Summary: Besides the general principles of automatic speech
recognitionthe paper deals with approaches to speech recognition based
onthe traditional theory of pattern recognition and machinelearning opposed
to models including phonetic and linguisticaspects. The central part of the
paper is concerned with thedescription of the system for continuous speech
recognition wichshapes tje speech comunication process.

Title: The effects of stress and duration on the frequency of

Summary: The traditional concept of the acoustic vowel space
representedin terms of F1xF2 is made intricate and embroiled by
theexistence of several sources of variability: includingdifferences
between speakers, speech style, etc. The lessinvestigated sources of
variability - articulation tempo andstress have divided the investigators
and provoked contradictoryassumptions. The present investigation based on
specific Croatianstandard speech is trying to find if the duration or
stress ofvowels are "per se" essential in determining the degree
oforganization, i. e. reduction of the vowel timbre.

Summary: Inherent fundamental frequency (IF0) was analyzed on a
speechsample of standard Croatian. The results are mainly in agreementwith
the data reported in fhonetic literature. We cannot agreethat the extent of
IF0 variations depends on the speaker'sregister. In spite of our belief
that IF0 description is a partof the acoustic description of any speech
idiom, the measurmentspresented in this paper reveal no significant
differences in IF0contours as compared to other languages.

Title: The formants of natural and synthesized vowels in Croatian

Summary: The paper is concerned with the results (and problems) of
theacoustic analysis of naturaly pronounced vowels of Croatianstandard
speech as the results of the perception of synthesizedvowels in three
dimensional space F1xF2xF3. Both, the analysisand synthesis have been
carried out by means of digitaltechnique. The results of the perception of
synthesized vowelscorrespond to the results of the acoustic analysis of
naturalvowels. The results that have been obtained underline theimportance
of formants in vowel perception but they also point tothe existance of
alternative mechanisms for the perception of thevowels that are not
neccessarily based on a definite number anddefinite position of formants.

Summary: The place of articulation of voiceless stops is coded
indifferent parts of the acoustic signal. In the VCV context, forexample,
it is coded in the transients of the first and secondvowel and the release
burst. The paper investigates theirrelative impact on the perception of the
place of articulation.Judging by the results of experiments it might be
concluded thatneither part of acoustic continuum containing information
aboutthe place of articulation is sufficient for their identification.

Summary: The paper presents an analysis of perceptual stability
dependingon formant position (F1, F2, F3) and compares recent findings
onvowel normalization to the corpus of synthesized Croatian vowels. The
vowels are analyzed through the light of their spectral andperceptual
volume and density. The obtained results forsynthesized vowels mainly
confirmed published results but therewere some deviations with female and
child vowels.

Title: Automatic recognition of vowels based on formants
normalization
Faculty: Filozofski u Zagrebu
Date of defense: 12/30/91
Language: hrvatski
Number of pages: 265
Summary: This work deals with the automatic vowel recognition based
onformant normalization. The proposed formant normalizationincludes
relationships among F1, F2, and F3 and their dependenceon F0 and vocal
tract shape. In order to achieve complete view ofthese relationships, two
vowel data bases are created. The firstbase consists of 3100 synthetic
vowels and the second includes620 natural vowels. Formants are
simultaneously analyzed inlinear and perceptual Bark - scale. The vowels
are treated in thelight of the source -filter theory of speech production.
Theobtained results are interpreted from the vowel articulationdamain where
it has been found that there coexist alternativecriteria for definition of
vowel space.
