Summary: The system of automated lumber defect detection is of
crucialimportance for a future system of automated element production.The
defect detection system must be sensitive to changes inexternal and
internal qualities of lumber and capable ofoperating under plant
conditions. This paper defines andclassifies lumber defects, specifies the
requirements for anautomated defect detection system and briefly describes
variousdetection methods (optical, ultrasonic, microwave, X-ray andneutron
method). The study also describes lumber defect detectionmethods in today's
plant conditions.

Summary: This paper describes a computer program to grade southern
pinelumber. The program was developed as part of research
projectinvestigating the benefits of scanning southern pine logs
forinterior defects. It evaluates two-dimensional andthree-dimensional
lumber defects as described in Southern PineInspection Bureau Grading Rules
for Finish,Boards,StructuralLight Framing,and Structural Joists and Planks.
Potentialapplications include evaluation and process control
atheadrigs,resaws,edgers,and trimsaws in sawmills.Application mayalso
include on-line lumber grading in mills and the training oflumber graders.

Summary: The main objective of this study is to find possibilities
forautomatic determination of the methjod of furniture partsproduction from
boards.The study proves such automateddetermination possible by means of
corresponding computer programfor simulated cutting of boards.The computer
program optimizesfurniture parts production on thje basis of board defects
(numberof defects and their disposition) and the required dimensions ofthe
corresponding furniture parts.Following the input of data onboard defects
and dimensions,the computer optimizescrosscutting-ripping and
ripping-crosscutting of the board,and bycomparing the two best optimization
solutions (with regard toquantity yield),chooses one of the two,suggests
the cuttingmethod and the coordinates of cuttings,and predicts theresults.

Summary: The difference between the dimensions in which boards are
produced,
and the dimensions in which they are sold is called oversizes. In
spite of huge significance for sawmilling, the problems of oversizes
are often neglected. The oversizes are dimensions that cannot be sold,
but they must given in order to ensure the selling dimensions of
boards. Except with oversizes for shrinkage, considerable savings may
be realized by correct giving of other oversizes, especially the
oversizes due to sawing inaccuracy. Regardless of possible savings,
the employers on many sawmills do not care about the sawing
inaccuracy, although this is a factor that can do significant
financial damage, and on the other hand produce significant financial
profits.

Summary: SUMMARY: In this study are analyzed most important factors
of the
sawlog quality of spruce and fir spicies. The "log quality" is here
understood in a wide sence: as the quality and the defects of the wood
itself, as the log sizes, log form, and the degree and way of it's
preparation for sawing in a sawmill. The purpose of the study is to
show how big influence has the quality of logs for a successful
sawmilling production as a effect of previous silvicultural and
logging operations.

Summary: SUMMARY: The more evident problem in relationship between
forestry and
sawmilling makes huge difficulties in sawmill and final wood industry.
On the decreasing of raw quality addings are conditions of purchasing
and payment in a short term. With a known time terms of kapital
turning in wood industry, this problem becomes bigger. In this
conditions works not only sawmilling, but whole department 122 (veneer
production, board production, cellulose industry). In this reasons it
is necessery to solve the problems between forestry and wood industry
on both pleasures, because this is in interest for forestry and wood
industry, and the whole society.
