Summary: The effect of casting dope parameters like a dioxane to acetoneratio and a maleic acid content in the process of asymmetriccellulose triacetate membrane preparation were investigated. Theresults were considered in terms of possible pore sizedistribution in the membranes skin. It was found that the secondparameter, the maleic acid content, played a significant role inthe formation process, affecting strongly the performance ofmembranes.

Summary: The behaviour and the properties of particulate materials are to large degree dependent on their distributions. Frequently theparticle size distributions obtaine dby experiment are consideredinsufficient and one strives for approximate the measured valuesby an analytic function. It is believed that a successfulapplication of a distribution function should depend not only onthe simplicity of the function but also on the aggrement betweenthe properties of a real particle size distribution and themathematical properties of the function. Any function proposedfor describing particle size distribution should satisfy theboundary conditions that come from physical considerations.

Summary: Deep bed filtration is an engineering practice of long standingand is usually employed to remove fine and colloidal particlesfrom dilute suspension. The investigation of deep bed filtrationhas been developed in two directions: to provide a morefundamental understanding of the deposition mechanisms, and topredict dynamic behaviour of deep bed filters. A review of published investigations and the recenr theories ofdeep bed filtration was presented here.

Summary: This study was undertaken to make a systematic research ofdependence of silica particle size distribution on operatingvariables during the neutralisation of fluosilicic acid. The laboratory apparatus was used for preparation of silicasamples which were immediately analysed by a Sedigraph 5000E. Theparticle size distributions were defined by the parameters of theRRSB distribution function. During the experiments only one single parameter observed at atime was varied. It has been found that the raising of residence time, fluosilicicacid concentration, pH and temperature cause the formation oflarger silica particles. The combination of these parameters with the rate of agitationgives silica particle size distribution of determined size.
    Keywords: particle, silica, fluosilicic acid.

Summary: One of the most significant factors for an efficient filtration process is chemical pretreatment of suspension. This procedure is carried out to destabilize electrically charged solid particles. In this paper the bentonite suspension with different polyelectrolyte concentrations were filtrated. The filter coefficient was taken as an efficiency parameter, which enables prediction of optimal destabilization conditions, as well as good filtration. Furthermore, the changes of particle size distribution during filtration runs were measured to explain which polymer interaction is dominant and how the suspension dispersity affects filtration efficiency.

Summary: The good cellulose triacetate reverse osmosis membranes have been prepared by the phase separation technique. The membrane properties were influenced by the membrane casting dope composition, mostly by the dioxane/acetone ratio and the maleic acid content in the casting dope. The distinctive membrane performances were caused by different pore size distributions and various numbers of pores in the membranesž skin. The improved pore size distribution analysis and the calculation of both the effective number of pores and the active part of the membranesž surface area have shown a wide spectrum of the network pore size and usually one size group of bigger aggregate pores.

Summary: There are two limiting laws describing the suspension process:the off-bottom state ang generation of homogenous suspension. Thefirst law applies to large particles in a small stirred vesseland the second to small particles in a large agitated tank.Equating the two suspension criteria a critical diameter ratio ofparticle size to vessel diameter is obtained. A question ariseswhich suspension correlation fits the best the experimentalresults in the range of critical diameter ratio. The results showthat the Kneule's correlation fits the best.

Summary: The possibility of the application of Adin's phenomenologicalmodel to the understanding of transport and attachment mechanismsin deep bed filtration has been investigated. The calculatedvalues of Adin's macroscopic parameters have been connected withmicroscopic parameters which describe those mechanisms. Series of experimental runs of deep bed filtration were conductedwith solid suspension of defined particle size distribution andconcentration. Filter medium was polymer "Amberlite IR-120L" ofspherical particles. On the basis of experimental data the attachment and detachmentcoefficients and filter coefficient have been calculated. Fromexperimental values of the filter coefficient the collectorefficiency has been calculated, what provide description oftransport and attachment mechanisms. The result show that the experimental values of filtercoefficient and collector efficiency are compatible with thetheoretical ones.

Summary: One of the factors that influences porous structure of asymmetric cellulose acetate membranes as well as their chemical stability is acetyl content (AC). In this work, alkaline hydrolysis (ph=9.85) of CA and CTA membranes in reverse osmosis equipment, under real conditions, was studied. The changes of transport characteristics of membranes (A,(Dam/Kd),k) due to hydrolysis were measured with a sodium chloride solution. An increase of the measured values was observed as a result of the hydrolysis. The findings can be attributed to the increase of the average pore size in the skin layer. The membranes were also tested with solutions of different markers ( nonpolar, spherical organic molecules). To determine the pore size distribution in the membranesž skin layer, before and after hydrolysis, the "Surface Force-Pore Flow" model for RO/UF transport was applied. The results indicate the polydispersity of pore. The pore size distribution curves confirm an increase in the pore size due to hydrolysis. All the results have shawn that in the investigated range of pH, CTA membranes are chemicallymore stable than CA membranes. Therefore, the former are more suitable for application.
