Summary: Measurements of tropospheric ozone for Zagreb, the capital ofCroatia, exist already from the end of last century. A comparisonof old ozone data (1893-1900) with five month ozone measurementsduring spring and summer 1975 shows an increase of volumenfractions from 36-67 ppb for day-time and 30 to 56 ppb fornight-time. In 1988 the station at the Ruđer Bošković Instituteand another station at the mountain Medvednica (stationPuntijarka, 980 m ASL) were included in 1989. to the EUROTRAC/TORnetwork. The two level experiments (sometimes three level, whenthe station Medvedgrad,480 m ASL was operative), especially incomparison with results from other stations of the TOR network, enable the analysis of ozone production, destruction andtransport and the search for events of stratospheric ozoneintrusions. An overview of the results and some specific examples(e.q. the ozone intrusion on Feb.6, 1990) will be presented.

The function used inthe intercorrelations were linear, quadratic, cubic, power lowand logarithmic relationships. The results obtained suggestedthat there are basically three subclasses of independenttopological indices in the benzenoids studied.

Benzene hydrogenation over unpoisoned nickelcatalyst was a structure-insensitive reaction. Its inhibition bythiophene produced structure sensitivity. Mixtures of NO2+O3 in synthetic air werephotolydsed at 662 nm. No evidence was found for the productionof N2O via this pathway, the upper limit for the quantum yield ofnitrous axide formation being N2O<0.6 %. However a darkconversion of NOx to N2O was observed and is attributedtentatively to a heterogeneous reaction on the wall of thereaction versel.

Summary: The result obtained by monitoring ozone in different region alongthe Adriatic coast and in Aegean region during summer and frommeasurements in Cairo, Egypt in March 1990 are reported andanalyzed. In general tropospheric ozone concentrations are higherin the northern than in the southern Adriatic region. Peaksvaluea in urban air of Athens frequently exceed the air qualitystandards, but high values have been meassured even on arelatively remote island Paros. The urban air in Cairo did notshow high ozone concentrations during March 1990 in spite of theheavy traffic and relatively interest sunshine.

Summary: 2,2-Bypirimidine (bpm) wheather as a free particle or a ligandcoupled on a cobalt(III) metal center reacts, in on aqueousmedia, with hexaaqueferum(II) only as a supstitution modus. Onthe country, when a stronger reducens like hexaaquochromium(II)is present, 2,2-bypiridine undergoes redox reactions in bothcases. We are going to describe the nature partial stechiometryand kinetic characterization of these proceses.

Summary: The rates of electron transfer from 1-hydroxy-1-methylethylradicals to a series of pentaamminecobalt(III)-imidazolecomplexes have been measured. A kinetics competition method basedon the homolytic scission of the chromium-carbon bond was used toevaluate rate constants for the reduction the cobalt(III) ions byradicals and direct measurements were carried out forthe reduction by hexaammineruthenium(II) ions. In both seriesthe rate constants show mild sensitivity to the substituent onthe imidazole ring. The rate of electron transfer between aseries of free imidazolium ions and 1-hydrox-1-metlylethylradicals were investigated. The rate constants for the freeimidazolium ions show also sensitivity to the substituent on theimidazole ring. A series of (imidazole)pentaaquachromium(III)complexes are reduced by 1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl radicals withrate constants that vary with substituent on the imidazole ring.A mechanism is proposed where by the initial electron transfertakes place at the coordinate imidazole, followed by a rapidintramolecular electron transfer to yield the products. Thereaction of the macrocyclic chromium(II) complex, with alkylhalides was investigated in aqueous and mixed H2O/tert-BuOHsolutions. The reaction are faster in pure water than in themixed solvent, supporting the idea of charge separation in thetransition state for halogen abstraction reaction.

Summary: Photoelectron (PE), 13C NMR and mass spectra of 5alfa-androstane,5alfa-androstane-3,16-dione, 5alfa-androstane-3,17-dione and thecorresponding 3-, 16- and 17-monoketones have been studied inorder to assess the sensitivity of long-range interaction(s) tothe position of substitution on the steroid ring system. Thedependence of long-range interactions between the carbonyl groupsof alicyclic system on ring conformation, on the basic ringstructure and on various combinations of positions of thesubstituents in A and D rings of steroidal system was studied byMO (MNDO, ab initio STO-3G and 3-21G+) calculations. Theelectronic structure of the steroidal ring system which functionsas a spacer between the substituent groups, is expected to bedetermining factor in substituent interactions as found in fastintra-molecular electron and enrgy transfer processes. Completelyoptimized MNDO calculations for all compounds as well as abinitio calculations for 5alfa-androstane using sTO-3G and 3-21G+bases indicate that the two highest occupied ribbon-like orbitalsof androstane, one aligned along the short axis (T-type) and theorder along the long axis (L-type), are responsible for theobserved differences between the 3,1- and 3,17- disubstitutionsin androstanediones and by analogy in steroids in general.
