SVIBOR

Concise History of Svibor

COLLECTING DATA

After the decision that data about projects financed by this Ministery should be collected electronicaly, PC/DOS platform was chosen, on the ground of dominance of PC compatible computers in academic institutions in Croatia.

Svibor 1

A programme was made (Clipper Summer '87), and data stored in dBaseIII+ format. Relational database model was used, and users could append menues with cities, people, institutions etc.. On the installation disk one could find default database files, programs and batch files, files for context-sensitive on-line help and startup files. Printed installation information was also available. Database files were supposed to be returned on the same diskette.

Svibor 2

Two separate programms were made (Clipper 5.2) for collecting the final report on projects and published papers - one for the projects and another for the papers. Detail installation and users' guide, as well as new programms were on the diskette, along with the database files from Svibor 1. A bug in the programm for published papers caused some data loss in some cases, and an upgrade diskette was sent to all institutions on the begining of September, 1995. Final versions of programms could also be downloaded from ftp server ftp.mzt.hr.

DATA ACCESS

Svibor 1

Two applications (Clipper 5.2) were available for browsing projects (aprox. 1,500) and published papres (aprox. 32,000). Database files were on network file server, stored in dBaseIII+ format, consuming about 150 MB disk space, available to any PC user with access to file sever to launch the application.
Fragments of data on published papers were prepared for Gopher. Files were indexed and searchable.

Svibor 2

Data files collected with Svibor 2 are converted to htm documents. Croatian character set is presented in Win CP 1250 standard. It is possible to search by keywords mentioned in project or papers, by name, surname or ID number, or by global search.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Svibor 1

PC AT compatible computer with DOS 3.3 or higher, 2 MB free disk space, 1 MB RAM with 500 kb free conventional memory. Configuration files had to be edited (CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT).

Svibor 2

Standard version worked in protected mode, with DOS 3.3 or higher, 3 MB free disk space (or more, depending on the amount of data), 2 MB physical memory, with 250 kB free conventional memory. For users with only 1 MB physical memory, a real mode version was available, but it needed 450 kB free conventional memory. The number of open files (FILES parameter in CONFIG.SYS) was reduced from 70 to 45, and no changes in AUTOEXEC.BAT were required.

User and technical support was provided by The Ministery of Science and Technology, as well as company mikroPROM which produced the program Svibor, designed Svibor Web pages and continues to maintain this database.
