Summary: The book presents the findings of the Work Importance
Study, a large-scale, cross-cultural project conducted in Australia,
Belgian Flanders, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Portugal, South Africa,
and the USA. Using a cross-nationaly developed questionnaires, the
researchers explored how values of individuals are expressed in different
life roles. The results support the universality of values and reveal that
the fulfillment of personal potential is a life goal that cuts through the
boundaries of culture, status, and gender.

Summary: The chapter analyses data on values obtained in ten
countries (Australia, Belgian Flanders, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Japan,
Poland, Portugal, South Africa, and the USA). A large amount of data
comprising qestionnaire responses from over 30,000 respondents has been
analysed. The presented findings include factor structure of values across
the countries, value priorities in different countries, and clustering of
countries based on their value similarity.

Summary: The aim of this research was (1) to analyse the factor
structure
of time-sharing performance and (2) to examine the relations of identified
time-sharing factors to cognitive abilities and personality traits. A
factor analysis identified three single-task factors and three time-sharing
factors, supporting the notion of the process-specific time-sharing
abilities. None of the factors correlated with the personality measures.
Two of the time-sharing factors, however, correlated with primary mental
abilities. The findings suggest that speed of information processing may be
a crucial factor in time-sharing performance.

Summary: The inadequacies of the public alarm system are analyzed
and an
improved version has been suggested. The new system contains four alert
signs: general alert, air raid alert, fire alert and end ofalert. The
choice of warning signals for these four situations has been based on the
authors' own research and the practice in other countries.

Summary: The study sought support for the notion of time-sharing
ability by analyzing whether time-sharing and single-task performance
reveals different factor structure and exibits differential relations to
the subjects age. A total of 80 truck drivers, ranging in age from 20 to 61
years, participated in the study. They performed four computerized
reaction-time tasks both singly, one by one, and concurrently, in different
two-task combinations. The analysis of the results proves that the
performance under solitary and time-sharing conditions reveals different
features: (a) in factor analysis they load on separate factors, and (b) in
relation to the subjects age they show a different decline, the
time-sharing performance declining faster. This indicates that time-sharing
performance reveals some reliable individual differences which are not
manifested in the same tasks when performed singly and, thus, supports the
notion of time-sharing ability.

Summary: Psychological evaluation is essential in the assessment of
aptitude for flying. Meeting of the medical standards is a
necessary, but not sufficient, indicator of the "pilot
qualities". The level of flying skill that a pilot can attain
depends largely on his or her cognitive, psychomotor, and
personality traits. As validation studies show, carefully
composed batteries of psychological tests are generally
predictive of future pilot proficiency.

Summary: It is not clear in which direction will new technologies
alter
the work content. Some authors expect further de-skilling, other believe
in some possibilities for job enrichment, and still others claim that new
technologies will polarize the core dimensions of work content. The
outcome will probably depend on the designers' approach. This paper
advocates an "anthropocentric", work-centred approach in work design: it is
a psychological precondition of job satisfaction and intrinsic work
motivation.

Summary: Previous studies have sought support for the notion of
time-sharing ability by analyzing the factor structure of dual-task
performance. However, only the performance at low level of practice has
been measured. This study extends the investigation on the higher levels of
practice. The subjects (N=112) performed computorized reaction-time and
tracking tasks both singly and concurrently. The performance of as many as
30 trials was obtained for each of the tasks. The factor analysis indicated
that factor structure of performance was similar at different levels of
practice.

Summary: The study examines the role of cognitive abilities in the
time-sharing performance of perceptual-motor tasks at different levels of
practice. The subjects (N=112) performed computorized reaction-time and
tracking tasks, both singly and concurrently. As many as 30 trials was
obtained for each of the tasks. The subjects also completed a series of
paper-and-pencil tests comprising nine ability factors. The results reveal
that - both at low and high level of practice - most of the cognitive
abilities, in particular numerical ability and perceptual speed, are
related to the time-sharing factor which accounts for the performance of
the complex choice-reaction tasks.

Summary: Time-sharing or simultaneous performance of several tasks
is typical for complex, high-pressured jobs such as pilots or air-traffic
contollers. Yet the ability assessment in selection for such jobs is
traditionally based on a "serial" approach in which tests are administered
singly. This paper examines the possibilities for a "parallel" approach in
which the assessment tasks are administered concurrently and presents a
battery of computorized time-sharing tests.

Summary: The study examined occupational goals and satisfaction of
Croatian work force in the period of transition and compared responses of
employees in private and state-owned firms. The preliminary data (N=600)
collected during 1993 and 1994 indicated a profound deficiency in need
satisfaction of present day Croatian work force. It was also found that
respondents in private firms perceive better job characteristics and
express more job satisfaction than the respondents from state-owned firms.
