Summary: The aim of the paper is to present the variations of mean menarcheal age in girls in Croatia over last three decades. Research has started in Zagreb in 1964 on the representative sample of school girls. Survey were repeated in 1973, 1982 and 1991. In the late seventies research has been extended over Croatia. Up to 1983 survey was performed in 24 localities. The next series of research took place from 1987 to 1993. In the first period, 1977 to 1983, mean menarcheal age in different parts of Croatia varied in the large scale, from 12.7 in Zagreb to 13.9 in Benkovac. Early menarche, mean age 12.70-12.89 except in Zagreb, was noticed in girls in three other big cities (Rijeka, Split and Osijek). Late menarhe - the average over 13.30 years - was observed in Western Slavonija and Croatian Zagorje, while the latest was noticed in Continental Dalmacija (13.6 to 13.9). Differences of menarcheal age according to parents occupation suggested a strong influence of socio-economic factors. In whole period from 1987 to 1993 the range of menarcheal averages is considerably narrower, 12.76 to 13.28. In certain localities in which surveys were performed in both periods - Nova Gradiška, Rijeka and Međimurje, a shift of menarche towards the younger age is clearly observed. On the contrary, in Zagreb and Split, an oposite trend was noticed, a slight shift of menarche towards older age.

Title: ASSESSMENT OF GENETIC FACTORS IN VARIABILITY OF MENARCHE

    Authors:
    Jakić, Marijana
    Prebeg, Živka (38594)
    Journal: Liječnički vjesnik
    Number: 5-6

    Year: 1994
    Pages: from 123 to 127
    Number of references: 20
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The purpose of the study was to assess the correlation of menarche and the similarity of other features of pubertal development at the onset of menarche in sisters compared to girls which are not in kinship. The longitudinal study was performed in school girls in the city of Osijek. 74 pairs of sisters i.e. 148 girls aged 9 6o 15 in which the menstrual cycle had not started were embraced. The "nonrelated pairs" were formed within the same group of girls. Results showed the significant intrapair correlation of menarcheal age between sisters whereas the correlation in nonrelated pairs did not exist. The body height at the onset of menarche in both groups of pairs was positively correlated, but significance was on higher level in sisters. Body weight varied in a large range; the intraclass correlation being significant in pairs of sisters only. Menarche appeared in almost equal distribution of breast and pubic hair stage. However, the developmental stage in both characteristics showed considerably higher concordance in sisters. Results confirm that age of menarche as well as the total, complex course of pubertal development are under high influence of genetic factors.

Title: VARIATIONS IN PUBERTAL CHANGES AND THE ONSET OF EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS

    Authors:
    Prebeg, Živka (38594)
    Journal: Paediatria Croatica
    Number: spl1
    ISSN: 1330-1403
    Volume: 39
    Year: 1995
    Pages: from 153 to 158
    Number of references: 23
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Age of the onset of pubertal changes varies in different children. The time-span between the onset of puberty and the attaining of the full physical maturity is different as well. So the children of the same age are in different phases of physiological maturity, hence their emotional and social needs differentiate too. However, the persons from their environment - parents, teachers, peers - often do not recognise their real needs, so the necessary support is lacking. Therefore the great deal of educational difficulties, behaviour disturbances and even emotional crises might have the roots in the neglected comprehension of great but normal variability in physiological maturation. Variations in particular pubertal changes are presented in the paper.
Keywords: Puberty, pubertal changes, adolescent growth spurt, secondary sex characters, menarche
