Summary: The precise dating of Cretaceous Tethyan carbonate platform sequences of the Mediterranean region is hindered by the general absence of reliable marker fossils, notably ammonites. The presence of a new species of Prionocyclus, P. varicostatus, associated with late Turonian planctonic foraminifera in a pelagic incursion on the island of Dugi Otok, is therefore of some significance. The present record, together with occurence of Prionocyclus in Tunisia, show the genus to have been locally common on the south side of the Tethyan seaway.

Title: On the origin of the Red and the Blue Lake near Imotski (Southern Croatia)

    Authors:
    Bahun, Stjepan (1532)
    Journal: Geološki vjesnik

    Volume: 44
    Year: 1991
    Pages: from 281 to 288
    Number of references: 9
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: In the Late Miocene, a rather large lake existed in the areaaround Imotski, with swallow-holes at its SW border. Subsequentneotectonic activity dissected the area, and differentialmovements of blocks caused the dessication of the lake and putthe former swallow-holes out of function. Later on, collapsprocesses off the margins plugged the swallow-holes which werethus transformed into very deep potholes (the Red Lake) and/orhuge dolines (the Blue Lake and some other large depressions).

Summary: It has been established that the breccias of the JelarFormation in the regions of Drniš (Dalmatia) and Dabrica(Hercegovina) have been formed in the Middle Eocene. By analysesof limestone nannofossils it could be proved that the youngerpart of the Promina Beds in the locus typicus belongs to theLower Oligocene while the older part in Dabrica corresponds tothe younger part of Middle Eocene. The Jelar Beds are aconstituent of very complicated tectonic structures formed beforethe deposition of Promina Beds.

Summary: The examination of the S. Brusina's collection and samples fromSinjsko Polje revealed yet partially undetermined freshwaterMiocene gastropods as well as marine fossils such as gastropods(Caecum, Parastrophia etc.), foraminiferas, echinoid shelland spike fragments, parts of bryozoa and marine ostracods. Theremains of this marine fauna as well as specific identificationof foraminiferas suggest the Middle to Upper Pleistocene age ofthe Brusina samples. These data would further indicate thepossible existence of surface sea connection during thePleisocene between Sinjsko Polje and the Adriatic Sea.

    Language: engleski
Summary: Since the late Cretaceous emersion, sedimentation on the Adriatic platform started diachronously above a basement of different ages. The age of transgression ranges from Paleocene to Eocene. Several Paleogene environments and facies are recognized, ranging from brackish lagoons characterized by laminites of the Kozina Fm., to open shelf where Foraminiferal Lms. have been deposited. Recognized emersions had different durations, and all contribute to stratigraphic incompleteness of the sections studied. They have governed a diversification of facies, and are attributed to local block tectonics and falls in sea-level.

Summary: The Upper Jurassic carbonate facies succession at Breze indicates expressive facies differentiation on that part of the Adriatic carbonate platform. Intraplatform trough, formed by synsedimentary tectonics at the end of the Lower Malm, was depositional space of deeper-water platform carbonates. The regime of shallow-water sedimentation was re-established when the trough was gradually filled up by mechanisms of the gravity flows during Upper Malm.

    Language: engleski
Summary: Fault-strikes confining Paleozoic inlayers surrounded by Mesozoic rocks show that their relation is not a consequence of folding but of neotectonic uplifts causing a rather uneven relief of Paleozoic units under the carbonate Mesozoic. Predominance of tectonic contacts indicates that similar relations exist even between the Triassic and the confined Jurassic outcrops exhibiting inverse and, consequently, allochthonous relations. The allochthony is confirmed also by karst relief within some Triassic dolomites related to the unexpected ground water flow between the swallow holes and karst springs.

    Year: 1993
    Pages: from 127 to 137
    Number of references: 9
    Language: engleski
Summary: The joints named grykes are karst forms filled with detritic, soil material outwashed from overlying deposits. They were developed by dissolution as a result of the karstification process through several phases. Subsequently joints are brought from the freatic zone into vadose zone due to changes in the subsurface water regime and circulation of fluids. During this process they change their shape due the influence of tectonics and penetrate downward into underlying limestones. Thus they are subsequently widened by dissolution and in the final phase filled up either with products of surface erosion or by roof collapse.

Summary: Carbonate platform in SW Slovenia was a paleogeographically homogeneous territory until the Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian, while later it was environmentally differentiated. The uninterrupted stratigraphic succession exists only on Mount Nanos, while in other areas sedimentation was interrupted by emersion phases. Eustatic sea-level rise during Late Cenomanian -Early Turonian caused temporary drowning of the entire platform. The drowning event lasted shorter in the SE part, which is explained by tectonic upthrow. Where the platform was not already exposed, shallow-water sedimentation was interrupted again in the Late Santonian-Early Campanian.

Summary: During the Early Jurassic, the Adriatic carbonate platform was established as an isolated intra-oceanic platform. The carbonate platform sedimentation continued into the Late Mesozoic or Early Paleogene.Since the deposition took place mostly in very shallow water, even minor see level changes could significantly influence the patterns of platform sedimentation. Over most of the platform, two drowning events or pelagic episodes have been distingushed: (1) Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian and (2) Late Santonian-Early Campanian drowning event.

Summary: In the environ of Mrkopalj (Gorski Kotar region) Triassic and Jurassic sediments occur. The existence of different tectonic units have caused that the Upper Jurassic sediments show a great variety of facies types. These sediments were predominantly deposited on platform, while some deposites have strong pelagic influence. The underlying shallow-water deposits of the Adriaticum have been uplifted through the pelagic deposits of the Epiadriaticum, and they both were overthrusted by platform deposits of the Dinaricum.

Summary: The stratigraphic analysis of the geological columns on the Adriatic carbonate platform established the existence of the Santonian emersion in the area of the central and northern Adriatic. That situation in the southern Adriatic is characterised by a sedimentation ranging from the Santonian to the Paleocene. The stratigraphical columns with the Santonian emersion were selected from the several localities of the central and northern Adriatic. Their correlation gave a coherent picture of paleogeography, dynamics and consequences of that event.

Summary: The underlying deposits of the bauxite pits consist of micritic limestones of Cenomanian age. Local structure cross-sections, in the environs of the bauxite pits, showing an interesting relations in structural complex. Bauxite material is overlain by heavily disjected limestones and/or carbonate breccias with clasts of Paleogene age. These breccias are overlain by carbonate breccias with clasts of Cenomanian age. These two different breccia levels are devided by sharp disconformity. Analyses have led to tectonically controlled origin of these breccias.

Summary: On the end of the Mesozoic, Corsica, Sardinia and some Paleozoic rock domains of Calabria were presumably one structural block juxtaposed eastward to the Tunisia. From the Upper Cretaceous to the Eocene, this block has begun to separate with nortward move. Sicily, Apulia, and Istra have been moved toward NW respectively to Africa. Contemporary movements in the Eastern Mediterranean had the same NW trend. After the Lower Eocene, Sicily had NE trend, while Corsica, Sardinia and Calabria still had NNE trend. During The Late Oligocene-Early Miocena, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Istra have started to move toward WNW, while Calabria still moves to NE.

Summary: Studying area are characterized by shallow marine carbonate sedimentation during Late Cretaceous. The break in carbonate sedimentation occured after Lower Turonian. Researches on the four different islands (Cres, Krk, Rab, Pag) show that underlying rocks of the bauxite layers on the islands Cres, Krk and Rab are Middle and Upper Cenomanian and Lower Turonian in age, and Coniacian-Lower Santonian in age on the Island of Pag (locality Kustići). Bauxite pits are related with faults and faulting. Present situation suggests us genetic link between bauxite pits and faulting.

Summary: In the area of the north Dalmatian islands of Ist, Olib andSilba, lithostratigraphic analysis has shown the existence ofUpper Cenomanian and Middle Turonian to Lower Santonian beds. Atthe top of hte Cenomanian shallow water sediments, limestoneswith calcispherulids and pithonellas were found, which are firstimpulses of global Cenomanian-Turonian transgression. In theMiddle Turonian, investigated part of the Adriatic carbonateplatform was differentiated into shallow water and deeper waterfacies of the carbonate ramp.
