Summary: The natural and economic choice for many developing
countriestrying to increase their energy production is the increased useof
coal. This would, however, cancel the efforts of developedcountries to
reduce the global emission of CO2. It is shown thatit would be very
difficult to expand energy production indeveloping countries and control or
reduce CO2 emission withoutextensive use of the nuclear energy in
developing countries.Reprecussions of such conclusions are considered.

Summary: Basic assumptions of nuclear plant decomission are
defined, described are current decomission scenarios and assumed are
thebasic strategic guidelines of eventual decomission of NPP Krko.Analysed
are the radiological and thermal influences on thepeople's health and the
enviroment that are caused by NPP Krkowould generate during its future
regular operation as well as inthe case of a possible accident. The same
approach is applied tothe analysis of decomission influence of people's
health andenviroment. The judgement of of influence of substitute
(thermal)sources on people's health and environment also presented.
Thequantitative part of analysis shows that postponed SAFESTORdecomission
scenario from the aspects of people'e healthprotection and environmental
protection would be the mostsuitable for the eventual NPP Krko
decomission. The risks of NPPKrko shut-down include the combination of
risks that appear bynuclear plant decomission and substitute thermal plant
operation. From the risk aspect it is shown that the earlier shut-down
ofNPP-Krko together with the substitute production from classicalplants is
unjustifiedly unfavourable related to continuation ofNPP Krko operation.

Summary: The public awarenes of nuclear risks associated with
radioactivewaste disposal and large scale accidents lags behind
thetechnical developments and solution which are capable ofsatisfying any
reasonable safety criteria. This false perceptionscan have the effect that
the more important long term problems beneglected. In the paper it is
pointed out that the compatibilityof the large scale development of
peaceful nuclear power with thenuclear disarmament to the very law level
requires a number oftechnical measures and the strenghthening of
NuclearNonproliferation Treaty. It is printed and that the
technicalsolutions for elimination of proliferation risks are possible, but
require a considerable development of internationalcooperation in nuclear
energy.

Summary: SEnsational announcement by Fleischmann and Pons of the
roomtemperature fusion has been disproved by a number of leadingworld
laboratories. After discussion of the fusion processesruled out by these
observations, it is concluded inthis paperthat a cold fusion could not be
regarded as an energy source, even if the existence of some more exotic
physical processes oflow probability leading to fusion could be proved.

Summary: Arguments for spent fuel dry storage at power station site
forsmall or medium nuclear systems in direct fuel cycle arepresented.
Assuming that such a storage consists of steel linedconcrete cylinders
containing 21 spent fuel assemblies, additional dose rates at the site were
calculated. Standard PWRfuel assemblies of NPP Krko with 33 GWd/MTU and 55
GWd/MTUburnup and after 5 and 10 years of cooling time were supposed.Using
functional module SAS2 of SCALE modular code isotopeinventory of spent
fuel, neutron and gamma angular fluxes anddose rates at several points
outside the concrete shield werecalculated. Finnaly, additional dose rates
at site boundariesfrom arrays of such concrete casks placed upright on a
concretepad were estimated and presented for various assumptiona.

Summary: Feasibility and gains of combining intermediate conversion
coreof pressurized water reactor, i.e. semitight lattice,
andcorrespondingly increased fuel utilization with the convenienceof open
fuel cycle are considered. Global core calculations wereperformed in order
to evaluate possible fuel saving. Forunfavourable case saving of at least
10% is possible. Argumentsare presented that intermediate conversion
spectral shift lightwater reactor appear to be likely candidate to fulfill
both be of interest for number developing countries likely to considerthe
nuclear option by the turn of the century.

Summary: The future of nuclear energy depends an affirmative answers
onquestions 1) is the use of nuclear energy necessary from thepoint of view
of energy resourcesand requirements, 2) is thenuclear energy acceptable
from the safety point of view, 3) wouldthe wide spread use of nuclear
energy be compatibile with anefficient nonproliferation regime. Whilst the
present knowledgeand technical development require, respectively
supportintroduction of nuclear energy from the point of view of firsttwo
questions, it is argued that a nonproliferation safetycompatible with
nuclear disarmament to a very low level poses amuch greater problem.

Summary: In recent years theoretical and experimental work was
intensifiedon muon-catalysed fusion, a nonconventional alternative
tothermonuclear fusion with magnetic or inertial confinement.Present status
of muonic fusion is presented and parametersessential for the possibility
of energy production are disscused, primarily energy required to produce one
muon and a number offusion cycle rates catalysed by one muon. Basic mesic
atomicmechanisms which decide the efficiency of catalysis are shown
andrecent experimental data on them given. Relationship betweenmuonic
fusion, respectively muonic fusion-fission hybrid, andaccelerator system
for production of fissile nuclides isdiscussed. At present conclusions are
not favourable to muonichybrid.
