Summary: Lack of dissolved oxygen in bottom layer is caused bysimultaneous effects of several factors: summer well definedstratification of water column, prolonged period of stableweather, increased primary production and diminished horizontalwater movement. Under anoxic conditions mass mortality ofsediment fauna occurs, while repeated hypoxia do not allow stableconditions to be re-established.

Summary: In past times, in straitened circumstances, the inhabitants ofKvarner islands have consumed marine organisms which usually arenot subject of fishing trade. Organisms were appreciated whichcan easily be collected without a use of sophisticated fishinggears. In the area surveyed we have noted 47 animal species (fishexcluded), one algal, and one seagrass species favourable forhuman consumption. Distribution patterns and abundancies of theseorganisms are discussed.

Summary: In the northern Adriatic Sea bivalve species were monitored from1977 to 1990. Samples were taken by dredges, grabs and SCUBAdivers. In some years phytoplankton blooms accompanied byappearances of mucilaginous aggregates caused drastic decrease ofoxygen content in the bottom layer. In late summer and/or inautumn mass mortality of various bottom species was noted. Thephenomenon, occured in 1977, 1988, and 1989. In this paper thesurvivals of bivalves are analysed and discussed.

Summary: In the Adriatic Sea fan shells Pinna nobilis and Atrina fragilis, and maybe Pinna rudis were noted.Pinna nobilis is the largest onemore then 1m, but usually 40-50cm in length. It is fished becauseof its big shells, and therefore became menaced. In pollutedcoastal zones where phanerogam beds declined, the fan shell alsodisappeared. Rare juveniles mature only in deeper zones. In 1976,the fan shell was proclaimed by law to be a protected species andits fishing was prohibited.

Summary: In the Bay of Plomin, the fouling on test plates has beeninvestigated. The inner shallow part of the Bay is influenced bythe impact of Boljunčica River resulting in a high sestonsedimentation. Organisms typical for polluted harbour waters werenoted. The dominant were Cryptosula pallasiana and barnacles. Inthe middle part of the Bay, mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis wasa dominant species reaching mean biomass of 19 kg/mý in only 2months.It seems that effluents of "Raša" coal mines and the steampower plant "Plomin" do not yet impact the fouling process.

Summary: From the 1965, fouling studies in the Adriatic Sea were focusedto environmental factors, substrata, temporal variations, andtoxic coatings qualitz. Macroorganisms were settled in allseasons, except in the winter time. Maximum fouling has beennoted on ozsters reared (54 kg/mý) and on fishery boats (28kg/mý) stationaried in slightly polluted harbours. At oilpolluted areas, the animal fouling was hindered. The data on thequality and dynamics of fouling communities enable assessments ofthe water quality important at construction of marinas,swiming-pools and various plants.

Summary: After a mass mortality of benthic organisms in the northernAdriatic Sea in 1989, the recovery of bivalves was studied atthree stations. Samplings were done by Van Veen grabs at almostone months intervals from December 1989 to November 1990. InDecember only adults of a few species were found. The bivalverecovery, in area affected by anoxia, was successful and rapid,as their reproduction season began already in the spring of 1990.Corbula gibba, Chione ovata and Musculus marmoratus showed a highrecruitment rate.
Keywords: Adriatic Sea, bivalves, oxygen deficiency, mortality, survived species, recruitment, Corbula gibba

Summary: Recently, a great demand and profitable marketing gave rise tothe date shell (Lithophaga lithophaga) fishing in uncontrolledquantities which leads to decline and even to total destructionof autochtone bottom communities due to damages of the rockysubstrate. To prevent the exploitation rate, a minimal fishingshell length was established by legislative documents, andshellfish exploitation by destructive fishing gears wereprohibited. The only effective protection would be a prohibitionof date shell marketing.

Summary: The seaweed Ulva rigida is a typical fouler on floating objectsthroughout the world. It is a nitrophilous and the principaleutrophication indicator species. Our data were collected over 20years with regard various environment conditions and substrata. The most favourable for Ulva are slightly polluted harbours, shellfish rearing parks rich in nutrients, rough oyster shells, and ship stern and propeller wings. Oil pollution and smoothsubstrata prevent the settling of Ulva.

Summary: Recovery of meio- and nematofauna communities influenced byanoxic stress in the Northern Adriatic in November 1989, weremonitored at three stations. The first signs of improvement, noted 7-8 months later were manifested in multiple increase ofmeiofauna densities decrease of the Ne/Co ratio and positivealterations on nematofauna level. Increased oscillations duringrepeated hipoxias suggested high sensitiveness of recoveryprocess.

Summary: The nematofauna community structure was studied at six offshorestations distinguished by various sediment types. The silty-sandstations were characterized by distinctly higher diversity, lessexpressive dominance and a twice higher number of species, incomparison to muddy stations. The similarity coefficient (QS)within one group of stations was markedly higher (59-73%) thanthose between various groups of stations (31-54%).

Summary: Changes in benthic communities at three offshore stations in theNorth Adriatic are described. We consider that significantstructural community changes, with a pronounced domination ofCorbula gibba, were consequenced by repeated seasonal lack ofdissolved oxygen at the bottom layer. Although no new massmortality has been noticed recently, the communities obviouslyare under constant pressure of environmental factord which do notallow re-establishment of stable conditions.

Summary: Mineral composition of Corallinacean algae collected in theAdriatic Sea have been examined by X-ray diffraction. All theanalyzed samples contained magnesium calcite. Aragonite wasdetected in most of the algae, and was dominant inPseudolithophyllum expansum (75-80 molar %). So a high molarfraction of aragonite has not been noted previously in anyCorallinacean species. The results show that calcareous algae candeposit a mixture of minerals, a fact which is not in accordancewith previous notes.

Summary: The Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb houses five recentmalacofauna collections. A widespread problem is damage to theshells in the form of a layer of thin crystals (Byne's disease). The damaged shells were analyzed by IR-spectrometry and X-raydiffraction. The results show the presence of calcium acetatehydrate (Ca(CH3COO)H20). It seems that the collections weredamaged by some kind of bacteria which, due to propitiousmicroclimatic conditions, can grow on the shell surface.
