Summary: During the drilling of horizontal (or highly deviated)
wellsthere are more serious problems than in drilling of verticalwells.
These problems are: excessive torque and drag, holefilling, pipe stucking,
hole instability, circulation losses, formation damage, difficulties at
logging and poor cementation. From that reason the mud for horizontal
drilling must have suchproperties which insure improved cleaning, cutting
suspension, good lubrication and relative low formation damage. The
mosteffective fluid for such purpose is a biopolymer (XC) drillingfluid. In
this article composition, properties and application ofthis type of fluid
are described.

Summary: During workover in the wells we predominantly use NaCl,
CaCl2 orCaBr2 solutions.Since formation water contains considerableamounts
of HCO3 and SO4 ions and CaCl2 and CaBr2 brine highconcentration of Ca
ions, there is a real chance to get CaCO3 orCaSO4 percipitate. The fine
particles of this percipitate cancause serious formation damage of layers
in borehole surroundig. To confirm the percipitate occurence laboratory
investigation wasperformed at different pH values of fluids and at
temperatures of25, 50 and 75 grades of Celsius. The percipitation with water
richin HCO3 has occured and with SO4 failed.

Summary: Potentiodynamic anodic polarization measurements on mild
steel insolutions of sodium molybdate, prepared with tap water, haveshown
that the addition of small amounts ofpolyhydroxycarboxylates, gluconate or
borogluconate increased theinhibition efficiency. The presence of layers of
the oxide oroxyhydroxide layers on the metal surface is necessary for
theprotection. The same effect, less pronounced, was observed alsowith
tartarate. The concentration of the added citrate adequateto the content of
calcium ions in the tap water, prevents thepercipitation of molybdate.

Summary: The paper presents the most essential eleements fo methan
extraction from coal and possibilities for application of that method i
Republicof Croatia. The method is relatively new and is developing fast all
over the world. It is suitable for application in Europe, which still has
large coal reserves. By the extraction of methan from coal, the socalled
clean energy is obtained. Because of that, such methane production has
state support in US, which enhances its economical application. The
Republic of Croatia has quite significant reserves of coal exceeding 250
million tons. Since opening of new coal mines not foreseen, application of
the proposed method may enable partial utilization of energy potential of
these reserves, if naturally conditions for that exist.

Summary: The laboratory investigations showed that production
decline of Stari Gradac-5 gas condensate well has been caused by
solidification of polymer after setting the gelled brine plugs during well
completion operations. The procedure for disintegration of viscoelastic,
highly chemically resistant material, formed downhole under extremely high
temperature conditions, was designed in laboratory. After performing the
well stimulation job, the increase of gas and condensate production proved
the prosperity of this specific method for removing the formation damage.

Summary: The formation damage which is manifested in reduction of
rock natural permeability, generally is caused by alteration of clay
minerals as constituents of formations. The clay in contact with wellbore
fluid (completion brines, mud or cement filtrate) may expand or disperse
them depends of their composition and origin. Great role in that process
plays apH value of wellbore fluid, its salt concentration and ionic
strength. The intention of this paper is to explain achieved results of

Summary: In order to select a proper material for the fabrication of
wear parts in various tribological systems, it is necessary to consider the
factors which actually make the system itself, physical properties of
material structure essential for the function, and tribological
characteristics relevant for the selection of certain material. The
construction of a device for testing piston materials in mud pumps,
definition of testing procedure and evaluation of the obtained results are
treated in the paper. The tests were carried out on two different samples.
The results have been elaborated, based on measured friction forces and
relevant friction coefficients, loss in mass or volume, linear intensity of
material wear, average shear stress and apparent energy density of
friction. Besides the described application of the device for simulating
the hydraulic section of the mud pump, it can also simulate many other
actual tribological systems.

Summary: Most of gas and oil fields discovered up to day in Croatia
represent the hydrocarbon accumulations in layers of low permeability. To
increase production it is necessary to re-drill many old wells. It can be
done by drilling with coiled tubing. Before that there are several problems
that must be solved. First of all is the construction and manufacture of
injector head of enough load capacity for increased weights when large
diameter coiled tubing is used. Stresses associated whwn drilling with
positive displacement motors, drill collars and other bottomhole assemblies
should be computed and tested due to torsion to ensure that they can resist
the torque during drilling.

and more). The application of lasers for theillumination of the seeded
fluid flow allows introduction ofoptical methods that yield accurate
velocity data (SpeckleVelocimetry and Particle Image Velocimetry). The rate
ofvelocities to be measured range from very low to about 500 m/s.The
principles of Particle Image Velocimetry together with itsrecent
applications in various fluid dynamics problems arepresented. ina addition
a concept of its application in gasindustry is proposed.

Summary: Hydraulic parameters regularly monitored in drilling
activitiesare jet velocity, hydraulic horsepower and impact force.
Existingmethods provide this parameters to be calculated only at thenozzle
outlet. PIV technique enables velocity measurements to becarried out
simultaneously over the entire profile of the flow, allowing hydraulic
parameters to be studied at any point betweenthe nozzle outlet and the hole
bottom. Various three-dimensionalnozzles tested have their application in
the improvement ofdrilling bit design, especially of PDC bits. Employed
techniquesallow effective evaluation of nozzles, better understanding ofthe
high velocity jet behaviour and may significantly contributeto the
optimization of drilling hydraulics.

Summary: The action of tanic acid of different concentration on the
rustedsurface of mild steel have been studied. The aim of the work wasto
protect a surface of metal partly covered with corrosionproducts. An
adventage of the procedure with tanic acid is itsecological compatibility,
low cost and the fact that when used inlow concentration does not provoke
local attack of the surfacewhich is otherwise a characteristic of other
anodic inhibitors. An inhibition action was demonstrated by anodic
polarizationmeasurement.

Summary: The most frequent reason for killing production wells is
anecessity to eliminate formation pressures so as to enablecertain
procedures or removal of some parts of productionequipment. In the process
of well killing it must be taken carenot to: cause formation damage,
additionally damage surface orsubsurface production equipment and exceed
the allowed stressesof production and other equipment. The standard
procedure adoptedin Croatia is described.

Summary: One of modern technical activities which enable optimal
workoverand maintenance of wells is the application of nitrogen, a gaswhich
is the most convenient gas for wellbore activities becauseof its physical
and chemical properties, economic advantages andsafety. By application of
nitrogen in wellbore activities inworkover and maintenance two facts are
substantial: applicabilityin situation of workover when necessary activity
cannot berealised by classical methods and , what is more
important, trealisation of the same activities much faster and lessexpensive
than it can be realised by classical methods.

Summary: The role of well comletion when considered in an overall
wellconstructiion process is a complex one. It includes analysis ofwell
purpose, collected data and assumption produced by variousspecialists whose
job is related to proper functioning of thewell during its "life time". The
well completion carried out onceduring the well utilization should be
considered ideal.Only, mostoften it is not possible to realise. Therfore,
it is necessary toconsider costs, equipment, and application of properly
timedprocedures for keeping the continuity of well production orinjection
in advance. In this paper the accomplishments in wellcompletion in Croatia

Summary: Coalbeds may contain methane which may be desorbed by
adequate depression in wellbores. Pore surface in coal in which methane can
be adsorbed usually is 3 to 7 times higher than pore surface of a gas
bearing sandstone. Gas inflow condition through coal to a wellbore in the
wellbore surrounding zone may be improved by hydraulic fracturing. In
convenient condition by each of wells up to 5000 m3 of gas per day may be
produced and by a few local need of a smaller settlement can be satisfied.
Beside ecological advantage of application of gas as fuel, by degasation
coalbeds safety condition of a mine is improved in case of later subsurface
mining of partially degased coalbed.By investment need, by mean of
application and by safety of continous suplly this mean of unconventional
energy production has advantages compared to other, up to now studied
unconventional energy sources.

Summary: Under combination completion of gas production wells we
consider all situations when one or more of the following exists: more than
one size of tubing, more than one size of casing, and two or more fluids in
the tubing and /or annulus. Such problems (movement and forces) are solved
as though each section is a separate uniform completion and tubing is
initially free to move. Analysis and solving begin with the lowermost
section and the algebraic sum of each section's length change is the total
length change. Neglecting of such approach and simplifying by reducing on
uniform zype can result with failure and recompletion expenses.

Summary: PIV&LDV, two non-destructive methods for fluids flow
velocity tests, were applied for investigetion of velocity measurement of
drilling fluid from drilling bit jets. PIV enables planar measurement of
the flow profile while LDV enables one-point measurement only. Jet
velocities on various distances from nozzle were measured and hydraulic
horsepowers and impact forces for the same distances were calculated.

Summary: The laboratory tests and attempted well stimulation jobs,
that an inconvenient type of formation damage caused by solidification of
calcium bromide - calcium carbonate high activity synthetic polymer system,
under temperature above 180 deg Celsiusa, used as temporary viscous plug
downholw, could be successfully removing using chemical treatment. The
method requers sequential injection of oxidant (NaOCL+NaOH) followed with
inhibited organic acid (CH3COOH) into damaged zone around wellbore. The
comparison of laboratory investigation data and field application of method
is expressed.

Summary: he use of chemical inhibitors is very often the most
efficient way of preventing the corrosion of metalsin many industries in
spite of continuing advances in development of corrosion resistant
materials. There are also continous demands for improved technical
performance of inhibitors and at the same time an increased awareness for
the environmental safety. The mechanism of action and influence of the
inhibitors on the rate of corrosion in the near-neutral media (pH=5-9),
have been investigated and discused in the paper on the basis of the
literature and the results of the authors experimental work. It was
demonstrated, by electrochemical and weight loss measurements, that
commonly used passivators, as nitrites, phosphates and chromates, toxic or
provoking eutrophication substances, can be completely or at least partly,
replaced by some ecologically compatible chemicals, as benzoates,
polyhydroxycarboxylates, and less toxic passivators, molybdates and
borates.

Summary: In order to select a proper material for fabrication of
wearparts in various tribologycal systems it is necessary to
considerfactors which actually make the system itself, physicalproperties
of material structrue essential for the function andtribologycal
characteristics relevant for the selection ofcertain material. The
construction of an instrument for testingmaterials of seals in mud pumps,
definition of testing procedureand evaluation of the obtained results are
treated in this work.

Summary: In theoretical part the paper is dealing with exact
hydrocarbon fluid composition studied by mathematical modeling of phase
behavior and volumetric prediction with Equation of State. Step by step is
shown recent calculation of phase behavior applying K-factors determined
from fugacity components by Equation of State. In case of the Žutica oil
field, a mathematical model of Peng-Robinson Equation of State was created
and applied in stimulation of a two thermodinamical process: a) gas
injection in reservoir attaining a miscible conditions; and b) gas storage
process. The results from two studied cases of possible oil-reservoir
managing ways show that the reservoir for gas storage is in many ways
better than applying the residual oil production regime by supporting
reservoir pressure with gas injection.

Summary: Dissertation represents the first non-medical use of X-ray
computed tomography method in Croatia. After comprehensive preliminary
studies in methodology development CT imaging has been utilized in the
analysis of original reservoir rock core samples (obtained from wells in
Croatia, Slovenia and Siberia), in order to evaluate its lithological
homogenity, visualization of unconsolidated structure, determination of
rock porosity and studies of formation damage phenomena. The results showed
the evidence for the CT method applicability on formation damage studies:
mechanical (drilling mud - barium sulphate invasion) and
chemical-mechanical (cement slurry - coprecipitation of low soluble salts),
as well as fracture ayimuth determination (after microfracturing
operations).

Summary: The casing setting depth selection of each individual type
of casing strings is an essential stage of the casing program as an
integral part of the well planning. An analysis has been made, based on
comparison of forecast and actual conditions in selected exploration and
development wells of the north-western area of the depression of Sava river
of the Panonian basin, where the application of various methods of casing
design reflects on the final selection of the casing. Optimizing the casing
design forsuch a delicate surrounding has in view the reciprocal dependence
of a number of factors and only by reconciling them shall an economically
viable and balanced solution be reached, acceptable from point of view of
tolerating of a necessary or permitted risk, of the safety of the progress
of further technological process, of the safety of equipment, labour and
environment.
