Summary: This article comments on several recent studies about the
etymology of the ethnonym Croat. It especially focuses on the theory of the
Iranian origin of the Croats and their name. The dilettantism of certain
authors is sharply criticized for dealing with linguistic, particularly
onomastic problems without any serious philological grounding. The article
also summarizes the views of other authors concerning the origin of the
name Croat, such as Menges, Kunstmann, Schuster-Šewc, Trubačov, Katičić,
Gluhak etc.

Summary: The author argues against the ever more insistant claims
that the Croats are of Iranian origin or at least related to the Iranians.
The purpose of these claims is to prove that the Croats are one of Europe's
most ancient people. Using linguistic methodology the author shows the many
etymological errors of the arguments in favor of the Iranian theory of
Croat origin.

Summary: The "Iranism" Varoš entered the Croatian language through
Hungarian. This is confirmed by historical, as well as phonetic and lexical
chriteria. Thus the presence of varoš in Croatian does not prove a direct
connection between Croatian and Iranian as it is sometimes claimed. The
word varos is one of numerous Hungarian borrowings from Iranian. It is
derived from the IE root *uer 'close, cover, surround'. In the meaning of
'fortification' it was introduced into Hungarian by Persian merchants from
a northern middle Iranian language. The word varos was for the first time
recorded in Hungarian in the 11th century. It indicated a settlement under
or around a fortification. It was introduced into the Croatian language in
this meaning. Later it became a general term indicating a town. As a
toponym Varoš is recorded in almost the entire Croatian area, and as the
second part of a composit toponym it often appears in Slavonia (Vukovar,
Bjelovar, Daruvar).

Title: On differences between toponyms with the suffix -aj, -aja
and appellatives with etymological suffixes -(j)aj, -(j)aja
- Authors:

Volume: 3
Year: 1994

Number of references: 8
Language: hrvatski
Summary: This article explains the formative differences between
toponyms with the suffixes -(j)aj, -(j)aja. Tomo Maretić equilizes the
suffixes -aj, -jaj in appellatives and toponyms, while Petar Skok lists
four reasons in favor of their distinction. According to Skok appellatives
ending with -aj, -jaj are essentially deverbatives, abstract nouns from
which as a rule toponyms are not derived. In contrast, toponyms ending with
-aj are formed from adjective stems. As final proof in favor of the
difference Skok indicates that in the case of toponyms formed from
adjectival stems with the suffix -aj, the female form ending in -aja is
very common, such as Krivaja, Crnaja, Blagaja, Golaja, Suhaja, Suvaja.

Summary: Croatia still does not have a systematic and complete
toponymic dictionary. Usually toponymy has been studied within the context
of individual dialectal works. But for many regions of Croatia synchronic
toponymic studies are still lacking. Material for the historical toponymic
dictionary of Croatia has been gathered for decades but the linguistic
component has been left out. This article attempts to present the basic
problems faced in composing a historical toponymic dictionary of Croatia
following the example of toponymic dictionaries of other countries.
