Frequently faced with resistance and misunderstanding onthe part of foreign rulers, the Latin clergy and the hierarchy,Glagolitism established itself through several stages of development as asignificant spiritual and social-economic force in a large area of themedieval Croatian territories. It reached its apogee in the 15th century.Apart from the abundant previous literature (liturgical and non-liturgical),this was particularly evident in the organization of theCroatian-Glagolitic printing (editio princeps) of the "Missal" of 1483, printed inKosinj, Senj, Rijeka, about thirty years after Guttenberg's Bible. Afterthe mid-16th century Glagolitism lost its previous importance, for anumber of reasons, but the plebeian Glagolitic priests, as late as in the19th century, remained defenders of the Slavic liturgical language inthe Catholic Church and keepers of the national identity.
