Summary: This paper includes main theses, proofs and procedures ofBoundary Element Method (BEM). The computer program announced inliterature, for the calculation of stresses and strains aroundunderground opening was used, comprising plane strain state forelastic continuum. Preprocessor with interactive input andpostprocessor for graphic presentation of the results have beenadded to the program. In the main program the influences ofvarious support systems for underground rooms were added, especially shotcrete layers, shotcrete layers reinforced by wirenetting, steel arches and passive and prestressed bolts. Thisnumerical method has been under current development, especiallyfor materials with nonlinear behaviour. The method is faster thanother numerical methods and represents an efficientsupplementation to them.

Summary: The data from the engineering geological measurments have to be adequate prepared for later use in the computer programs for examination of the underground rooms stability. The onlz mean values of the dip direction and dip angles are not relevant for later calculations, but rather the statistically defined area containing chosen percentage of the collected data. The main conclusions of the block theory are accepted for visual presentation of the relation between the rooms cross-sections and the planes of discontinuities so that the position and shape of critical (key) blocks can be easy recognized. The roof falls and side sidings volumes have to be filled in the site with the expensive concrete, so the avoiding of falls is achallenge to the theory and tunnelling practice. The program based on the boundary elements is adapted so that it can calculate the failure criteria on the planes of weakness and compare this with the failure criteria through in the rock itself. The area with critical security factor will be displayed and so the numerically possible rock and block failure recognized.

Summary: Boundary element method (BEM) is relatively new numerical methodfor solving the stress and strain distribution in the continuummechanics. The method is based on the solution for infiniteelastic continuum loaded with locally concentrated force or bythe load distributed on the finite area. The method is acceptablein the defining input data, because it is necessary to give onlythe condition of loads and deformations on the geometricallygiven contours. The number of input data for BEM is incomparably less than the number of input data for FEM. One of the exampleswhere the BEM is useful is the computation of the stresses andstrains around the openings of underground rooms for the elasticcontinuum loaded with the forces of the own weight of the massif. The effect of primary support (shotcrete layers, arches, bolts)on the stresses and strains around the opening has been included.Hoek-Browns failure criteria was used.

Summary: The existing types of available wind energy converters (WEC) haveto be shut off when the wind velocity reaches 18-20 m/s, and aretherefore not convenient to the characteristics of the so called"bura" (borra), which is the prevailing wind type in the Croatiancoast area. A new type of WEC with vertical axes is proposed, asit excludes the change of the direction of the rotation axis dueto the sudden wind direction variations. The turbine has nomovable parts on its rotor, so it can function even by extremewind velocities, since the angular velocities as well as thecentrifugal forces remain acceptable. The fundamental experimentson the drag coefficients in a wind tunnel have been performed, aswell as a part of theoretical and numerical analyses. Therelatively low theoretical power coefficient of the turbine willbe compensated by low installation cost.

Summary: The basic loading of the massif are the forces of the own weight or horizontal and vertical pressures. The Hoek-Brown's programme for the elastic continuum for plane strain was accepted. The computation of the stresses and strains around the openings of underground rooms can be carried out by Boundary Element Method. The Hoek-Brown's program was extended by the effects of primary support on the stresses and strains around the opening, so that it accepts the loading with reactive forces of the support (shotcrete layers with or without wire mesh and steel arches) and with active and reactive forces of bolts. Analogously to the treatment of reinforced concrete, the ultimate bearing capacity of the concrete and steel are considered. The control of failure according to the criterion defined by Hoek and Brown is inbuilt in the programme. The program enables a simple inspection into the problem of stress concentration around the openings and into the influence of different support systems.

Summary: The computation of the stresses and strains around the openings of underground rooms can be carried out by Boundary Element Method. We made the program, which enables a simple inspection into the problem of the stress concentration around the openings and into the influence of different support systems, at the basis of the Hoek-Brown's programme for the elastic continuum for plane strain. The control of failure according to the criterion defined by Hoek and Brown is in-built in the programme. The program is extended by the pre-processor for interactive defining of the input data, as well as by post-processor for graphic presentation pf results. Because of the speed of calculation by the application of BEM and the simplicity of input data changes it is possible to analyse a number of different cases of loading in a very short time as well as to observe the influence of input parametars of the massif.

Summary: The preliminary geological data define the geometrical characteristics of the planes of fault and joints system in thr rock. This data will be supplementary monitired on the building sites every day. The Block theory makes it possible to graphically and analitacally representation the relations between the exisitng planes of discontinuities and tunnel cross - and longitudinal-section. The forms of the critical, so called key blocks, can be determined, but without taking account of the real confining stresses existing around the uderground rooms. Our original computer program gives the graphical representation of key block in an approximative stress field, whereby the safety factor on the planes of discontinuities and through intact rock itself will be compered. So, the more realistic forms of failures can be obtained. Since the definition of the rock and discontinuities properties require a considerable number of physical constans, a rough approximation in the proposed form is acceptable.

Summary: The study describes the human mandible Bz 33d from Bezdenjačacave in Lika (Croatia). According to radiocarbon dating theabsolute age of the mandible is between 1401 and 279 years B.C.It belonged to a man 40-60 years old. The specific characteristicof described bone is the mandibular angle Its form differs fromrecent mandibles as well as from the mandibular angle found inHomo Sapiens Neanderthalensis. It is in a form of curve so thatthe attachment of the masseter muscle is not marked. Theintersection of medial pterygoid muscle is shifted vertically onthe ramus. The zygomatic arch was very thin (it is damaged). Isthe form of the angle due to the masseter muscle hypoplasia? Thebiomechanic of the mandible Bz 33d is discussed using vectorforce analysis.

Summary: Two methods of the transport of the pollution in saturated porousmedia are analyzed: finite element method and random walk method.Computer programs are made for both methods. The programs arewritten in MS Fortran 5.0 and installed on PC AT. Programssimulate a transport of tracer in stationary plane flow ofgroundwater. It is understood that the process of the flow isresolved prior to the transport and it is necessary to know thepiezometer head in the proper points of the region.
