Summary: The paper deals with the basic characteristics of space in
anarrative text from the viewpoint of literary history. There arethree
strategies of narrative space which make possible itshistorical study: the
world-creating strategy, the pragmaticstrategy and the receptive strategy.
A consideration of each ofthese involves different types of knowledge
(semiotics, thephilosophy of language, semantics, narratology, the theory
ofreading, the history of mentalities), by means of which thestructure of
the narrative space is shown to be the field of apossible answer of
narrative forms.

Summary: The thesis consists of three chapters, a summary and

SPACE deals with the prerequisites for a study ofnarrative space as a

(narratology, thematics, the theory of reading, the semiotics of
literature)and non-literary knowledge (general semiotics, philosophies
oflanguage, theories of history, the history of mentalities), andmaking
possible a more comprehensive analysis of the structure ofspace in a
narrative text from the viewpoint of literary history. The second and third
chapters are an attempt to put into practicethe guidelines set up in the
first chapter in dealing withancient Greek and Roman novels. Thus the
chapter entitled THENARRATIVE SPACE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK ROMANTIC NOVEL
deals withChartion's novel CHAEREAS AND CALLIRHOE (II.1. Publicity
andLegality: Chariton's Narrative Space), AN EPHESIAN TALE byXenophon
