Summary: Response of the Adriatic shelf waters to dominant winter winds is analysed in the paper. There are two such winds: bora is cold, katabatic wind blowing from the northeast, whereas sirocco blows from the southeast bringing warmMediterranean air. Currents and sea-level changes, caused by momentum exchange at the air-sea interface, aresimulated using a three-dimensional numerical model. Numericalpredictions are verified through comparison with data collectedin the area. It is shown that bora induces a rather complexresponse of the Adriatic Sea, with sea levels organized inseveral lows and highs, and current field dominated by wind-curleffect. The currents are directed downwind under the boramaxima, upwind under the minima. Simulations of thebora-driven sea levels and currents are supported by results ofin situ measurements carried out on the Adriatic shelf. Moreover, they are confirmed by an analysis of the Coastal ZoneColor Scanner imagery, showing that during the bora episodes highly-productive Po-influenced waters extend from the river mouth in an offshore direction, due to advection by upwindcurrents. Sirocco piles up water in the North Adriatic and bringsabout the occurrence of storm surges along the northern shores. The process has been amply documented in the literature. According to the present model, the sirocco-driven currentsare controlled by two different mechanisms: bottom slopesupports the existence of a cyclonic and an anticyclonic gyre inthe sea, whereas wind curl is a source of cyclonic vorticity in the basin. The data show that sirocco may reverse the current usually found along the western coast, when wind-forced current component becomes stronger than buoyancy-drivenresidual flow.

Summary: The purpose of present paper is to probe further previously observed dichotomy in the Adriatic waters influenced by the Po River. To that end an existing algorithm for pigmentconcentration retrieval has been improved and applied toreprocess selected summer 1981 and winter 1981/82 images of the Adriatic Sea. The sensitivity loss correction procedurehas been included in the retrieval algorithm and made coherentwith the atmospheric correction model. The model was alsoupdated to allow for multiple Rayleigh scattering, and site specific calibrated for the Case 2 waters of theNorthern Adriatic. Our analysis of the images reinforces previous finding (Clement et al., 1987) that two types of CZCS-derived patterns can be observed on the Adriatic shelf: one, elongated, trapped alongthe Italian coastline, and another wide, irregularly spread into the basin interior. However, according to our results, thetwo patterns are not seasonally restricted, i.e. both may occurin summer and in winter. In summer, when the Northern Adriatic is stratified, the Po-influenced waters spread at the surface into the basin interior. A lower Po discharge may restrain theriver affected waters to a narrow coastal band. In winter, whenthe Northern Adriatic is well mixed along the vertical, theriver-affected waters remain confined to the Italian coastalstrip all the way down the shelf edge and into the Southern Adriatic. However, strong episodes of spatially heterogeneous bura wind can provoke intrusions into the basin interior.

Summary: This is the first attempt to test the results of wind induced current modelling for the Northern Adriatic (Kuzmić, and Orlić, 1987) using spaceborne Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS) data. In particular, new, remotely sensed, empirical evidence has been sought for the previously studied effect of spatially heterogeneous bura (gusty, katabatic wind of NE direction) by observing changes in spectral reflectance of the Northern Adriatic waters. To that end an existing hydrodynamical model has been extended to include a simple two-dimensional random walk dispersion model. The CZCS measured radiance has been processed to estimate pigment concentration. Remotely sensed data corroborate mathematical model findings. Comparison of model- generated and sensor-collected information strongly suggests that bura-induced gyre is the mechanism responsible for particular spatial pattern change observed in the CZCS detected radiance and estimated pigment concentration.
