Summary: Congruence of assessments of psychosocial climate between inmatesand prison staff was compared. Inmates assessed the climate asworse than the staff did. The differences were smaller in openand semi-open type of regimes. In two closed-type prisons thesignificant differences were found for social relations, programorientation and the functioning of the penal system. Thesocio-spatial dimensions were assessed similarly, as extremelypoor. Climate as an indicator of potential conflict was confirmedby riots in the closed-type prison in 1991.

Summary: Assessment of psychosocial climate showed significant differencesbetween prisons, which could be only partly attributed todifferences in the regimes between them. The results indicatedthat in developing programs for open and semi-open type ofprisons more was achieved in improving the standard of livingthan in their rehabilitative functions. Poor climate in theclosed-type of institutions clearly indicated considerableexposure to professioanl stress among the prison staff, whichinterferes with the proclaimed resocialization programgoals.

Summary: Prison sentences are critically analysed in the light of negativepsycho-social effects upon inmates, prevention of criminalactivity and costs. Attention was drawn to alternatives whichattempt to reach the same goals as prison sentences, but try toavoid their hindrances. Alternative sanctions within a localcommunity are a good example of these. However, alternativesanctions put forward new demands from courts, probationservices and centers for social work.

  6. Type of paper: Summary in proceedings

Title: Psychosocial clima in Croatian penal institutions - changes over the period of five years
Proceedings title: Zbornik sažetaka, Treĉa godišnja konferencija hrvatskih psihologa
    Language: hrvatski
    Year: 1995
    Pages: from 21 to 21
    Held: from 05/25/95 to 05/17/95
Summary: Psychosocial climate was assessed using the PSK-B scale in 5 Croatian penal institutions. The scale was administered to 475 inmates who were serving the term in one of the prisons in June 1994. The results were used to describe 13 dimensions of the penal climate. The results were compared to to those gathered by administering the same scale in the same facilities five years before. The major change in climate was evident in one open type prison (Lipovica) and one closed type prison (Lepoglava). In both cases the overall climate has decreased in quality. Lepoglava prison was characterized by extremly poor climate during the first assessment which led to major conflicts and incidents. The current decrease in quality of the climate means that the climate in this prison became unbearable and that immediate action is required.
Keywords: psychosocial climate, prisons, penal institutions
