Summary: Electronic, structural and dynamic properties of clean
metallic surfaces and surfaces covered with atomic and molecular
adsorbates, as well as metallic surfaces covered with ultra-thin metallic
films are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical
investigations are focused on the model descriptions of interactions of
electromagnetic radiation and atomic particles with surface excitations,
as encountered in the processes and phenomena of photoemission,
photoabsorption, surface scattering, stimulated desorption etc, and on
the interpretation of the corresponding experiments. Experimental
investigations are concentrated on the determination of the interactions
and electronic and structural properties characteristic of adsorbates
and adsorbed layers on metallic substrates, typical of adsorption of
various gases (oxygen, carbon monoxide, xenon etc.) and metal atoms on
metal surfaces. These studies are carried out by means of electron
spectroscopies (XPS,UPS, LEED, PAX, AES, etc) and thermal desorption
spectroscopy, under UHV conditions.
Research goals: Investigations of structural, electronic and dynamic
properties of metallic surfaces and adsorbates, setting up of microscopic
models for description of the systems investigated.
Better understanding of the
systems and processes investigated through comparison of experimental
results and predictions of theoretical models, extension of the knowledge
obtained to other areas of science and technology.
