Summary: Disign methods for swelling materials are burdened with a
greatnumber of unknowns, as in the behaviour of swelling rock, so by abroad
spectrum of rocks tending to swelling. The complexity ofthe problems is
illustrated by the experience gained during theconstruction of two tunnels
in Algeria. The tirst example shows acase when swelling, predicted based on
the laboratory tests, didnot occur during the execution. The second example
shows a caseof rock swelling in a tunnel floor occuring by a
completelydifferent mechanism of swelling than that estabilished by
priortesting. The experiences presented confirm the fact that the lawof
swelling determined in a laboratory connot be copied directlyto in situ
conditions.

Summary: A technical solution for discharging 25 milion m3 of
wastematerial from steelworks onto soft soils is presented in thispaper.
Significant engineering geological, hydrogeological andgeotechnical
proparties of the waste dump terrain are described.The model of the
possible soil failure is selected on the basisof appropriate investigattion
works. Finally, the waste dump(drainage system, waste dump height,
discharging schedule etc.)was designed on the basis of results obtained
through suchanalyses.
