Summary: Despite its primary natural and scientific dimension, conservationtillage cannot be regarded apart from the current social and economic trends in eastern Europe, which have a direct influence on the adoption and applicaton of technological innovations. Not contesting the basics of conservation tillage primariliy set by American and Canadian science and practice, it should be pointed out that the development of the system in Europe, and especially in eastern Europe, proceeded differently. This is a result of ecological differences as well as of the prevailing conceptions in soil science in Europe, mostly from the end of the 19th century and the first few decades of the 20th century. All this can probably explain the often contradictory attitudes toward the role of conservation tillage with respect to its introduction into general agricultural production. Here, practice may sometimes precede science. Despite scientifically proven advantages of conservation tillage, it is very difficult for this technology to be transferred into practice. Whether it is possible to form tillage management regions for the wider area of Europe with all of its ecological diversities, as has been done in the United States, remains to be established in terms of the results of scientific research and practical experience. If such classification proves to be justified, conservation tillage will certainly find its place.

Summary: The Karst area in the Dinaric Alps, has been chosen for the analysis of OPS and SAR imagery obtained by JERS-q, renamed "Fuyo 1" satelite. The main object was to evaluate te ability of JERS-1 imagery to detect and map various geological and geomorphologic features, rock discrimination and erosion in karst environment. The task also was to compare the data registered on JERS-1 images with existing geological maps, Landsat TM data and aerial-photogeological data. The image processing has been done and various images have been produced, including thestereopair of OPS images and the "Pseudo-stereo" of SAR images. On the interpreted images many geological and geomorphologic data, particularly karst features have been registered.

Summary: In the period of 16 years (1974-1989) trends of winter wheatyields and production on bjelovar regions has been analysed. Onprivate sector of ownerships the sown area and whole productionshows a continuously decreasing, but on social sector both sownarea and whole production show a continuously increasing. On bothsectors yields are in stagnation. The reasons are at firstwhether and soil condition. Without soil improvement on soils oflow fertility, however a stimulative economic policy it is notreal to expect a yield increasing.

Summary: The paper gives the specified-purpose assessment of land value on the island of Pag, from the standpoint of sheep farming. On the basis of pedological data, aerial photographs and satellite photographs from LANDSAT 5, the soils on the island have been classified from the fourth to the eighth category of the general land classification, with recommendation that the fourth and fifth category should not be used for any purpose other than primary agricultural production. This would preserve the strategic importance of agricultural areas and provide the preconditions for agriculture, in this case sheep-farming, to become and alternative to tourism as a source of good and rich living.

Summary: The paper presents the results of analysis of structure of the soil cover and the properties of some elementary soil (ESA) occurring in a great number of soil combinations (SC). The most frequent ESA in mountain Croatia are: calcomelanosol, calcocambisol, luvisol and rendzina. They appear in small areas, depending mostly on the kind of the bedrock, homogeneity of its wear, and on the relief. The basic factors of formation and distribution of SC are the karst processes, relief characteristics, alluvial-proluvial processes, rock heterogeneity, and human influence.

Summary: An experiment was conducted in 1990, 1991, and 1992 in Croatia to evaluate the effect of the bioregulators Agrispon and Ergostim on the vegetative and reproductive growth and development of the apple (Malus pumila L.) varieties Elstar and Golden Delicious. Agrispon in non-toxic plant and mineral extract containing zeatin, triacontanol, and other components. Ergostim is an L-cysteines and folic acid derivative. both products were applied twice, three weeks after flowering, and 10 to 15 days later the chlorophyll content of leaves increased throught the season, while carotenoids increased during the early growth stage. Leaf growth and petiole length were both affected for Golden Delicious apples, but only petiole length was affected for the cv. Elstar. Enhaanced phtosynthetic activity for both products produced a significant increase in apple yield and size for elstar in 1990, for Golden Delicious in 1991, and for Elstar in 1992. Only Agrispons significantly increased Golden Delicious yields in 1992. These bioregulators have been shown to help shown to help maximite returns from fertilizer and other off-farm investments, showing their place in sustainable agriculture systems.

Summary: Phase behaviour of cationic/anionic surfactant mixtures of the same chain length (n-10,12 or 14) strongly depends on the molar ratio and actual concentration of the surfactants. Precipitation of catanionic surfactant and mixed micelles formation are observed over the concentration range investigators. Coacervate and liquid crystals are fond to coexist in the transition region from crystaline catanionic surfactant to mixed micelles. The addition of oppositely charged surfactant diminishes the surface charge density and the mixed micelle/solution interface and enhances the apparent degree of counterion dissotiation from mixed micelles. Cationic surfacftants have a greater tendency to be incorporated in mixed micelles than anionic ones.

Summary: The first research of hydromorphic soils in Croatia, was done at the end of third decade of this century by professor Gračanin M. He explained in detail process of hydrogenization and pedogenesis of hydromorphic soils. The most consistent in application of his systematization and classification of hydromorphic soils was Kovačević P., et al., during the soil survey and soil classification of Gornja Posavina. At the same time started land reclamation and amelioration of Drava, Dunav, Sava, Mirna and Neretva watershed regions. To the end of ninth decade of this century 1.118.885 hectara were completely or incompletely hydromeliorated in Croatia, including subsurface drainage systems on 161.530 hectars of agricultural land. Partly the agroamelioration was done. In the proposed classification for hydromorphic soils in Croatia, division or order include lower units where classe in according to radical amelioration measure, type is based on physiographic properties and typical soil processes before hydroamelioration, then subtype is according to surface drainage with or without subsurface drainage-pipe drainage, variety in respect to agroamelioration, and finally soil form describe kind of agroamelioration measure or texture for nonameliorated soils.

Summary: The paper presents the results of investigating the topsoil contaminationwith heavy metals of the soils in the municipality of Glina in western Croatia. Regarding the average content, the soils are uncontaminated while the maximum values determined for Cd and Pb correspond to the state of increased contamination. The content of other heavy metals is far below the MTC. The degree of soil contamination by heavy metals presents no obstacle to growing high quality vegetables. Accordingly, the soils of this region are very suitable for ecological agriculture-the so called alternative agriculture. The following criteria is proposed for designation of the degree of soil contamination byheavy metals: uncontaminated soil, up to 25% MTC, contaminated soil, 25-50% MTC, highly contaminated soil, 51-100% MTC, polluted soil, 100-200% MTC, very polluted soil, over 200% MTC. We estimate that MTC should be defined so as to depend onthe soil properties that determine the mobility of heavy metals, primarily soil reaction and the total cation exchange capacity, as well as the humus content, quantity and kind of clay minerals and the content of amorphous hydroxides.

Use of liquid manure and higher doses of mineral fertilizers is not allowed. On the example of water protected area of Črnkovec, near Zagreb there is presented a approach of land use in agriculture in water protected area in third and second water protected zones, as well as in the first zone - on the place of pumping of draw water. There is a recommendation for wind break plants as a protection against of dry aerial deposition, but in so protected area a vegetable growing with a choice of crops which needs small amount of nitrogen and medicinal heerbs, tolerant on monocropping.

Summary: On the basis of the pedological data, evaluation of soils of the island of Hvar has been carried out in order to assess the suitability of soils for growing of olives, citrus fruits, vineygards, vegetables, as well as for pastures and some farm crops. The soils have beenclassified from 4th to 8th category. It is recommended that the 4th and 5th category be used exclusively for crop farming and that, for strategic reasons they should not be irrationally and indiscriminately used for purpose other than ploughland farming. The paper includes the land value map of the island of Hvar, showingthe distribution of various land value categories.

Summary: In the broader area of Makarska, the soil cover was investigated with the structure of soil combinations (SC) and elementary soil areas (ESA). The soil map of the area distinguished 23 mapping units mainly constituing complex soil combinations, except karst fields and the Neretva river delta, where simple or homogenous features are found. The soil combinations in the mapping units, from the aspect of soil cover theory, are given in Table 1. Kars-suffosion processes, relief features, alluvial-proluvial processes, heterogeneity of the bedrock, ground water and human influence are the basic factors of formation and distribution of SC. The most frequent soils in the area are: Calcocambisol, Calcomelanosol and Terra rossa onthe limestone-dolomite substratum series; coluvial, alluvial and Hydromorphic gley soil appearing as the result of translocation and displacement of substances by alluvial and proluvial processes; Regosol, Rendzina and eutric brown soil on flysch. Other soils are less frequent.

World agriculture is on the beginning of fourth or biological revolution. Croatia stopped with land amelioration, especially drainage, in spite of very high needs. That stoppage is not for tolerance, but it is necessary to respect negative impacts of pipe drainage on environment, registered in west European countries.

Summary: The results obtained indicate that crop rotation was a significant biological-cytological category affecting the tobacco leaf properties and that it was to be preferred over the monoproduction of tobacco. A crop rotation with a greater number of fields was to be preferred over crop rotation with a lesse number of fields. As regards tobacco quality, too, crop rotation was evidently to be preferred over crop rotation with a lesser number of fields. The chemical composition of the tobacco was less dependent on the number of crop rotation fields. The degree of virus infection of tobacco was the most dependen on whether the tobacco was grown in plot rotation or a monoculture. Again, crop rotation was to be preferred over monoproduction and crop rotation with a greater number of fields was to be preferred over crop rotation with a lesser number of fields.

Summary: Aimed at defining the optimal agrotechnology for maize grown of acid soils of central Croata, 4-year (1987-90) stationary investigations were carried out on acric luvisol in the Kordun region. Mineral nitrogen was applied in three rates (N140 N180 N220), mineral phosphorus as well (P120, P160 P200), while potassium fertilization was the same for all treatments. Firm cattle manure was applied in two rates (150 and 300 dt/ha), and so was liquid manure (15 and 30 m3/ha). Dolomite was used as liming material and wasalso applied in two rates (150 and 300 dt/ha). Investigation results point to the conclusion that modern agrotechnology for maize grown on acric luvisol of the Kordun region includes liming, as well as application of organic and mineral fertilizers.

Summary: Rational soil and water management and protection constitute the key problem of the present and future agricultural production in our country, as well as in the world. In this respect, the natural and economic characteristic of Croatia are quite specific, substantially differing from those of other former socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe with which Croatia is frequently being identified because of similar requirements of transition to the market economy and respecting the principles of the so-called sustainable development. The paper describes the existing experience on water protection in agricultural production, based on research carried out in the framework of the national and international projects, by which are leading or in which are engaged the author. The paper also gives a short presentation of scientific, professional, advisory and legislative problems dealt with in developed European countries, in order to inform our professional circles.

Summary: The paper analyses and discusses the input hydrological and hydropedological parameters accuracy degree, and the drought risk on the example of the Žestilje Project in Slavonia. The calculation and component analysis in the water balance according to the Cropwat model indicate which components have significant effect on irrigation calculation elements and what risk levels are acceptable. Particular attention is paid to the input precipitations analysis, as the basic hydrological quantity, whose effect of the calculation of the plant water requirements is crucial. The coefficient of variation, Cv, of the monthly precipitations varies between0.38 in June and 0.85 in September. For the precipitation occurence probability of 50-80%, an average increase in irrigation water requirements is 39-42%. The maximum total irrigation requirement of 338 mm is for vegetables, i.e. carrot and parsley. The gross water supply ratio varies between 81 and 443 mm. The Žestilje area in the vicinity of Našice is a good example for ruther analyses and verification of irrigation projects and schedules for the broader Slavonia region.

Masimum values of nitrates in water are 171 mg/l, and maximum concentrations of copper 0,38 mg/l, manganese 0.154 mg/l, zinc 2.85 mg/l, lead 0.26 mg/l, and cadmium 0.02 mg/l. In soils, maximum concentrations of total copper are 26.0 mg/kg, manganese 510 mg/kg, zinc 69 mg/kg, lead 11.2 mg/kg, and cadmium 0.65 mg/kg; the content of physiologically active (mobile) copper is 5.6 mg/kg, manganese 181 mg/kg, zinc 2.0 mg/kg and lead 7.0 mg/kg. Mobile cadmium is found only in traces. Of triazin pesticides, only atrazin <5-20 ng/g, and simazin <10-108 ng/g, have been detected in soil. In all watters, the highest concentrations are those of atrazin, 38.6 ...g/l, while prometrin has not been detected.

Summary: Agriculture and forestry, together with the sea and naturalbeauties of coastal regions and numerous islands present thegreatest wealth of the Republic of Croatia, which has to berationally used and preserved for the future generations. Theinherited state of agriculture in Croatia is characterized byhuge disproportions between the so-called social and privateproduction sector. the private farmers production was neglected, although the private farmers owned approximately 80% of thearable land and over 90% of livestock. Out of this reason, inmany regions there came to desertion of the estates, and themigration of the young population. Despite all of these failuresand problems, and the most recent war damages, the Croatian ruralarea has kept its vitality, customs, and maybe most important ofall, its working habits.

    Authors:
    Bašić, Ferdo (2432)
    Language: engleski
Summary: According of current trends in world agriculture and "proecological" orientation of Croatian economy in post-war period this paper presents a analyse of possibilities of sustainable agriculture in Croatia. there is a suggestion to accept a crop rotation for definition of temporal criteria, but a catchement area for definition of spatial criteria of sustainability of agriculture. One of precondition of affirmation of sustainable agriculture is a integration of animal and plant production, what is possible to reach in a family farm as the basic unit of agriculture. Agroecological sciences need to make up a agroecological analyse-regionalisation of agriculture for each of agricultural region-subregion to create and investigate alternatives of modern agricultural practices in agriculture. Clean soil and soil conservation is a important precondition of affirmation of sustainable agriculture in Croatia. Sustainable agriculture is defined as "High knowledge agriculture" instead of up to-date "High input agriculture".

Summary: Economic recovery and development in the post-war period, on cross of historical development seem promising for Croatia in the context of the concept of sustainable development - "pro-ecological" orientation. Natural-agroecological resoruces of Croatia are very suitable for very wide and different structure of agriculture. On relatively small area of Republic of Croatia interweave the influence of more climatic types of Europe. Under a very heterogenous geological, geolitological and phytocenological influence there are formed many soil types of very different physical, chemical andbiological properties - a real natural museum of European soil types. The heterogeneity of climate, relief and soil types opens very wide possibilities of crop selection - from arable and industrial crops to viticulture, Mediterranean and continental fruit growing. There are three mean agricultural region: Pannonian and Mountain in continental part, and Mediterranean region on Adria cost and islands. Within that regions there are nine subregions with some specific agroecological conditions. The primarily task of agriculture is the change and adaptation to actual changes and needs in a direction ensuring a sustainable and environmentally compatible use of renewable resources, especially soil and water - a kind of "alliance" of nature and farming practices. There are plans in Croatia to establish a special, internationally recognisable food assortment of guaranteed quality, to satisfy even the most demanding touristic clients: Standard (Cro-stand), Nostalgic (Cro-nost), Ecologically controlled (Cro-eco), Bio-dynamic (Cro-bio) and Baby (Cro-baby) food.

Summary: Integral soil conservation is the keyissue of the economic recovery and post-war development of Croatia. Croatia participated in the creation of the approach to organised and integral soil protection within the Alps, Alps-Adria and the Danube River regional associations of its geographical neighbourhood and of similar economic aspirations, which includes: Inventorying of soil condition, Soil monitoring and Soil information system. Classification of soil damages based on the degree (reversible, conditionally reversible, non-reversible or irreparable), kind (intensive agriculture, pollution, removal and overlapping, and change of land use), process and consequences of soil damage is the basis for soil inventorying and soil monitoring in Croatia. Though there is no uniform standardisation in Europe, there is tacit agreement that the following substances should be brought under soil monitoring: pesticides (chlorinated hydrocarbons, organic phosphates and carbamates), polychlorinated biphenyl), heavy metals and potentially toxic elements (Cd, Hg, Pb, Mo, As, Co, Ni, Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn, Ag, V, Al, Sb, Se and Sn), nitrates and nitrites.
