Summary: The review of pavement thickness design methods on the lowbearing capacity soil with built in geosyntetics, whitconsiderations to their possibilities is presented. The Giroudand Noiray method developed on the basis of empirical formulasand theoretical analysis is presented and discussed. By thismethod it is possible to determine the thickness of pavementstructure made of granular stone material over soft soil, withadequate choice of geosyntetics.

Summary: A multiparametar analysis of the pavement structure system consisting of a granular stone layer built on low bearing capacity soil, over geosynthetic membrane, is made. Minimal necessary thicknesses of the granular stone layer for various input parameters such as traffic, soil characteristic, geosynthetic type and permissible rut depth, were determined. Using accapted cross-section of the road and actual prices of construction materials and works, total costs of each variant pavement structures were calculated (236 variants) and optimal pavement structure type was selected. The intensity of the effects of individual parameters, on the pavement structure costs was analysed, too.
Keywords: soft soil, geosinthetics, granular stone layer, analysis, costs

Proceedings title: Saopćenja savjetovanja Geotehnika prometnih građevina

    Pages: from 365 to 372
    Meeting: Geotehnika prometnih građevina
    Held: from 10/05/94 to 10/08/94
Summary: The analyses of a long series of pavement structures systems with geosynthetic on a low bearing capacity soil are presented. Applying the invers form of Giroud and Noiray method, pavement structures were anlyzed in terms of various influence parameter combinations, such as subgrade soil bearing capacity, geosynthetic modulus and the allowed rut depth. The analyses of pavement structures were run regardly to passing possibility of 100 kN axle loads. It was found that allowed rut depth has a particularly significant effect on the axle loads passing possibility. The relationships between individual influence parameters were established and quantified. It was globally concluded thet the effect of geosynthetic is low at low values of the allowed rut depth, proportional to geosynthetic modulus at average allowed rut depth at low bearing capacity soil and significant at high values of the allowed rut depth at low bearing capacity soil.
Keywords: soft soil, geosynthetic, granular stone layer, analysis, Giroud-Noiray method

Title: THE EFFECTS OF GEOTEXTILES IN PAVEMENT STRUCTURE
Faculty: GRAĐEVINSKI FAKULTET SVEUČILIŠTE U ZAGREBU
    Date of defense: 06/17/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 94
Summary: The paper discussed the manifold actions of geotextiles inpavement structures. The functions of separation and filtration are considered indetail, describing the ways and mechanisms of action regardingthese functions. When studying the reinforcing function, extensive numericalanalyses of action of geotextiles in unbound pavement structureson low bearing soil have also been caried out. The "tool" chosenwas Giroud and Noiray's method, developed on theoretical analysesand empirical ralationships, and taking into account all relevantparameters of influence. Applying this method, a long series ofpavement structures was analysed, widely varying the inputparameters, such as subgrade bearing capacity, modulus ofgeotextile and the allowed rut depth. The analyses were related to traffic load bearing capacityexpressed in total number of 100 kN axle passes, at varyingcombinations of parametres of influence. It was determined that the allowed rut depht has a particularyinsignificant effect on the load bearing capacity of pavementscontaining geotextiles. The relationships were quantified, and it was globally concludedthat the effect on the traffic load bearing capacity is generallyas follows: - the effect of geotextiles is low at low values of the allowed rut depht for any bearing capacity of soil; - the effect of geotextiles is significant at high values of the allowed rut depht on low bearing soils, and significant on high bearing soils.
Keywords: geotextile, pavement structures, granular material, low bearing capacity siol, rut depth, traffic
