Summary: Some anatomical variations of the choanal region may
facilitatesnoring: 1. Neonatal relation of the height and width of
thechoanae resulting in a very large choanal region in adults. 2.Short and
thin vomer withouth crista choanalis vomerisadaptational formations. 3. An
extreme concavity of the posteriormargin of the hard palate, in which case
there exists asisproportion between the muscular and aponeurotic part of
m.tensor veli palatini. All these variations may result in a flabbysoft
palate especially during sleep and lead to the formation ofwhirls of
inspired air and snoring.

Summary: the dimensions of the intracranial and orbital openings of
theoptic canal as well as the length and height of the superiororbital were
macerated disarticulated skulss of humans fromnewborn to adult age. It was
found that the dimensions of thevertical intracranial diameter of the optic
canal do not changethroughout life (4.30-4.34). On the contrary, the
horisontaldiameter of the intracranial opening increases from 4.40 to
5.60mm. During postnatal development the vertical diameter of theorbital
opening decreases (5.1-4.88) while, at the same time, itswidth increases
(3.59-4.65 mm). The length of the superiororbital fissure is reduced on
average from 20 to 18.4 mm, while,at the same time, its width increases
from 67.9 to 89.4 mm. Thecorpus ossis sphenoids and the ethmoid increase in
width in thesuperior (15.4-28.8 mm) inferior (15.4-35.7 mm) direction,
thusnearly completely covering the optic foramen and the medial partof the
superior orbital fissure. The optic nerve has chance anS-shaped course to
reach its correct position. Theserelationships are of great importance in
the surgery of theparanasal sinuses and orbit.

Summary: Variations of the medial and inferior choanal limits
mayfacilitate snoring. These are: 1) short vomer without cristachoanalis
vomeris and adaptional formations, 2) extremly concaveposterior margin of
the hard palate leading to diaproportionbetween the muscular and
aponeurotic part of m. tensor velipalatini and hence to a flabby soft
palate specially duringsleep, and 3) neonatal relation of the width of the
choanaeresulting in a very rarge choanal region instead of
relativereduction of choanal width compared to its increasing height.
allthese variations result in a flabby soft palate especially duringsleep
and may lead to formation of whirles of inspired air andsnoring.

Summary: Three hundred macerated and partly isolated postmortem
mid-facialbines were studied for the development, variations and
dimensionsof the structures of the nasal cavity. On 184 axial CT bones(102
male, 82 female) from patients ranging in age from 1 to 90years old, the
dimensions of the ethmoid labyrinth and sphenoidsinus werw studied in
detail in order to determine which anatomicsituation may be unsafe during
clinical endoscopic interventions.Six anatomic variations were identified.
Most unsafe for surgeryseemed tobe following types: type III, in which the
anteriordiameter of the ethmoid labyrinth was large and the
posteriorethmoid and sphenoid diameters were relatively narrow; type V,
inwhich both ethmoid dimensions were large and sphenoid diameterwas narrow:
type VI, in which the ethmoid albyrinth had an"hour-glass" shape. Present
findings indicate that CT orientationbefore any endoscopic intervention
might help to avoid seriouscomplications.

Title: Does the Alveolar Process of the Maxilla Always Disappear

Summary: the existence of the alveolar process depends on the
developmentof teeth. In edentuolus maxillae, the alveolar process
disappearsin general in the region of incisives, canines and
eventuallypremolars, but it persists in over 80% of cases in the region
ofmolars. The perswistence of the alveolar processes correlateswith
pneumatisation of the alveolar process by the alveolarrecess of the
fmaxillary sinus. The sinus may invade the wholealveolar process or only
part of it so that in its lower part athicker bone layer persists. Very
rarely the alveolar processdisappears completely with the loss of the
teeth. The deepestrecess of the maxillary sinus corresponds to the level of
thezygomatic process i.e. to the region of the first and secondmolar teeth.

Summary: This work presents the development of the foramina and
canals ofthe sphenoid bone, between birth and 80 years of age in men
andwomen on both sides. The results of this work are based onmeasurments on
439 human skulls. The results point out height, width and cross-section area
of foramina and canals of thesphenoid bone depending on age, sex and side
of the head. Themeasures of the foramina and canals of the sphenoid bone
changecontinously from birth to death. This study proves
negativecorrelation between velocity of width-growth of the median partof
the median part of the sphenoid bone body in comparison to thelateral part
of the sphenoid body, intwo years old children. Thedifference between the
velocity of with-growth of the median partof the sphenoid body and the
lateral part of the sphenoid body inmen and women persists only at deep
portion of the median part ofsphenoid body. This study presents also a
persistant foramentransitorum in men and women in significant per centage
on bothsides up to thirty years of age, opposite to the data in
theliterature according to which the foramen is present only infetal life.
In this study we presented also the difference ofgrowth-rapidity of
foramina and chanals of the sphenoid boneduring embryonic and fetal period.
This study discusses thedimensions of the foramina and the chanals of the
sphenoid bone, depending upon biological variability concering age, sex and
ofthe head.
