Summary: Tobacco farms rent the land in much higher
percentagethan the others in order to overcome problems of the
agrarianstructure. Still, on our farms the share of tobacco in croplandarea
is up to 60%, compared to 30% on the tobacco farms in some
other analysed countries. According to the results of a survey on980 farms,
the land suitable for flue-cured tobacco has been usedup to 84%, on
average. The forces of technological progress andof economy scale have
enlarged the area under tobacco on
the farms up to the monoculture.

Summary: The milling industry passed through several important
periodsfrom 1945 to 1990. In the 1945-1958 period demand of millingproducts
exceeded supply and there was constant wheat import. After two fertile years
(1957, 1958), "arranging" conditions onthe wheat market, and because of
increased industrial andagrarian progress, the problem of wheat and flour
was completelynormalized and so it has remained until today. Since 1970
therehas been market surplus which has lead to chaos in the flourmarket.
Since then milling capacities have constantly beengreater than the real
needs of the population.

Summary: The tendency of export and export marketing was up to now
basedless on the natural and comparative preferences of
Croatianagriculture, and more on interstate arrangements and agreements. The
export of Croatian agriculture was not in function ofproduction, nor it was
acclimatizing to consumption on worldmarket. For a long period it was the
export of surplus ofagricultural products from unsatisfied and eternally
"hungry"home market. Valuable raw materials were exported at lowestprices.
Export marketing is undeveloped, and the research offoreign consumers,
distribution and promotion for our unknownproducts is just in its

Summary: In the paper is shown an structural analisys of production
resources of family farms. Also, paper deal with changes of this structure
in the 1981-1991 period.
In that period, a number of family farms decreased for 6%, and size of
their total used agricultural land decreased for 12%. In terms of structure
majority of family farms are small farms with modest averages of production
resources per farm.
In the same period a number of all livestock species decreased
considerable. On the other side, anumber of two-wheels tractors increased
2,1 times, and number of four-wheels tractors increased 1,65 times. Thus,
family farms are well supplied with energy per hectare of total used land:
4,1 kW/ha.
For state farms, in the paper is shown review of their ownership structure
and changes of number of newly founded enterprises by types.

Summary: In this work we have analysed seasonal fluctuations of
Prices on
Zagreb Egg Market. In the spring, when peasants sell theirproduction
surplus it comes to disorders on Egg Market. At theother part of the year,
supply is lower than demand. Big eggproducers use their monopolistic
position and by high prices theycompensate deficit from the first part of
the year.
We used Method of group data, Seasonal indices Method and ModelMethod for
analysis and prognosis of seasonal fluctuations. Withsome additional
informations, created Model can be useful forprognosis of egg price
movement.
In final part of the work we suggested measures for alleviation
the seasonal fluctuations of egg prices.

Summary: Hrvatsko zagorje is area in central Croatia with
favourableclimate and market
conditions for particular agricultural productions. Fundament
ofagricultural production
in this area are family farms. In the paper we analysecharacteristics and
use of family
farming resources with aim to stress some of their peculiaritywhich are
important in
designing of the Croatian regional agricultural policy.
The main features of family farms are extensive
production,selfsuficience and
fragmentation of production resources. About 94% of farms useless then 3 ha
of arable
land, what is less then Croatian average. In Hrvatsko zagorjethere is more
cattle per
surface unit and per inhabitant. Yields in crop production arelower then
state average
except in grass production and some fruit production. Productionper
capacity unit in
livestock productions is also lower then Croatian average.

Summary: Two decisions have been made in Croatia that are important
for the long-term development of agriculture. Croatia has applied for
admission to GATT (that is to the WTO). Secondly, a strategy of
agricultural development has been proposed and adopted in Croatia that is
"based on the measures of membership in GATT and long-term measures for
membership in the EU". Although the conditions for Croatia's entry into
GATT and the World Trade Organization are not known, it is expected that
Croatia will achieve conditions similar to those fulfilled by present-day
member countries with similar characteristics. On the basis of the "Urugvay
agreement" GATT obliges its members (a) to transform all protective
measures in the case of imports into customs duties (tarifs), (b) to reduce
the level of protection in the case of mports by an average of 36% compared
to the basic period (1968-1988), (c) to reduce financial support for
agriculture by an average of 20% and (d) to reduce export incentives (by
36%). The strategy for the development of agriculture that has been adopted
has as its staring point a reform of the farming policy, taking into
consideration Croatia's obligations toward GATT. The farming policy will
undergo changes and will be enhanced by the established strategic
directions in the short term in the medium term and in the long term. In
this respect, we would like to stress the reforms and re-allocations of the
farming budget, as well as changes in the pricing policy, the customs
tariff policy and the development policy. The impact of the farming policy
that has been implemented up to now on the prices of the chief agricultural
products, the level of protection of domestic prices (the coefficients of
nominal protection) and the possible impacts of the general changes in the
farming policy on the tobacco industry, primarly tobacco growing, are
investigated in this paper.

Summary: Numerous factors affect the
stock-breedingdewvelopment. The stock-feed production, expected to
bothquantilatively and qualitatively fulfill the planned level
ofproduction, is one of the central factors.
Stock-feed production (from 1973 till 1990), exceptthe maiz for
fodder, is in decline. During the analyzed period, hay production decreased
at an average annual rate of 0.76%,leguminous plants at 6.26% etc.
The analysis revealed the feed deficiency on familyfarms, which
is largely the result of the methodological approachto stock taking, as
well as of the basic features of animalproduction in the country (farm
size, cattle number, feedingstructure, etc.)

Summary: Starting point in the study is that the economic
effectiveties ofcattle production directly depends on the economy of
stock-feedproduction. Therefore, the study deals with the economy of
theproduction of maize, barley, oats, wheat, rye, silage maize, potatoes,
meadow and lucerne hay on deliberately chosen familyfarms in Lika and
Middle Croatia.

Summary: This paper presents the basic results of the general
interviewon 725 farms but concentrates on the results of the
threemonographic investigations. Three of the farms investigated werebetter
according to the main farm characteristics than theaverage obtained for the
region. The vineyard production on thesefarms is emphasized since they grow
vineyards on 0.5 ha, or 4.4to 15.4% of their total farming area.
The small farms justified inclusion of vineyard production into
their farming activities by the higher employment of family
members, the higher total income obtained on the farms and the
fact that the farm fixed costs were partly spread out to cover
the vineyard production.

Summary: Croatia, as the part of Mediterranean region (still
globally themost important production and export region) has
numerouscomparative advantages in production of a number of quality sortsof
fruit and vegetables which has not been used as nearly as itcould have been
in earlier trade. Just opposite, from thelong-term net-exporter, during
eighties Croatia has turned intonet-importer of products from the fruit and
vegetable sector. The
future possibilities of Croatian export of fruit and vegetablesare
discussed with regard to increase in covering of importconsumption by
domestic production, and higher efficiency
of exports through supply in tourism (the so called "silent"export).

Summary: The share of the price of wheat (as the basic mill-raw
material)in the average price of mill product is significant. In
theanalysed period (1976-1990) the share of the price of basic rawmaterial
was 72.4% (fco mill) of the price of grinding while theexpenses of mills in
the same period amounted 27.6%
During the analysed period the parity was changing at first atthe expense
and later on to the benefit of mill-products.Therefore, the parity of
prices in 1976 was 1:1.58 and in 1982 itwas only 1:1.16. Since 1982 it is
constantly increasing (to thebenefit of grinding) and in 1990 it was
1:1.97.

Summary: Results of comparative analysis indicate considerably
lowerparticipation fruit and vegetables in the whole agriculturalexport (as
well as participation in agricultural production) inCroatia compared to
other Mediterranean countries. The lack oforganization in domestic market
has caused lagging of thoseproduction sectors and weakening of their
competitiveness inexport. On the other hand, the favorable conditions for
purchaseof fruit and vegetables from import in late 1980s resulted in
theuncontrolled deterioration in the country's balance of payment, and the
record deficit in trade of agricultural products in 1990has mostly affected
this group of products.
