    Number of references: 22
    Language: engleski
Summary: The solubility of alkaline earth laurates was studied inaqueous solutions as function of temperature. Dissolutionenthalpies, determined directly by calorimetry, were comparedwith the solubility data. The enthalpy change showed lineardependance on temperature. The heat capacity change, calculatedfrom dissolution enthalpy versus T plot, was found to be 1,1kJ/molK for all salts. The entropy change of dissolution, as obtained fromsolubility and calorimetry, showed linear dependance on lnT; theheat capacity change calculated from these plots, was the same asobtained from temperature dependence of the enthalpy. Specific behaviour of each alkaline earth cation ischaracterized by the entropy change, which is the lowest forcalcium salt, thus explaining the irregular low solubility ofcalcium carboxilates. The so called compensation effect wasexplained in terms of the "critical compensation temperature",which was found to be just an average temperature within theexamined temperature region.

Title: A Dynamic Approach to the Formation of Lamellar Liquid Crystal Aggregates

    Authors:
    Težak, Đurđica (49440)

    Number of references: 16
    Language: engleski
Summary: The unusual kinetics of aggregation of amphiphilic micellesin aqueous solutions was demonstrated using light scattering, microscopic and X-ray diffraction data. Dynamics of the formation of the lamellar mesophases isexplained as a consecutive process caused by short rangeinteractions of growth and curvation of the bilayers, and by longrange aggregation interactions. These driving forces cause themaximum aggregation rate to occur during the periods ofnon-equilibrium states, as well as the zero aggregation rate inthe period of steady states.

Summary: Using fractal analysis the mass distribution and concepts offractality or multifractality were explained in the followingsystems: (i) the liquid crystal formation (lamellar) inalkylbenzenesulfonate - water and/or added electrolyte solutions;(ii) the growth of the AgI crystal nuclei and colloidalaggregation in the aqueous medium with or without addedelectrolyte, or non-ionic surface agents, or organic dyes. It hasbeen shown that the kinetics of precipitation process can beexplained in terms of discontinious processes of growth andseveral steps of aggergation. By such an approach the phenomenaof colloidal stability including complex formation, nucleation, growth of primary particles, flocculation, coagulation, could becharacterized as temporal and spacially controlled.

    Journal: Submitted to Liquid Crystals
    ISSN: 0267-8292
    Pages: from 0 to 0
    Number of references: 20
Summary: The phenomena of growth and aggregation of the systemscontaining aqueous solution of elctrolytes (uni-, bi- andtrivalent metal nitrates) and single- or double-chainalkylbenzenesulfonates (C8 - C15) were invenstigated bypolarization and transmission electron microscopy. Amphiphilic molecules of above mentioned type provide highability to a self-organization, i.e. to form micellar and liquidcrystalline forms. Using X-ray diffraction, light scattering (SLSand QELS), polarization and transmission electron microscopy, amodel of self-organization from a micro- to macro- level wasproposed in terms of several aggregation stages. By increasingthe amphiphile concentration in an aqueous solution, theformation of dimers, discotic micelles (nematic phase), tubularcylinders (myelinic forms), primary lamellar micelles, focalcones and finally secondary aggregates including focal conicstructures, were found. According to the light scatteringinvestigation (the determination of slopes in the "intensityversus scattering vector" diagram), the formation of lamellarliquid crystalline phases was found to be characterized bymultifractality.

Title: Theories of Colloid Chemistry Based on the Point Charge Double Layer Model

    Authors:
    Mirnik, Mirko (31932)
Journal: Submitted to Croatica Chemica Acta
Summary: On the basis of experimental and theoretical considerations, coagulation is proved to be a process of second order by which small aggregates of up to six singlets are formed. It is graphically demonstrated that the theoretical functions match the experimental ones in an impressive way. The shortcomings of the classical Smoluchowski's (1916) theory are described and proofs are given that the same theory is not a theory of second order reactions, as it should be, and that it cannot be used for explaining of coagulation of big aggregates. By electron micrographs and by a scheme, it is demonstrated that coagulation in the AgI colloid system consist of threeconsecutive processes. First, a stable sol containing stable particles is produced by mixing ŠNaIĆ and ŠAgNO3Ć solutions in appropriate concentrations. After addition of a coagulator to the stable sol, small stable AgI particles in Brownian motion collide and coalesce and primary particles or singlets are formed. The singlets coagulate and form aggregates consisting of increasing number of singlets. The space between the singlets in aggregates is filled with intermicellar liquid. The experimental time evolution of the intensity of scattered light is the sum of the decreasing intensity of stable particles function and the increasing intensity of the aggregate funktion. The square root of the intensity of light scattered, or absorbed, on stable particles or aggregates is proportional to the size of the stable particles or to the number of singlets in the aggregates. Four methods for determination of the half- period of coagulation from scattered light intensities are described.

Summary: The collection of definitions, the terminology and theappropriate symbols in the colloid and surface chemistry has beenpublished in the Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 1972 asan outcome of extensive work and discussion within the Comissionof the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, IUPAC.The main concern was in still is that, since colloid and surfacechemistry are subdivisions of physical chemistry, and there issubstantial overlap between these fields an others, in particularwith electrochemistry and with polymer chemistry, it wasimportant that terms in colloid and surface chemistry should bethroughout consistent and not different from that common tophysical chemistry. Recalling that the term is a word or expression having aprecisely limited meaning or peculiar to a science, art orprofession, as for instance a scientific or a technical term, theIUPAC commission as a collective author of this book ofrecommendations on surfactants and their physical chemistry andtechnology tried and appears to be fortunate in reconcilling somedichotomies arousing by considering basically the same issues butonce from the scientific point of view and, second from theindustrial, engineering or technology point og view.

Summary: Interactions between metal ions and comercial detergentdodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (HDBS) in water and sea-water ofdifferent salinities were examined using "precipitation method".The precipitation regions, the "solubility product" regions andthe micellar solubility regions were recognized. Under suchconditions the sedimentation occurs in sea-water by the additionof very low concentration of detergent (under 1E-5 molar) in thepresence of very low concentrarion of metal ions (under 1E-7molar). The cummulative interaction of surfactant and electrolyteadded to sea-water leads to a synergistic precipitation effect.
