Summary: The aim of study was to examine why differences exist
inschizophrenia prevalence and risk in some areas of Croatia,
whenschizophrenia incidence rates do not appear to vary. According
toCroatia's Psychotic Case Register the admission risk rates arehigher in
those parts of Croatia where emigration rates are highand lower where
immigration rates are high. Thus the patientsfrom population with greater
prevalence rate and greaterhereditary loading have a lower reproduction
rate, the incidencerates in populations with different prevalence and
differenthereditary loads are maintained roughly equal over generations.

Summary: This paper briefly analyzes the data on Croatia's
PsychoticCase Register (CPCR) hospitalized schizophrenic patients.
Theanalysis is by individual contingents and selected parameters(age, sex,
commune of birth, commune of residence, treatmentinstitution) for 1965,
1970, 1975, 1980 and 1987. The rates ofincidentally admitted patients, of
patients found in hospital oncensual date and of hospital deaths do not
show statisticallysignificant differences in the observation period.
However, therises in admitted patient rates, admission rates and in
thenumber of hospitalizations were significant. Only the fall in therate of
long-term (throughout-the-year) admissions wasstatistically significant. As
these parameters reflect theobservation period's changes in the hospital
care ofschizophrenic patients, they would be valuable indicators in
anevaluation of psychiatric care.
