Summary: The research, that has been done both on "intact" terrain and opened cuts, basic caves of the objects, as well as in the tunnels, has verified the engineering geological and basic tectonic characteristics of Senonian limestones, Eocene flysh, the "Promina" breccias and breccia- konglomerates, as well as Oligocene poorly sorted breccias, on the route of simi-highway Solin- Klis (Dalmatia, Croatia). The lab analysis opf the great nuber of rock samples, have brought out the parameters for their basic physical and mechanical features within a particular engineering geological unit. The results, thus obtained, have been compared to the qualities of the rock structure block as a whole, and had been peviously evaluated by applying "RMR"-classification of the tžrocks and the results of measured velocities of the longitudinal seismic waves. It has been poited out that similar procedure may be applied in the elaboration of General Engineering Geological Map of Republic of Croatia.

Summary: The complex engineering geological and geophysical investigation, in the nearest surroundig of the conditionally stable slope, close to ore processing facilities in the dolomite quarry "Očura" near Lepoglava (North Croatia) was carried out. Physical and mechanical properties of the dolomite rock mass, considering longitudinal and transversal seismic wave velocities, and "RMR"- classification, was assesed. All the results indicate, that the slope above the pre processing facilities should be consider as conditionally stable, with real probability to get unstable under the vibrations caused by blasting, during the exploitation in the field, close behind the investigated slope.

Summary: There have been many resons which have demanded the making of these instructions. The IAEG and ISRM suggestions were used in the making. We tried to adjust concepts and names from the field of engineering geology to the terminology of the related fields. By the assesments of propreties and rating we wanted to define the quality of rock mass on a small-scale map. By the introduction of fundamental engineering geology description by means of BEGD-form (Basic engineering geological description), we intended to simplify the descriptions and make them concrete, and also to connect the data that could be found in them with the documentation.

Summary: The area of southwestern part of the city of Rijeka and that of immediate city surroundings are made of Mesozoic limestones. They are in places covered by sediments of younger Quaternary formations composed of coarse-grained clastic sediments-breccias, red soil and occasional karst fragments resulting from the decay of the very surfacxe of carstified relief. During the construction of the city and suburban settlements with accompanying infrastructure as well as during construction excavations and drilling of geomechanical boreholes, narrow or more specious underground cavities were found in scores of cases. In places, vertical passages prolonged into horizontal channels of various sizes and lengths. All accessible underground dilatations have been spotted and recorded in documents by means of spelaeologic inspection and testing and most pragmatic works for their remedy proposed. This paper presents some most characterictic examples of such foreseen and unforeseen findings.

Summary: A 14 km long tunnel through Ćićarija is the capital facility of the railway connection between Istria and other parts of Croatia. It is a part of optional solutions in which the future Adriatic Railways could fit in. Such facility has always represented a challenge to geologists, even more so if we have in mind complex geological structure of the Ćićarija region. Engineering-geological investigations are a part of overall programmed investigation works. However, they are crucial for the elaboration of geological forecasting profile and engineering-geological model which represent fundamental basis of geotechnical design. Geological and engineering-geological mapping of the tunnel route has been performed, as well as structural and geological, geophysical and geotechnical explorations, exploratory drilling and appropriate laboratory tests. Rocky mass has been classified pursuant to "RMR" and "Q" classification. This paper describes the methodology of model elaboration. The model could be applied on numerous planned railway, road and other tunnels, first of all in Croatia but also worldwide.

Summary: Modeling in engineering geology represents a very important foundation for geotechnical projects. It is based on very detailed and various field observations and measurements, less number of laboratory analysis, complex geophysical investigations as well as statistic data processing. Creation of engineering geological model assume common geological, geophysical and engineering geological researching, next to specific investigations such as: stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonics and genesis of discontinuities, their classification, under methods in rock mechanics. Laboratory tests involves analysis of intact rock. The basics in processing the field and laboratory investigations data's is their synthesis. Synthesis of the data's has to suppose diverse tectonic blocks, stratigraphic and lithofacies characteristics of rocks leading to classification of rock masses recommended by ISRM. Categorization of rock masses is performed inside particular tectonic blocks and in general. If the results of investigations are synthesized on this way it is liable to form an engineering geological model, which contains all data's needed for geotechnical projects, for particular construction.

Summary: The significance of engineering-geological and geotechnical works was proven on the example of design and selection of dam type at HPP Lešće and HPP Lučica. The importance of computer- aided program support is being emphasised, since it enables statistical processing of numerous recorded structural and tectonic elements. Integral engineering and geological model has been derived according to the above elements recorded on the terrain surface, in exploratory galleries and boreholes, and on the basis of geophysical investigations, “in site” and laboratory tests. Engineering classification of singled out rocky blocks has been carried out and geotechnical model elaborated with selected geotechnical parameters required for appropriate dam calculations. The synthesis and analysis of previously performed explorations for HPP Lešće was carried out by the application of engineering-geological and geotechnical modelling on the basis of singled out tectonic blocks and according to “Q” and “RMR” classification. In this way, the asymmetry coefficient of the dam profile on left and right river bank has been determined (1:1.3 to 1:1.8). It significantly deviates from the previously defined one, so that the solutions differ as regards technical and economic point of view, i.e. instead of gravitational concrete dam - the arch dam.

Summary: Unstable slopes and landslides represent a permanent technical and economical problem for the town of Zagreb. Although a great number of landslides has been repaired and in spite of the zoning of a particular part of the town after the categories of ground stability, including the appurtenant landslide register, from the 80-ies a stagnation in the systematic recording of the instability may be noticed. In the paper a review and analysis of the works so far in the field of investigation, remedy and recording of the landslides and the unstable slopes in the area of the town of Zagreb are represented. A new method of landslide recording i.e. establishing of a register of the landslides and unstable slopes as an up-to date computer data base is suggested. Thus a complete and up-to-date review of the landslides would be provided which would contribute to a better co-ordination within the activities on the solution of such municipal problems. Also some guidelines for the future work on the landslide and/or unstable slope inventories are presented. Key words: landslide, unstable slope, inventory, GIS, Zagreb

    Held: from 06/17/96 to 06/21/96
Summary: In the paper general engineering-geologic conditions in Croatia are presented. A regional distribution of landslide distribution of landslide occurrences depending on geologic feature, relief, hydrogeological and climatic conditions have been noticed. Also, the influence of the region seismicity upon the slope stability has been taken into consideration. The experience obtained so far on the engineering-geologic mapping for the purposes of geotechnical works is described. The paper also presents the method of data collection, monitoring, analyses and presentation of the data. Due to the regional representation of landslide types, the characteristic models of instability can be adopted for the particular regions. The damages caused by landslides, the social-economic moments as well as the conventional methods of remedy are considered. Thus, a basis for zoning after slide hazard and risk will be established. All the data are planed to be covered by the GIS-technique. At present in the Republic of Croatia the Zagreb region endangerd by landslides is of particular interest and it is intended to be used as a pilot region for zonning methodology. The work on the landslide inventories continues in accordance with the current data processing requirements. The mentioned approach and the experience so far would be used to provide better solutions of the problems in the field of geotehcnical engineering.

Summary: A 14 km long tunnel through Ćićarija is the capital facility of the railway connection between Istria and other parts of Croatia. It is a part of optional solutions in which the future Adriatic Railways could fit in.
