Summary: The parts of window frames, produced by laminating softwoodprofiles using PVAc glues, were exposed to both indoor andoutdoor climatic conditions("differential climate") for 19months. The profiles, especially their outer portions, gainedlarge amounts of moisture during exposure, what was partlyincreased by delamination. The moisture content and dimensionalchanges were recorded. The moisture content was dependent on therelative humidity, and inversely dependent on the daily durationof sun. The distribution of moisture in profiles is the decisivefactor affecting dimensional stability, particularly bowing anddistortion.

Summary: Components of window frames, produced by laminating profiles of 3softwood lamellae using PVAc glues, were exposed to "differentialclimate" conditions for 18 months and to laboratory acceleratedaging methods (water soaking;application of water soaking, heating and freezing cycles). After 18 months exposure 78% ofwindow profiles exhibited delamination on the weather-exposedsurfaces. The glue bond strength was not significantly impairedduring natural exposure, as long as the delamination had notoccured. On the other hand, both laboratory accelerated agingmethods substantially reduced the glue bond strength. Thelaboratory aging methods can demonstrate the differences in thequality of window profiles.

Summary: The influence of moisture on the photodegradation rates forfour different timbers was investigated using the changes in thetensile strength of thin wood strips to monitor the photochemicalbreakdown of the wood. Exposure to ultra violet light was carriedout in the QUV weathering apparatus under 4 different levels ofmoisture ranging from 30% relative humidity to soaking in liquidwater. The changes in tensile strength of the strips under the differentmoisture conditions were found to be complex and there was astrong influence of moisture on degradation rates. A mathematicalmodel was derived to describe the experimental results and tocompare photodegradation rates for different wood species andconditions. The greatest differences in photochemical resistanceof the different timbers were found under dry conditions; underwet conditions, rates of breakdown for the 4 species were broadlysimilar. In addition, if exposure was carried out under dryconditions, there appeared to be a greater increase inphotochemical resistance of the cellulose component than of thelignin.

Summary: The surface microgeometry was tested by quantitative method(usingstylus instrument) and qualitative method (by touch evaluation)on beech and oak veneered chipboard samples sanded by means ofdifferent sanding treatments and various finess of sandpaper. Theparameters Ra, Rz and Rmax were used to determine the surfacemicrogeometry by contact (stylus) method. It turned out that theabove parameters were satisfactory enough to determine thesurface microgeometry, however the parameter Ra was not suitablefor oak veneered samples. The finest surface quality was achievedon the samples sanded by wide-belt contact sanding machine (gritsize 100-120) additionally moistened, redried and finally sandedby belt sander (grit size 150).

Summary: This paper discusses the effect of grit size, the fibre andsanding direction and various sanding treatments on sandedsurface roughness. As expected, the experiments have shown thatthe surface roughness is smaller as the DIN Grade No. ofsandpaper is higher, and that the roughness of the sanded surfacein cross sanding is generally smaller than in longitudinalsanding (along the grain). Additional sanding of beech veneeredspecimens with sandpaper 220,following the sanding with sandpaper180,resulted in no significant improvement in surfaceroughness. Among 16 various sanding treatments, the one withsandpapers DIN Grade No. 100,150,180, sanding along the grain, proved most efficient.

Summary: The main objective of this investigation was to determine theeffect of the blunting of sanding belts (grit sizes 100 and 120)on sanded surface roughness before and after moisturing. Theroughness measurment was performed using theprofilograph-profilometer Rank Taylor Hobson (Talysurf 10). Beechveneered specimens were sanded with a new belt(blunting 0%), witha worn belt (blunting 100%) and with a rather worn out belt(blunting 110%). Before moisturing the roughness of the samplessanded with the new sanding belt was greater than the roughnessof the samples sanded with worn belt. The increase in roughness after moisturing is more pronounced onthe samples, sanded with the worn sanding belt than on thesamples sanded with the new sanding belt, but that has noinfluence on the surface quality if the service life of thesanding belt has not expired.

Summary: The aim of the work was the investigation of the bond strength of various edging materials glued with four different hotmelts to the flat edge of a particleboard. Futher interest was to establish the most suitable methods for assessment of the strength of the bond between the edging material and the particleboard. The experiment has been performed on the nonveneered, 18 mm thick particleboard with the application of following edging materials: PVC strip, 3 mm thick paper strip, 0,6 mm thick HPL laminate (strip), 0,9 mm thick solid beech (lath), 12 mm thick Those materials were edge-bonded using hotmelts on various bases: - ethylene/vinyl acetate copolimer (EVA) - polyamide (PA) - polyolephine (PO) - polyurethane (PU). The strongest bonds with all materials have been achieved with PU adhesive. The analysis of the bonds with various edging materials at low temperatures revealed the bonds with PVC strip as the poorest, those with HPL strips as mediocre, and the bonds with paper and solid beech as the strongest. At medium and high temperatures the type of adhesive influences the bond strength to a greater extent than the edging material.

Summary: In all aindustrialcountries pollution is very high and environmental protection has been promoted for many years. Paints industry joins in by developing and improving finishes in which non-economical, and health hazardous organic solvents are replaced with cheap non inflammable and healthfriendly water. Lately, tehnology of waterborne coating for wood has developed considerably. It could be expacted that many manufacturers will choose this technology for ecological reasons, but successful introduction of wateborne products requires familiarity with their properties and problems that could occur when threy are used. Besides the composition of water-based lacquers and this compatison with organic solvent-based Lecquers, this paper discusses specific problems in application and the issue of finishing treatment and that of recycling process, which is very topical in west European countries.

Summary: The paper presents investigation of various types of hot melt adhesives, whith emphasis on the application of the new types of hotmelts in furniture production and manufacturing of other final wood products. Investigation embraced adhesives on the following basis: - ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA) - polyamide (PA) - polyurethane (PU) - polyolephine (PO). The adhesives were comparatively tested for their resistance to changes of temperature and climatic conditions. All the bond strengts tests were performed on T-shaped shear samples (DIN/EN 204). EVA, PA, PO and PU hot melt adhesives exhibit different characteristics under the conditions of - temperature changes - prolonged elevated temperature - cyclic climatic changes. PO and PU adhesives show greater resistance to all of the mentioned conditions, the PU adhesives proving the best in all the tests. EVA adhesives are least resistant to law temperatures. EVA and PA adhesives show significant decrease in strength with prolonged elevated temperature and cyclic climatic changes. Their use for the production of furniture that is to be exposed to adverse conditions is therefore disputable.

Summary: The article discusses issues related to the flammability of upholstered furniture. It presents the development so far of flammability control and the research done in the world. The article briefly describes different flammability test methods and various fabric treatments. In view of the domestic industry's increasing needs and requirements for high quality fabrics meeting European and wrld standards, and our country's commitment to promote export industries, the Final Wood Products Chair of the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb has conducted research in the field of upholstered furniture's flame resistance. Tests were performed on a type of bed/mattress produced by a domestic manufacturer, and they followed the ISO 8191 standard. During the exposure of the fabric to a source of flame (a live, smouldering cigarette) the cloth got carbonized while the upper filling layer melted and became partly carbonized. Not even 60 ,inutes after the cigarette had burnt out was there any progessive smouldering of the fabric or any burning in flames The type of cigarettes used can be considered appropriate for the flammability tests on upholstered furniture following the ISO 8191-1 method (a live cigarette).

Summary: Wood durability is affected by outdoor climatic conditions, mainly by action of light and moisture. High maintenance costs determine the need for investigation of photodegradation process and means of its prevention. The QUV is an accelerated weathering apparatus which serves to predict the relative durability of materials exposed to outdoor environment. Rain and dew are simulated by a condensation system and the damaging effects of sunlight are simulated by fluorescent UV (ultraviolet)lamps. Materials are tested by exposure to alternating cycles of light and moisture, at controlled, elevated temperatures. In a few days or weeks, the QUV can reproduce the damage that occurs over months or years out of doors.

Summary: Register allocation is the final phase of the compiling processin which processor characteristics are taken into account. Duringthe process of register allocation, physical registers areassigned to the symbolic registers aiming to minimize the numberof dynamic references of memory locations. The registerallocation procedure is based on the interference graph coloring. The problem of graph colourability is NP-complete and, therefore, heuristic methods, which yield satisfactory results in polynomialtime, are applied. The paper describes Chaitin's registerallocation procedure. The procedure is simulated for adjacencymatrices of interference graphs of various densities. Results ofregister allocation are shown for one CISC and one RISCprocessor.

Summary: The paper presents some determinants of the future developmentand application of wood joinery in different European regions. The advantages of the application of wood for joinerymanufacturing are reviewed. Competition of that material withmetals and plastics will depend on economic improvements inproduction, increase in durability and accentuation of aestheticand ecological values of wood. Principal functional requirements on wood joinery (particularlythermal and acoustic insulation) are considered, as well as theirinfluence on the development of joinery construction andapplication of new materials and technical inventions.Technological and technical aspects which at present mostsignificantly determine the development of wood joinery are theapplication of laminating technology and preservation andfinishing of joinery. These topics are discussed in detail. Thepossibility of fulfillment of functional requirements in terms ofnew European standardization is discussed from points oftraditional background, regional climatic conditions andtechnical and design experiences in different European countries.

The parts of joinery frames were tested during 18-month exposureto both indoor and outdoor conditions ("differential climate"),and using an originally developed accelerated aging method. Thedurability of door samples proved high, but the quality of windowsamples is insufficient, as 78% of them showed delamination aterexposure. The bond strength seems to be inadequate, and the heatand water are a major factor in the unsatisfactory formstability.

Summary: The promotion of the use of wood flooring depends - besides aestetic aspects - on the quality of flooring elements (parquetry) and prefarbicated flooring panels. The control of the moisture content and dimensional and form consistency is an obligatory phase in production process. The requirements on flooring in use reveal other characteristics of surface layer or the whole floor construction which must be determined and controlled, especially when the use of uncommon wood species or combination of species indicates possible problems in use. The production of prefabicated flooring panels does not demant only the control of wood properties, but also the control of other materials (adhesives, finishes), their adequacy for use with particular wood species, and the control of the parameters of the production process.

Summary: Wood finishing is the last phase in furniture manufacture and has great influence on the quality of the final product. The quality of wood finishing depends on many factors: preparation of wood substrates, type of finish and methods of applying finishes and curing. The control of these factors assures the quality of wood finishing. Such control should not be considered like additional cost than like investment in the product of quality.

Summary: The susceptibility to weathering of wood surfaces and their consequential high maintenance demands discourage the exterior use of wood and highlight the need for methods of enhancing the resistance of wood to photodegradation. Weathering processes in the surface layers of wood have been studied by measurement of the tensile strength changes occurring in 75 micrometar thick softwood strips during exposure to natural weathering or several regimes of artificial weathering. Microtensile testing at zero and 10 mm span enabled the relative changes in cellulose microfibril strength and the lignin -dependent properties of the matrix to be distinguished. The technique was found to offer a rapid, accurate and reproducible means of evaluating the chemical and structural changes involved in the weathering of wood and coated wood surfaces during weathering. Tensile strngth curves indicated three phases in the degradation process. The initial phase was characterised by a slow rate of strength loss, and at high humidity levels even an increase in strengrh. During the second and third phases believed to be associated with successive degradation of lignin and cellulose, strength losses were more rapid. Differences in the weathering behaviour of three softwood species were destinguished, and temperature, moisture and radiation source shown to expert strong influences on degradation rate. Artificial weathering was found to provide a valid alternative to natural weathering in systematic investigation of degradation mechanisms. SEM studies revealed that structural changes in the wood are associated with the early stages of photodegradation. Fractography showed that the progression of degradation involves the development of brittleness and reduction of stress transfer capabilities through lignin degradation, followed by reductions in microfibril strength resulting from cellulose degradation.

Title: MODIFICATION OF BEECHWOOD SURFACE FOR THE PURPOSE OF A BETTER GLUING
    Faculty: ŠUMARSKI FAKULTET ZAGREB
    Date of defense: 09/03/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 141
Summary: This study investigates the possibilities for improving thestrength and duration of the glued parts of beech-wood bymodification of the contact surfaces. The modification was madebay mechanical and chemical methods as well by ionization. Themechanically modified contact surfaces were planed, sanded withNo.60 granulation paper, and mechanically treated with steelplane. The chemically modified contact surfaces were then treatedwith 3M and 5M water solution of NaOH. The contact surfaes modified with ionization were groupedaccording to two sample types. One sample group was ion-rayedwithout a protection film in room atmosphere, while the secondgroup samples had been wrapped in impermeable polyurethane filmbefore being ion-rayed. Both sample groups were gama-rayed inabsorption doses of 25, 50 and 100 kGy. Following the contact surface modification, all samples werePVA-c glued and the shear strength of glued joint was measured. In addition, the wetting angle to liquids of different surfacetension was measured. The critical surface energy and the work ofadhesion, penetration and spreading were determined. A newpractical method of measuring top layer energy has beensuggested. The method has been applied to the samples wihmechanically modified contact surfaces. On these samples theavarage arithmetic deviation of the Ra-profile was measured andthe Wenzel factor of roughness calculated. The results showed that the increase of critical surface energyis followed by the increase of glued joint stength. The highestglued joint strength as established on the contact of one sandedsurface and another gama-rayed 100 kGy without a protection film. With mechanically modified samples, the glued joint strengthincreased with the increase of the contact surface roughness. With chemically modified samples, the samples treated with lowerNaOH concentration showed higher stength. Gama-rayed samples withprotection film showed avarage glued joint stength.

    Date of defense: 07/11/91
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 153
Summary: The text deals with factors affecting surface quality andexperimental work related to the sanding and finishing of woodveneered panels. General considerations necessary for the whole treatment of theproblem are given at the beginning. In the first part of the research the surface microgeometry wastested by quantitative method (using stylus instrument) andqualitative method (by touch evaluation) on beech and oakveneered particleboard samples sanded by means of differentsanding treatment and various fineness of sandpaper. Theparameters Ra, Rz and Rmax were satisfactory enough to determinethe surface microgeometry, however the parameter Ra was notsuitable for oak veneered samples. The second part is divided in four groups: A) The effect of grit size and the fibre-and sanding direction onsanded surface roughness B) The effect of various sanding treatments on sanded surfaceroughness C) The effect of blunting of the sanding belt on sanded surfaceroughness D) The effect of various sanding treatments on the quality offinishing.

Title: REGISTER ALLOCATION BY GRAPH COLOURING
    Faculty: ELEKTROTEHNIČKI FAKULTET ZAGREB
    Date of defense: 01/26/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 89
Summary: Register allocation to program variables represents the finalphase of compiling. A more efficient register allocation speedsup the running of the compiled program. Designing the registerallocation problem as a graph colouring problem yields a simpleand efficient method for global register allocation. Each programvariable is represented by a node in the interference graph, andan edge between two nodes exists if the two variables are alivesimultaneously. If the interfernce graph can be coloured with kcolours so that any two neighbouring nodes are not assigned thesame colour, this means that k registers may be assigned to theprogram variables so that two simultaneously alive variables arenot allocated to the same register. Since graph colouring is anNP-complete problem, heuristic methods, which in polynomial timerender satisfactory suboptimal solutions, are introduced. Thework describes Chaitin's heuristic algorithm for registerallocation and its improvements. Also, differences in theapplication of the register allocation problem for CISC and RISCarchitectures are pointed out. In the experimental part, resultsof simulation for randomly generated graphs of different sizes, densities and node degree distributions are presented. It isshown that the poorest results are obtained when the probabilityof interference between two nodes is constant, i.e. when theexpectation of the node degree is equal for all nodes. The lesserthe uniformity of node degrees the better is the registerallocation. Thus, the lower limit of register allocationsuccessfulness is established. Based on the results ofexperiments presented in certain papers-namely, that for graphsobtained from actual programs the number of edges isapproximately 20 times the number of nodes- it is shown that 40registers is the limit above which all variables can be assignedto registers. Examples of the application of the graph colouringmethod are given for a number of actual processor architectures.
