Journal: Slovo
ISSN: 0583-6255
Year: 1991
Pages: from 87 to 125
Number of references: 3
Language: hrvatski
Summary: The interest in Croatian medieval legal documents was
confirmedby A.
Ma'urani with his edition of the text of the "Vinodol Codex" in1843. A
major achievement in this respect is the monumental collectioncompiled by
I. Kukuljevic and entitled "Acta Croatica", Listine hrvatske I(1863). V.
Jagic was the first, in 1867, to draw attention to the fact thatthere are
elements of literary value in the Medieval Glagolitic and westernIllyrian
charters, laws and statutes. In this study a detailed analysis ismade of
the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of the "VinodolCodex" dating
from 1288 and the "Krk Statute" dating from 1388. Specialattention is paid
to the use of the non-periphrastic form of the 3.1. sg.imperative
(sg.pl.), which is characteristic of Croatian Glagolitic texts ofa legal
character or those prescribing things in general (monastic rules,
didascalies, etc.). In the conclusion, there is a description ofthe
diachronic development of the Croatian literary language and itsfunctional
stylistic differentiation from the 11th to the 14th centuries.

Summary: From the time the Glagolitic script and Glagolitism
appeared onCroatian
soil, during the eighties of the 9th century, until the 19thcentury, they
were something recognizable and unique in the cultural history ofthe
Croats. Frequently faced with resistance and misunderstanding onthe part
of foreign rulers, the Latin clergy and the hierarchy,Glagolitism
established itself through several stages of development as asignificant
spiritual and social-economic force in a large area of themedieval
Croatian territories. It reached its apogee in the 15th century.Apart from
the abundant previous literature (liturgical and non-liturgical),this was
particularly evident in the organization of theCroatian-Glagolitic
printing (editio princeps) of the "Missal" of 1483, printed inKosinj,
Senj, Rijeka, about thirty years after Guttenberg's Bible. Afterthe
mid-16th century Glagolitism lost its previous importance, for anumber of
reasons, but the plebeian Glagolitic priests, as late as in the19th
century, remained defenders of the Slavic liturgical language inthe
Catholic Church and keepers of the national identity.
