Summary: In the present study, we have examined the effect of methionine-enkephalin (MENK) on production of intreleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumour necrosis factor (TNF) by mouse peritoneal macrophages. None of the MENK concentrations examined altered IL-1 or TNF activity alone. However, peritoneal macrophages co-stimulated with lipopolisaccharide (LPS) and 10-10 M MENK potentiated IL-1 activity but decreased TNF activity. The fact that supernatant of macrophages incubated with LPS and MENK had increased phagocytosis suggest that MENK could act indirectly by up-regulation of cytokines.
Keywords: Tumour necrosis factor, Interleukin-1, Methionine-enkephalin, Phagocytosis

Pages: from 193 to 199
Number of references: 32

Summary: The influence of single and multiple injections of peptidoglycan monomer on some hepatic enzymes, lipid peroxide generation in serum and liver, sialic acid concentration in serum and spleen and hepatic lysosomal membrane permeability was investigated. It was obtained that the metabolic changes after peptidoglycan monomer treatment were time-limited and from the toxicological point of view, provoked transient effect, the results obtained may be of importance when using PGM in combined chemo-immunotherapy.
Keywords: Peptidoglycan monomer, Chemo-immunotherapy, Superoxide anion

Title: Effect of sialic acid on glycatio-induced fluorescence of albumin

Authors:
LIPOVAC, VASKRSENIJA
GAVELLA, MIRJANA

Journal: Acta Diabetol.
ISSN: 0940-5429
Volume: 31
Year: 1994
Pages: from 156 to 159
Number of references: 16
Language: engleski
Summary: The aims of this study were to determine whether in vitro nonenzymatic glycation of proteins by sialic acid induced the generation of fluorescence, and whether the presence of this keto sugar may affectthe generation of fluorescence induced by other sugars. The results indicates that sialic can be potentially used to limit the damage from adverse glycation-induced processes.

Title: Superoxide anion production and some sperm-specific enzyme activities in infertile men

Authors:
GAVELLA, MIRJANA
LIPOVAC, VASKRSENIJA
ŠVERKO, VIŠNJA
Journal: Andrologia
ISSN: 0304-4262
Volume: 27
Year: 1995
Pages: from 7 to 12
Number of references: 23
Language: engleski
Summary: The relationship between superoxide anion production and the activities of sperm specific NADH-diaphorase and isozyme LDH-C4 in normozoospermic and oligozoospermic human semen samples point to biochemical abnormalities which may affect the functional status of sperms. The determination of these parameters may provide useful data in male fertility of unknown etiology.
Keywords: spermatozoa, superoxide anion

Title: In vitro modulation of preleukemic AKR mouse macrophage function by bacterial immunomodulators

Authors:
BUREK, BLANKA (56221)
HRŠAK, IVO (16676)
Journal: Immunol. Lett.
ISSN: 0165-2478
Volume: 45
Year: 1995
Pages: from 185 to 188
Number of references: 21
Language: engleski
Summary: Spleen macrophages from 1- and 4-month-old preleukemic AKR mice were stimulated in vitro with the bacterial immunomodulators lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan monomer (PGM) and muramyl dipeptide (MDP), in order to study their migration ability and mitochondrial enzyme activity. Macrophages from 1-month-old AKR mice failed to demonstrated any changes after in vitro stimulation while in 4-month-old AKR mice all parameters improved significantly with all three immunomodulators.
Keywords: bacterial immunomodulator, macrophage function, preleukemic AKR mouse
