The whole of the region
appears to have two main components with periods about
7 and 14 years, which are the most pronounced in the
subregion spectra.

Summary: ABSTRACT: Time series of degree days for the different
temperature thresholds from stations in the Croatia lowlands have been
analysed. The temperature differences, between mean temperatures and
temperatures thresholds, are called degree days or temperature sums.
Different types of degree days, coolling and heating ones, for the period
1961-1990 have been calculated. The range of the mean annual cooling degree
days (CDD<0(C) was from -170(C to -150(C and for the heating (HDD(0(C) was
from 3950(C to 4200(C. The results of linear trend analysis and the
Mann-Kendall test are shown that the annual degree days of the lowland
stations do not significant increase or degrease chronologically.

Summary: The outline of the work defines the fruit types which could
produce the beneficial growth on the mid-Dalmatian islands. We recommend
the growth of previously existing fruits, today although neglected and
almost completely forgotten. Also we recommend the new southern and
subtropical fruit-types. However, it is necesary to accomplish some
predispositions. That is the reason to analyse the agrometeorological facts
based on hydrological balance. The main limiting factor is water. To that
purpose we made the analysis of mean values of precipitation amount as well
as potential and real evapotranspiration of meteorological stations on
Dalmatian islands from 1981-1990. By analysing the obtained data we
perceived the concrete feasible solutions.

Summary: Research within the project " An agrometeorological
Programme for Croatia", as part of the project "Climatic Programme for
Croatia in the period 1991-2000, is of great importance. The most important
investigations concern water management in agriculture. The first results
for the mid-Dalmatian islands were published in the proceedings of the
conference "Strategy of Development for the Croatian Islands" held in Hvar
in May 1994. Further research was carried out on meteorological data for
the Croatia lowlands and these results are presented in this paper. The
mean decade values of the precipitation amount, potential and real
evapotranspiration for the thirty meteorological stations in the period
1981-1990 have been analysed. Preliminary results of water budget present a
significant difference for in the water budget of particular regions.
Regions of the most adverse water budget conditions indicate a climatic
change tendency. Water deficiency on these locations, especially in
agriculture, which has brought about a clearly rational approach to water
management.

Summary: The subject of global warming has initiated an
investigation of time changes ofmean extreme temperatures for Croatian
lowland which has great agricultural importance. Thefluctuations and trends
of seasonal and annual anomalies of mean maximum and minimum temperature
and diurnal temperature range relative to the mean 1961-1990have been
determined. Short-term changes of areal and high elevated location data
during the last 42 years (1951-1992) havebeen compared with the short- and
long-term changes (1901-1992) at thetwo stations situated on the eastern

Summary: Seasonal and annual mean temperature, mean maximum and
minimum temperature as well as diurnal temperature range for nine selected
regions in central Europe (Germany, Poland, Switzerland - midland, Czech
Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Slovak Republic,Hungary and Croatia - lowland)
in 1951-1990 were compiled by the area-weighted averaging for each region
in the form of deviations from the mean of the period 1961-1990. The data
series were analisedby the method of linear trend with t-test of
significance, by the method of change point and by the method of kernel
smoothing.
The increase in annual TMAX in central Europe during the 1951-1990 period
was slightly lower than that of TMIN (0.52 deg C and 0.60 deg C,
respectively). The resulting decrease in DTR by -0.08 deg Cwas smaller than
the value of the warming (increase in MT by 0.40 deg C). With the exception
of spring TMIN, corresponding changes in other seasonal characteristics are
non-significant

Summary: Harmonic analysis has been employed to investigate the
seasonal
cycle in thermal regime at five locations over the mountain
Biokovo region: Makarska, Opuzen, Šestanovac, Imotski and Vrgo-
rac. The monthly averages of temperature as well as monthly means of
minimum and maximum temperatures from 1961-1980 have been
subjected to analysis. The weakest intensity of periodical vari-
ations is characteristic for the locations under the stongest
sea influence. Over the whole area the first harmonics' compo-
nents dominates and their phasess differ very slightly in all
temperatures considered. On the contrary, the spatial diffe-
rences between the other harmonics phases are much more significant -
particularly in mean maximum temperatures.

1990. For temperature, there exists an increase of 0.34oC
per 100 years in mean annual values. This warming is
mostly expressed during the autumn (0.70oC per 100
years) as well as during the winter (0.63oC per 100 years),
and slighter during the summer (0.25oC per 100 years),
while spring shows a decrese of 0.21oC per 100 years.
After the 5-year moving average curves, the annual
temperature indicates its temperate increase mainly untill
the begining of the 1950', when the warmest years in
secular series are observed. During the 1951' a decrease
in temperature is present. From the beginning 1980' the
mean annual temperature increase again. For precipitation,
there is a decrease in the annual as well as in the
seasonal series. The main contribution to the decrease of
the annual precipitation gives the decrease in summer and
autumn amounts. In total it is 1.61 mm per year, of which
0.13 mm during the winter, 0.30 mm during the spring,
0.46 mm during the summer, and 0.68 mm during the
autumn. At the annual level it means 0.13% in relation to
the long-term mean, in summer 0.19%, in autumn 0.15%, in
spring 0.11% and in winter only 0.04%. The Kvarner Bay
has experienced the greater annual precipitations untill the
beginning of the 1940' than during the last 50 years.
However, all temperature and precipitation trends are not
statistically significant after the Mann-Kendall rank test.

Summary: The trend analysis of annual and seasonal mean extreme
temperatures, diurnal temperature range and cloudiness has been deduced for
the last 43 years (1951-1993) for two high-lying stations: Zavižan (1954
ma.s.l.) and Puntijarka (988 m a.s.l.), and compared with the results for
nearby low-lying stations Zagreb-Grič (157 m a.s.l.) and Crikvenica (2 m
a.s.l.). An increase in mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures has been
observed for annual as well as seasonal values, except for autumn, in both
mountainous and low-lying stations. Faster increase in annual maximum than
in minimum resulted in an increase of annual diurnal temperature range at
the mountain stations and coastal one. At the same time mean annual and
seasonal cloudiness show a decrease, faster for mountain stations than for
low-lying ones.
