    Summary: The paper deals with the computation of the length of a meridianarc by using trigonometric series. The coefficients of theseseries are also usually represented as series. It is stressedthat it is more convenient to represent these coefficients by theparameter n instead by the customary e or e'. Several forms oftrigonometric series have been investigated with the purpose ofreducing the amount of the needed calculations. The dependence ofthe meridional distance calculation accuracy on the accuracy withwhich the geodetic latitude is known has been taken intoconsideration, as well as the effect of neglecting some terms ofthe series. From this research a new form of the formula for thecalculation of the length of a meridian arc has been derived.

    Summary: The work deals with setting up the equations of normal aspect ofgnomonic perspective conical projections. The extreme values oflocal linear deformations and main directions are being thenresearched for these projections. The absence of localdeformation in all directions is being closely examined anddetermination of the directions along which there are no azimuthor linear deformations is being considered in details. Theequations of constant distortions curves of angles and areas arebeing derived. All theoretical researches are illustrated bymeans of adequate graphic presentations.

    Summary: On the occasion of the anniversary of the city of Zagreb(1092.-1992.) and the Zagreb diocese (1094.-1994.), a research ofthe Map of the Zagreb diocese (Mappa Dioecesis Zagrebiensis) hasbeen carried out. The Map, dating back to 1825 was made by JosipSzeman, an episcopal and prefectural land surveyor from 1817until 1844. On the scale of 1:150000 the Map contains primarily acomplete survey of settlements, religious afiliation of allinhabitants, organization of the Catholic church, as well as apanoramic view of Zagreb, so it is considered to be a first ratecartographic document dating back to the beginning of thenineteenth century. Translations of Latin texts and statisticaldata on the Map and alongside with it are also published in theresearch. Along with a separately published fascimile of the Map,the translations open up new possibilities for further researchof occurrences and conditions of that time in the CentralCroatia.

    Summary: The areal symbols are primarily achieved by manual drawing, then by means of certain devices and machines, through the application of print, conventional and unconventional photography and finally electronically. The offered data bases of areal syumbols belonging to the programme packages for accomplishing the Desk Top Mapping, DTM: ARC/INFO, AutoCAD and CorelDRAW have been analysed. One's own new patterns have been generated according to the patterns applied for differentiation of subjects on the old, wood-cut maps, then copperplates and cartographic portrayals multiplied by means of lithography, as well as according to the patterns the creation of which has been enabled through photography and digital procedures of compilating, creating and reproducing the maps.

The manual and automatic digitizing and the processing of vector and raster data are described as well. The possibilities of digital cartography are presented in determining the area of the Croatian internal waters and territorial sea, in the cartographic generalization of the coastal line in Istria and the town centre of Split, in the production of the thematic map portraying the settlements and county districts in Croatia and in the perspective relief representation.

     Summary: A new direct solution of the transformation problem of cartesianinto geodetic coordinates is presented. From a geometrical pointof view, this problem consists of finding the intersection pointat the reference ellipsoid by orthogonal projection of a spacepoint to the ellipsoid. It was shown that this problem isequivalent to the problem of finding the roots of a fourth orderalgebraic equation. By means of certain unconventional parametricrepresentation of the ellipsoid, it is shown that one can easilyand accurately calculate just the true solution of thecorresponding fourth order algebraic equation.

     Summary: At the Faculty of Geodesy University of Zagreb the boundaries ofthe county districts of Croatia have been digitized from the mapat the scale 1:1000000 which has been made in the Gauss-Krgerprojection. There were about 19000 points digitized all together.The data file of points in the Gauss-Krger projection has beenachieved by means of Helmert transformation from the digitizerlocal coordinate system on the basis of control points(intersections of meridians and parallels). The area of theRepublic of Croatia can be determined now as the sum of allcounty district areas, while the area of a single countydistrict is calculated on the basis of rectangular coordinates ofthe points at its boundary, having thereby in mind the correctionwith respect to the projection.

     Summary: In classical approach to the conical, cylindrical or planeperspective projections only the normal aspects have beenconsidered. It means that the axis of the cone or the cylinder,or the normal of the plane, resp., coincided with the axis ofrotation of the earth's model. In general perspectiveprojections, described in the paper, the perspective center andthe surface of projection may be situated in any position withrespect to the object. It is shown that all these projectionshave a common basis and therefore can be studied together. Thederived formulae have simple forms, appropriate forcomputer-aided graphical representations.

     Summary: The cylindrical perspective is considered as a composition ofmapping an object (e.g. the earth's sphere or ellipsoid)according to the laws of linear perspective on the cylindricalsurface and of developing that surface on a plane. It is assumedthat the center of projection (the point of view) can be in anyrelation to the cylinder, as well as in any position with respectto the object which has to be mapped. The proposed derivations offormulas are characterized by a simple geometric approach, andthe resulting equaitons have a simple form, appropriate for thecomputer-aided graphical representations.      Summary: In classical approach to the conical projections only the normalaspects are considered. It means that the axis of the conecoincides with the axis of rotation of the earth's model. Ingeneral conical perspective projections, described in this paper,the perspective center and the cone may be in any position withrespect to the object. The general conical perspective projection is studied as acomposition of two mappings. First, it is a linear perspectiveonto the conical surface, and then a usual developing onto aplane. The derived fundamental formulas have a simple form,appropriate for the computer-aided graphical representation.

The data file ofpoints in the Gauss-Krger projection has been achieved by meansof Helmert transformation from the digitizer local coordinatesystem on the basis of control points. The area of singleterritory unit is calculated on the basis of rectangularcoordinates of the points at its boundary, having thereby in mindthe correction with respect to the projection. In that way thearea of islands and Croatian Sea can be determined.

     Summary: A procedure for obtaining computer-aided perspectiverepresentations of the terrain of Zagreb Upper Town and Kaptol isdescribed. First of all, for those parts of the terrain which arenot represented by isolines on the existing maps new contours areconstructed. Then, a digitization of the isolines is performed.From datafiles obtained by digitization, a single datafileconsisting of about 58000 points is composed. Since the programSURFER, which we use to get perspective representations, is notable to accept such great number of points, the appropriategeneralization by filtering is performed. Then, a regular grid ofpoints is constructed and on that basis the perspectiverepresentations are obtained by using x-, y- and z-lines.

     Summary: With regard to their contents and outer appearance the map facsimiles are the most authentic reproductions of the originals. They continue to keep, transfer and spread the information about the contents of the old, rare maps. They have been made manually for centuries, photomechanically in the last century and the half, and in the last two decades, electronically. As shown on the examples, the scanner systems enable the elaboration of highly valuable facsimiles, especially if in its final phase the reproduction is done by means of printing in the single colours of the original, instead of applying standard fourcolour print. The off-set print is applied for the reproduction of facsimilies. The facsimiles of the specially valuable maps, published in small editions, are sometimes reproduced in almost forgotten collotype, because then they are most similar to the original.

     Summary: The boundary lines of territory units such as county districts or islands of Croatia have been digitized at the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb. The data files in Transverse Mercator (Gauá-Krger) projection have been achieved by means of transformation from the digitizer local coordinate system on the basis of the greater number of control points (intersections of meridians and parallels). This paper investigates the accuracy of coordinates of the data files points. The research is performed by comparing theoretically identical points which are digitized on a few maps made at different scales. The estimation of coordinates accuracy is necessary for the evaluation of different data which can be derived from the coordiantes, being for example the area of county districts or the length of the boundary.

Furthermore, the entire earth taken as a sphere is transformed onto each half of the globe, establishing thus the Gilbert's globe. That is the sphere with two conformal images of the earth. It represents the world as people usually see it, form space and in the round, but at the same time it represents the whole earth's surface.

     Summary: Generally, a conic section pencil is defined with four real different fundamental points (type I). In the type IV the two fundamental points coincide and we have one double fundamental point. Then, any common tangent to all curves of pencil runs through that double point. In the type VI there are two double fundamental points. In that case the common tangent to all curves of pencil runs through any of the two double fundamental points. The curve of all isotropic focal points is the geometrical location of contact points of all tangents drawn from the absolute point F to the curves of the pencil. In classifying the conic section pencils the curve of all isotropic focal points can be applied. It can be shown that this curve is generally a curve of the 3th degree. The graphic representation of conic section pencils can be practically performed by using a computer and plotter. In order to represent the curve of all isotropic focal points graphically, one needs its equation in a parametric form. In the paper the parametric equations of such curves are developed. The three cases which arise in classifying the conic section pencils of the type IV and VI are discussed.

     Summary: The paper analysis and estimates the topographic maps od the Risnjak area, made as the direct result of the the geodetic and topographic measurements, from the second half of 18th century up to now. Geomorphologically very divided relief forms of Risnjak, especially with a lot of even very deep sink-holes, dense vegetation and scattered path network, have been ever since, a big obstacle for the classical, and even for the aerial photogrammetric topographic surveying. Therefore it is not surprising, that the new methods of topographic surveying and the larger scale of mapping in this area have not achieved everywhere the expected more complete and more accurate cartographic portrayal.

     Summary: Already on his first drawings, man tried to illustrate various sorts of objects. The cartographic symbols or the means of cartographic communication have been changing along with the appearance and development of new drawing techniques and drawing reproduction. Sometimes they are created by manual drawing, then with certain devices and machines, by using the print facilities, conventional and unconventional photography and today electronically. The program package for the realization of Desk Top Mapping (Auto CAD, CorelDRAW and other) convey a very wide range of different symbols, buth they also enable the generating of their own patterns. However, it requires the coordination of the relationships among graphic elements on the map, i.e. one should take into account the perceptibility, systematic and logical nature, and standardization while selecting and creating the symbols.

     Summary: The areal symbols are primarily achieved by manual drawing, than by means of certain devices and machines, through the application of print, conventional and unconventional photography and finally electronically. The reproduction originals for four colour print of the general map of the National Park Paklenica have been generated in the Cromacom-System, located in "Hrvatska tiskara" (Croatian Printers) in Zagreb. The offered data bases of areal symbols belonging to the programme packages AutoCAD and ARC/INFO have been analysed. One's own new patterns have been generated according to the patterns applied for differentiation of subjects on the old, wood-cut maps, copperplates and cartographic portrayals multiplied by means of lithography, as well as according to the patterns used in the Geography of Croatia and General Encyclopedia.

     Summary: The paper describes the determination of intersection points of air corridors with the state borders of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the determination of the distance from single radio navigational devices to the referring border point. While determing the intersection of the air route and the state border, it has been presumed that the projection of the air route onto the earth's ellipsoid is a geodetic line. The possibility of replacing the geodetic line with the straight line in Transverse Mercator Projection having the central meridian 16.30' and the scale on the central meridian 0.9997 is investigated. The performedexamination has shown that the accuracy will be about a meter.

     Summary: Several cartographers have dealt with the derivation ofexpressions for general perspective projection of the earth.Their derivations are in general rather long and clumsy, and thefinal form of their formulas is such as well. The simplicity ofthe derivation and of the final expressions, described in thepresent paper, is the consequence of the applied approach - nottaking the sphere (or the ellipsoid) in the consideration fromthe very begining, but starting in a more general way. Theproposed geometric approach is very simple, and the resultingequations have an appropriate form for the computer assistedcartography.

     Summary: The cylindrical perspective is considered as a composition ofmapping an object (e.g. the earth's sphere or ellipsoid)according to the laws of linear perspective on the cylindricalsurface and of developing that surface on a plane. It is assumedthat the center of projection (the point of view) can be in anyrelation to the cylinder, as well as in any position with respectto the object which has to be mapped. The proposed derivations offormulas are characterized by a simple geometric approach, andthe resulting equations have a simple form, appropriate for thecomputer-aided graphical representations. The enclosed drawingsare examples of the results that can be achieved by the designedsoftware for the cartographic purposes.

     Summary: The accuracy of area determination from a map or from a database depends on the field measurements, the accuracy of map production, the procedure of measurement from a map and on the computation method. Any of the mentioned components can be further analyzed and estimated in details. To illustrate the difficulty of the problem, let us emphasize the fact, noted from other authors as well, that in the literature one can find a set of different, often opposite statistic data, associated to the same feature. As a rule, the source and the accuracy of published data is not stated. Naturally, the same circumstances we encounter when we want to learn about larger territory unit areas, especially the state areas. It turned out that this is also true for the area of the Republic of Croatia. The most frequent numerical value is 56538 km2, but there are some different values as well. At the Faculty of Geodesy University of Zagreb the boundaries of territory units of Croatia have been digitized from the map at the scale of 1:1000000 which has been made in the Gauá-Krger projection with the central meridian 16o30' and the linear scale of 0.9997 along the central meridian. Using our system DIGITRAN for digitization and transformation, the database with points in the Gauá-Krger projection has been obtained. The area of the Republic of Croatia can be determined as the sum of all county district areas, while the area of single territory unit is calculated on the basis of rectangular coordinates of the point at its boundary, having thereby in mind the correction with respect to the projection.
