Summary: The investigation deal with the submediterranean karst area
of Croatia, the area of the forest of Oak downy and Hornbeam oriental
(Querco-Carpinetum orientalis H-ić,1939), and were done on the experimental
plot Stilja, Vrgorac district. The entire leaf mass on the plots amounts
from 2.212 to 2.767 kg/ha and the quantity of green grass from 512 to 921
kg/ha with the quality equivalent of 186 and 213 kg.The experimental with
the goats started on May 1992.The goats stayed on the plots six months a
year, from the 19 May to the 19 November. The intensity of the damage done
by grazing and browsing is in accordance with the production of biomass and
the number of goats on the plot.Four goats browse 73 % of the entire leaf
mass or nearly everything that could be reached. The entire growth of kids
on milk and grassland during the period of four months was 21,7 kg and the
average daily production of milk 1,54 l a goat.

Summary: The decision about what to do with regeneration of woods
which were damage or destroyed by fire depends on numberous ecologic and
economic factor. The improvement is preceded by ecologic (pedologic and
climatic) and economic analysis of the purpose of regeneration. This paper
deals with various methods of improvement of such areas: a) leave the
vegetation to natural succession, b) planting, c) sowing d) combination of
the methods. The choice of method depends on the type of vegetation before
fire, whether it was native climatic-zone community or if they were foreign
sorts (mainly conifers).
Keywords: improvement of forest areas, fire, natural succession, planting, sowing, aotuchthonous (native) and foreign sorts, ecologic and economic factor.

Title: Usage of Native Deciduous Plants for Karst Afforestation
- Authors:
- Topić, Vlado (50244)
Degree level: M.A.
Summary: This paper deals with chois of species for afforestation of
the submediterranean karst area of Dalmatia. The investigation were carried
out on the experimental plot Klačine and they include seven native
deciduous plants Quercus pubescens, Carpinus orientalis, Fraxinus ornus,
Ostrya carpinifolia, Prunus mahaleb, Acer monspessulanum and Celtis
australis. The trees were measured in the 1.,11.,18. and 33. year. The
results obtained show that the quoted species, although they are native,
grow very slowly, because young plants of these species do not endure
degraded soil and in such conditions they die or just exist. With the
average height of 5,74 m in the 33. year it overtops the other deciduous
plants.Oak downy, as the most useful deciduous wood plant in this area, had
in the 11. year only 59 cm height and in the 33. year 3,11 m.
Keywords: native deciduous plants, afforestation, karst, Oak downy, Hornbeam orientalis, Ash flowering, Hornbeam hop, Mahaleb cherry tree, Montpellier, Southhern celtis, growth.
