Summary: The effects of pharmacological pinealectomy (Px) on
leverregeneration and lymphatic morphostasis were studied in ratstreated by
evening injections of propanolol. The data have shownthat Px might inhibit
the early phase of liver growth andexpression of class II antigens in
regenerating tissue. Theseeffects were followed by marked changes in the
spleen (in theproportion of CD4, CD9, OX-33, OX-42, Mac-1 and Mac- 3+
cells).Some of these effects might be reversed by melatonin.

Summary: The special properties of the zinc cation, which permit its
incorporation into both the active sites of enzymes and as a protein
conformational stabilizing cation, are described in this paper. The
structure of superoxide dismutase, one of the most important enzymes in the
eucariotes for removal of the free radicals, as Zn-containing enzyme, is
also reported. We have inserted some preliminary results obtained from the
investigations about Zn distribution in different tissues. Some products
with zinc, as food supplement products, are also presented in the paper.

Summary: Lauric acid esters of sorbitol, 1,4-sorbitan and
1,4:3,6-isosorbide were synthesized in laboratory.Esterification was
carried out at 160oC with a catalyst for sorbitol cyclization and
esterification,viz.,p-toluenesulfonic acid.Lipid classes and polyols were
separated and analysed by GC as Trimethylsilyl ethers and esters.The
purpose of the study was to determine the suitability of GC analysis of
these products as a means of following the progress of reactions.The
results confirmed the possibility of monitoring lauric acid and sorbitol
esterification via the GC determination of lauric acid concentration.

Summary: The observed factors of the influence on disaccharidase
activity in the intestinal mucosa, hepatectomy and Sandostatin,
statistically significantly change enzyme activity, depending on the
localisation and type of enzyme (maltase, sucrase or lactase). Sandostatin
mainly causes a decrease of disaccharidase values, probably due to the
direct inhibitory effect on pancreatic cholecystokinin secretion. The
influence of hepatectomy is more complicated and it cannot be reduced to a
common denominator.

Summary: The indomethacin (IND) administration significantly
inhibited the accumulation of nucleic acids, decreased the concentration of
alpha2 globulins in the mice six days uppon partial hepatectomy. In sham Hx
and intact animals, IND did not change the content of hepatic nucleic
acids, but produced an additional decrease of alpha1 and increase of gama
globulins, as compared with the unoperated mice. From the obtained data we
concluded that arachidonic acid metabolites might act as local hormones
capable to modify the action of various agents that initiate and regulate
the compensatory liver growth and the synthesis of major acute phase plasma
proteins.

Summary: In this study the biological activities of the immature
forms of the antimicrobial peptides. We have shown that proBac7 is a
monocyte-elective chemoattractant, potentially contributing to the
recruitment of these cells to infection sites, whereas proBac5 efficiently
inhibits the in vitro activity of cathepsin L, a cysteine proteinase
thought to contribute to tissue injury in inflammation.

Summary: Four peptides were characterized in extracts of bovine
neutrophil granules: an Arg-rich dodecapeptide, maintained in a cyclic
structure by a disulfide bridge; a Trp-rich tridecapeptide named
indolicidin; and two 43- and 59 aminoacids long peptides, named Bac5 and
Bac7, with frequent repeats of the triplets Arg-Pro-Pro and Pro-Arg-Pro,
respectively. The full length cDNA of the first three of these peptides was
characterized recently. sequence analysis showed that the prosequence of
the predicted precursors of all the three peptides are highly identical and
exhibited also a remarkable similarity to cathelin, a porcine inhibitor of
cathepsin L. Purified proBac5 actually proved in in vitro assays to
inhibit cathepsin L, but not other cysteine proteinases such as cathepsin
B. Unlike proBac5, proBac7 is selectively chemotactic to monocytes. Several
fragments of Bac5 and Bac7 (from 6 to 35 residues) were synthesized by the
Fmoc method. The results of antibacterial assays show that the N-terminal
portion, the most cationic one in both Bac5 and Bac7, is essential for the
antimicrobial activity and that the minimal length necessary to arrest the
growth of susceptible bacteria is 18-20 residues.
