Summary: Several types of electrodeposited ruthenium electrodes on a platinum substrate have been studied. The first type was prepared by a galvanostatic deposition using 40 mA cm-2 current density and varying deposition time from 1 to 60 min. The electrode has been electrochemically activated to a second type by square wave pulses between -0.2 and 0.85 V vs. SCE. The complete reduction of the oxide is a necessary condition for the activation process.

Summary: Results of impedance analysis of Fe80B20 glassy alloy in sulphuric acid in three distinct anodic potential ranges are presented. Dominant electrode processes are found to be: (i) kinetically controlled charge transfer mediated by adsorption of some intermediate species in the active dissolution range, (ii) the same process, but with a blocking effect due to adsorption of the passivating species in the passivation range, and (iii) ion migration within a passive layer in the passive region.

Summary: The anodic behaviuor of galvanically plated ruthenium-iridiumcoating on titanium was investigated. The presence of 40% of iridium in the coating yielded 300 times higher stability in comparison with the coating of pure ruthenium. In addition, a square-wave pulsing between -0.25 and 1.25 V vs the saturated calomel electrode produced an oxide film with electrochromic properties which were directly related to the charge enhancement factor of the grown oxide.

Summary: Hydrous oxide growth on rhodium electrodeposited on titanium was investigated with respect to electrocatalytic activity and stability of the coating in the oxygen evolution reaction from 1 mol dm-3 NaOH solution. An enhancement of the charge storage capacity by a factor of four was achieved by square-wave pulsing between -1.05 and 0.45 V vs. SCE. The grown oxide exhibited a rate of oxygen evolution enhanced by about one order of magnitude accompanied by a decrease of the Tafel slope.

Summary: The electrocatalytic activity and anodic stability of electrodeposited ruthenium, iridium and rhodium coatings on titanium in oxygen evolution reaction from 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid have been investigated. Ruthenium exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity evidenced by the lowest Tafel slope of 30 mV/decade and the highest current density. The anodic galvanostatic polarization proved rhodium to be the most stable coating.

Summary: Landau and Lifehitz have deduced a fugacity of 1017 bar that would lead to states in which the capturing of electrons by nuclei whith emission of neutrinos is thermodinamically favored. Pressure and corresponding fugacities are calculated and compared to the above quoted value. The relation of fugacity to the mechanism of deuterium evolution on the surface of the metal, pressure and cracking when pressure in voids exceeds the spreading pressure of the metal is discussed.

Summary: A Pd electrode has been examined which produced a concentration of tritium in 0.1 M LiOD solution around 103 times above background. Tritium production at a given potential ceased after a few days, but could be restored by a small increase of the deuterium overpotential. Correspondingly, He+ was found in 9-10 pieces of the Pd electrode at 2-100 times background. The surface of the electrode contained a Cu-mosaic structure, not seen on the inactive electrode.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy were used for the characterization of an electrodeposited ruthenium electrode (unactivated) and an electrode subjected to electrochemical activation. It was found that both electrodes consist of a mixture of ruthenium oxides, hydroxides and adsorbed water molecules. The most prominent difference between the samples is a significantly higher hydroxyl content in the case of the activated electrode.

Summary: Anodic films formed by passivation of Fe80B20 were studied using impedance spectroscopy. An insulator or n-type semiconductor barrier layer impedance determines the total impedance if the films are formed in the borate-buffer. Those films exhibit a perfect protective behaviour against corrosion. In the acid sulphate solution, lower protective passive films are formed, with the total impedance determined by a bilayer structured passive film.

Summary: The complex oxide of composition Pb1+xZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (x=0.025 or -0.01) was produced by the solid state reaction of the composite oxide PbO, ZrO2 and TiO2 at 900oC. The synthesized sample was at least two phase tetragonal. Free PbO was found in the lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) sample when an excess of lead oxide was added to the reaction mixture. Zirconium and titanium oxides exhibited isoelectric points in sodium chloride and ammonium acetate at pH 7.0 for ZrO2 and pH 3.5 for TiO2.

Summary: Tritium production was measured in the liquid and gas phases on Pd codeposited with deuterium from PdCl2 + LiCl + D2O solutions. During two weeks of electrolysis in four out of six cells, average excess tritium levels pf 1.9 times in the gas phase and 1.6 times in the liquid phase were found over those expected from the separation factor. The largest excess of tritium found was three times that calculated theorethically from the separation factor.

Summary: The hydrous oxide film, with a charge enhancement factor of 19, exhibited two stages of oxide reduction. Coulometric data showed that the majority of the oxide (80-90%) was reduced in Ni(III)/Ni(II) transition almost reversibly while, depending on the potential of formation, about 10-20% of the NiOOH was irreversibly reduced. The hydrous oxide layer was stable over 14 days of electrolysis with an unchanged charge enhancement factor.

Summary: The heterogeneous electron transfer in (Fe(CN)6)4-/3/ and aquo complexes of Fe3+/2+ redox couples have been investigated on a ruthenized platinum electrode. Voltammetric data measured on a rotating disc electrode showed that a ruthenized platinum layer was a good electronic conductor. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant of 3.9x10-5 cm s-1 on the unactivated electrode increased by 30% in the case of the activated electrode.

Summary: The increase of charge storage capacity of the grown oxide for a factor of two was obtained. An about one order of magnitude enhanced rate of oxygen evolution accompanied by a decrease of the Tafel slope from 50 to 40 mV/decade was measured on the grown oxide. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy oxygen spectra have shown that the enhanced rate of oxygen evolution was in direct correlation with the increase of hydroxyl groups in the coating.

Summary: The anodic stability of an electrodeposited ruthenium electrode was measured by anodic galvanostatic polarization. The role of water in electrode stability was determined of thermogravimetric analysis. The loss of hydrous component of the oxide layer was in direct correlation with the increase of the anodic stability. This finding was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements.

Summary: Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 solid solutions were synthesized by solid state reaction of the constituent oxides. Microelectrophoresis was applied to analyze the isoelectric conditions of the individual oxide components and of the synthesized complex oxides. According to the similarity between the isoelectric points of ZrO2 and PZT, it seems that zirconium oxide has major influence on the electrokinetic charge and potential of the synthesized complex oxide(PZT).

Summary: The essential request in PZT synthesis are the purity of raw materials (PbO, ZrO2 and TiO2) and their surface reactivity. In aqueous electrolyte solutions (chloride, acetate, nitrate), due to relative solubility of lead(II) oxide (litharge) of 1.7 mg/L, various hydrolized and other complex species of Pb are present.By adsorption, they modify the surface charge, and consequently, the electrokinetic potential, depending on the concentration of the suspension, concentration of the electrolyte solution, and its pH.
