Summary: Paleogene shelf and reef carbonates, as well as
shallow- marine clastics occur in Slovenia, Northern Croatia, and northern
Bosnia. The queston is if there was any connection between Mediterranean
and Pannonian realms. The comparison of sediments, depositional
environments, and biostratigraphic data suggest that there were time
intervals when these two realms have been connected by a seaway.

Summary: Investigation of suspended matter and bottom sediments at
theAdige River mouth (Italy), indicated the sedimentation pattern
ofsuspended matter in the shallow. low-energy, shelf Adriatic
Sea.Grain-size distribution and the mineralogical and
geochemicalcomposition of samples collected during high and low
dischargeindicate a consistent sedimentary pattern. Fast sedimentation
offine-grained riverborne suspended matter occurs in the prodeltazone due
to deceleration of river flow and spreading into themicrotidal environment.

Summary: Suspended particulate matter has been studied in two
Adriatic river mouths (Krka and Adige Rivers) to assess its role as a
transport vehicle for wase disposal into the Adriatic Sea. In the Adige
River mouth Pb, Cr, Zn, and Ni are accumulated in the prodelta sediments,
and thus the loading of the sea with metals is diminished, whereas in the
Krka River estuary desorption and mobilization of some trace metals occurs.

Summary: Mineral composition of recent sediments and sedimentation
pattern in the Krka river estuary were analyzed. The data on mineral
assemblages of recent sediments and of suspended matter from the estuary,
are discussed in relation to the main sources of recent sediments. The
results indicate the restricted zone of prevalent sedimentation of
terrigenous matter in the enlarged Prokljan Basin. The sedimentation in the
estuary was found to be very low due to the scarcity of input.

Summary: The clastics include cross-laminated and cross-bedded
sandstones produced by marine tractive flows, mostly directed toward E/ESE
,and dominantly massive sandstones probably deposited by gravity flows. The
area was situated close to sand-rich sources and river mouth(s). Possible
settings include a delta-related shallow-marine area, and a sea strait.
Structural deformation governed the evolution of complex Outer Dinaric
foreland realm very early.

Summary: Cross-bedded sandstones have been deposited by migration of
dune sand large-scale compound forms. Features indicating tide-ebb, and
spring-neap periodicities together with paleocurrent directions, indicate
tidal currents as the main factor of the bedform dynamics, and origin of
cross-bedded sandstones. The Rab portion of the ancient tidal sea was
dominated by tidal flows directed towards SW. A part of the so-called
coastal flysch trough was a shallow sea.

Summary: Based on the analyses of facies associations, and vertical
sequences Promina alluvium is considered to have originated in two types of

Summary: The early compressional disturbances in Northern Dalmatia
resulted in deposition of the Jelar Breccia in two consecutive phases. The
Eocene Flysch in the same area represents distal equivalent of the Jelar

Summary: The basic style by which the lower portion of the Promina
Alluvium was bild up are the repeated advances and abandonments of the
alluvial belts, and related stacking of coarse-grained sheets and
floodplain deposits. The main factors responsible for the dominance of the
sheet-like geometry are high sediment supply, and high aggradation and
subsidence rates. Deposition occurred on alluvial plains, situated between
proximal alluvium and marginal-marine zone.

Summary: Petrographic methods may help in recognition of the
provenence of materials, which were used by Paleolithic man for producing
his tools. It may also serve for a better understanding of the habits of
fossil man. Identification of rock types and their proportion in the
materials found indicate a close vicinity of sources, which were
represented by fluvial gravel. The man, therefore, did not move far from
his residence place in the search for his tools.

Summary: Sedimentologic research in two Croatian river mouths (Krka
River-Šibenik and Raša River-Istra) indicated the lack of riverborne
terrigenous material due to the prevalent dissolution of carbonates. A low
energy environment along with water circulation characteristic for
stratified estuaries, and the enhanced flocculation at the
freshwater/seawater interface leads to the fast sedimentation of most of
the riverborne material in the upper parts of the investigated estuaries.
It is suggested that term "karstic estuary" should be used for such river
mouths.

Summary: The paper deals with the role of particulates, their
sedimentation pattern and adsorption properties in transfer of trace metals
from land to sea. The rapid sedimentation of fine grained, mostly clay
mineral particles in a small rock-bounded disequilibrium salt-wedge estuary
is enhanced by the flocculation process. Most of the heavy metals
accumulate in the proximity of the river mouth due to adsorption to clay
minerals.

Summary: The study describes the stratigraphic succession of
internal sediments occurring in some caves of the Dinaric Karst. The
succession contains peculiar speleothems, which are characterized by the
growth on all surfaces of underground voids. These phreatic speleothems
enable a better insight into the evolution of the voids. The cave studied
shows three evolutionary stages: (1) dominatly vadose, (2) phreatic, and
(3) dominantly vadose.

Summary: Besides the already known supply of detritus to the Dinaric
Paleogene foreland basins from the Dinarides, and partly from the Alpes,
there was also a supply from the outer, southwestern side. Istrian
peninsula shows such an example. The Eocene Pazin Flysch Basin received
carbonate detritus from the south-southwesterly situated carbonate platform
as documented by paleocurrent measurements. This platform peristed during
the Eocene.

Summary: The Promina Beds in Northern Dalmatia comprise floodplain
carbonate mudstones deposited during floods. They were modified by
pedogenic processes, that resulted in immature soils. These features
reflect a high aggradation rate. The paleosols studied can not be assigned
to a standard soil class and represent carbonate analogues of Entisols and
Fluvents.

Summary: Three Paleogene units have been differenciated in the
northern Adriatic offshore. (A) Paleocene to early Middle Eocene carbonate
basinal sediments reflect an influence of the Istrian Platform. (B) Late
Middle Eocene and Late Eocene deposits reflect the introduction of an
additional siliciclastic component, presumably from the north. (C) Latest
Eocene and Early Oligocene marls indicate the shallowing of this part of
Venetian Basin.

Summary: Alluvial floodplain carbonates mostly originate by
biochemical and chemical precipitation. Alluvial sediments of the Promina
Beds contain fine-grained carbonates which are detrital in character. These
sediments have been deposited in river floodplains and represent carbonate
analoques of siliciclastic floodplain mudstones.

Summary: Some caves in the Dinaric Karst of the central Croatia show
specific speleothems which cover all void surfaces. This speleothems
reflect long-term, meteotic phreatic regime in the underground voids. As
the phreatic speleothems are deposited along entire cave channels, they
represent useful stratigraphic marker which can help in deciferind
depositional and hydrologic history of caves.

Summary: An attempt of applicability of morphogroups of
agglutinating foraminifera in paleoecological study was carried out in the
Middle Eocene flysch deposits of central Istria. Three morphogroups out of
four described by Jones and Charnock (1985) were recognozed in material
studied. Environmental interpretation is based on relative abundance of the
various morphogroups and species diversity within morphogroups.

Summary: Fine-grained sediments occurring within alluvial Promina
Beds in the area Karin-Kruševo consist of laminated and bioturbated
siltstones, calcitic marls and marls with coal. Features of these sediments
indicate dominant deposition from suspension, within floodplains, that were
exposed intermittently. Depositional setting correspond to distal part of
alluvial fan. Coarsening-upward sequences including fine-grained sediments,
sandstones, and conglomerates have been produced by progradational
tendencies of the system.
