Summary: COUNSELLING WITHIN A COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM TO REFUGEES IN CAMPS Within a comprehensive program of psychological assistance to 2,500 refugees in a camp, counselling has a distinct yet unconventional role. The program operates within an outreach community mental health paradigm. In addition to standard individual counselling approach, because of refugees' reluctance to openly seek help, counselling had to be integrated within other interventions, e.g. emotional and social support to families; social skills development for children; help in structuring leisure time, screening of PTSD cases. Lessons learned from almost four years of experience in delivery of comprehensive direct psychosocial assistance program to refugees were described.

    Language: engleski
Summary: PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT IN A REFUGEE SHELTER IN CROATIA Acknowledging the importance of supportive environment as a mediator between war-related and displacement experience and the psychological functioning of children, the mental health professionals have developed programs which aim at preventing psychological problems among displaced people and refugees. The program described in this article is the oldest program of this kind in Croatia and was initiated in August 1991 when the first refugees came to the city of Zagreb. The model under which the program operates (Ajduković, D., 1993) can be briefly described as a primary mental health prevention program. Its basic assumptions are: (1) multiple sources of stress are present in displacement, (2) stressors have cumulative effect over time, (3) displaced people and refugees are mentally healthy individuals exposed to extremely intensive stressors and are therefore at risk for their mental health, (4) the displaced are not a homogeneous group, but have group-specific and individual needs and coping resources, (5) there are groups and individuals among the displaced who are at exceptionally high risk and need special attention, like children and the elderly, and (6) adequate interventions can help eliminate some sources of stress, reinforce available resources, improve coping skills, and moderate manifestations of stress. A range of intervention activities was described. This project attempted to make the transition and adaptation to the current reality as easy as possible. Hopefully this will help build the refugees' resilience to future stressors which they will inevitably have to meet. The project provided services to the more needed of support, counselling and referral. This is a very slow and trying process, with many ups and downs, but overall the progress towards these goals is evident.

Summary: The level and structure of knowledge on nuclear energy among two groups of subjects of opposed attitudes concerning nuclear power plants and interacting links of the three groups of variables that are considered as most important in establishing human relations to environmental hazards have been studied in this paper: knowledge, attitudes and perceived hazard: 308 subjects of both sex, students of senior academic years from faculties in Zagreb participated in the research: Factulty of Science, Electical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture and Faculty of Philosophy. These subjects were selected because owning to the presumed different knowledge structure levels, as well as attitudes concerning nuclear power-plant. The results have shown that the group with a more positive attitudes concerning nuclear power- plants shows a higher level of knowledge. In other words, they have better knowledge of facts that are in agreement with their attitudes than those not supported by attitudes. Correlation analysis of knowledge, attitudes and perceived hazard has shown that the subjects with the most negative attitudes concerning nuclear power-plant show also poorer knowledge of facts. The correlation between attitudes and hazard perception (r=0.45) indicates subjects with a more prominant hazard perception among those with more negative attitudes. A correlation between knowledge of facts and hazard perception was not found. Implications of results obtained are discussed in the paper.

Summary: Two groups of refugee families participated in the program aimed at preventing chidrens's mental health problems: families who were accommodated either in a shelter or with host families. A considerable range of stress-related reactions among children were identified. Higher incidence of stress reactions was related to mothers' overall poor ability to cope with stress of displacement. Children in the first group were at higher mental health risk than their peers housed with host families.

Summary: The model for delivery of psychosocial assistance to displaced families was conceptualized. A program was developed which identified specific sources of stress and difficulties in psychosocial adaptation and interventions implemented. It was delivered to families who were accommodated either in a refugee shelter or with another family. The uprooted people who end up in refugee centers were assessed to be at higher mental health risk.

    Held: from 07/17/94 to 07/22/94
Summary: DEVELOPMENT OF COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHOSOCIAL PROGRAMS FOR REFUGEES IN CAMPS A comprehensive program of psychosocial support to 2,500 refugees in a camp has been developed over a period of one year. It operates within an outreach primary prevention paradigm with the basic assumptions: (1) refugees are exposed to multiple sources of stress which have cumulative effect, (2) refugees are mentally healthy individuals who have suffered traumatic stress and are therefore at risk for their mental health, (3) refugees have group-specific and individual needs and coping resources; (4) there are groups and individuals who are exceptionally vulnerable and need special attention, (5) interventions can help eliminate some sources of stress, reinforce resources, improve coping skills, and moderate manifestations of stress, and (6) services provided within the camp should integrate with the local social services. Some of the interventions developed are the following: emotional and social support to families; play and social skills development for children; support for children with learning difficulties; helping parents deal with their children's distress; help in structuring leisure time; facilitating mutual support groups; individual counselling; alcohol abuse prevention program; screening and treatment of PTSD cases; group work with depressive women; monitoring and care for psychiatric patients.

Meeting: 23rd International Congress of Applied Psychology. Symposium: Stress and Psychological Adaptation of Refugees
    Held: from 07/17/94 to 07/22/94
Summary: STRESS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ADAPTATION OF REFUGEES Most of the refugees are exposed to traumatizing experiences before fleeing their homes and during the flight. But they endure prolonged stress during their lasting displacement. Their everyday experiences, breakdown of social support, loss of social networks and social status, new cultural environment in which they try to establish new life, all contribute to their feeling of helplessness. This accumulates atop of the earlier traumas thus making refugees a group at high mental health risk. Signs of refugees' distress and deteriorating mental health are evident in areas like problem behavior, disruption of interpersonal and family relations, psychological disfunction, and increased psychosomatic and psychopathological symptomatology. In the symposium data and observations will be presented regarding the extend of traumatic experiences, psychological reactions and adaptation problems of current refugees from the former Yugoslavia. Intervention programs and experiences from several countries where these refugees have found safe heaven will be presented. Programs of providing psychosocial help to refugees in camps will be presented. This will be an opportunity to address the common and culture-specific issues both regarding approaches, working techniques, and caveats of providing psychological services to refugee children, adults and families.

    Held: from 05/07/95 to 05/11/95
Summary: POSTTRAUMATIC AND DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMATOLOGY IN REFUGEES: CORRELATES, PREDICTORS AND CHANGES Posttraumatic reactions and depression among 51 refugee mothers living in a collective center were assessed together with a number of possible predictors. Posttraumatic reactions were tapped using a PTSR scale (Cronbah alpha .89) and the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) (alpha .81). Intrusive reactions, emotional numbing, and psychosomatic reactions were most often reported. The depression level was found to be higher than in a comparable sample of non-refugee women. The predictors included primary appraisals of the threat, secondary appraisal of control over the events, self- assessment of coping, self-competence and external locus of control, family separation, having small children, stress symptomatology in the child, and the interviewer's assessment of exposure to current stressors. Linear regression analysis revealed that the set of predictors could be used to predict both the levels of posttraumatic reactions (R=.72) and the depression (R=.70). Comparison of the PTSR scores over a period of 18 months and SDS scores in 14 months in which follow-up assessments were done several times, clearly indicated that the mental health status of this group of refugees deteriorated while living in displacement. This was more evident among the individuals who seemed to be better adapted at the first assessment period. The highest deterioration was tapped by the PTSR subscale of somatic reactions. The results can be interpreted within the proposed model of psychosocial adaptation in displacement. Key words: refugees, posttraumatic symptomatology, follow-up

Summary: Stress Events Scale is a chek-list containing 26 stress events related to the war. The events were estimated by 30 psychologists involved in psycholosocial support of war victims. The events were estimated following the procedure by Holmes and Rahe (1967). Each item was estimated on the scale from 1 (event is not stressful) to 100 (event is maximaly stressful for person). The average intensity of stressfulness was calculated for every events and events were ranged according to their stressfulness. The scale can be used for the estimation of war stress experienced by war victims.
