Summary: This project is envisaged as a contribution to the
understanding of the barotropic and baroclinic dynamics on the Adriatic
shelf in general and in selected regions along the Croatian coast
in particular. There are 2 major characteristics of the project: it is
founded on relevant previous investigations of the Adriatic Sea, our own
as well as of other researchers, and on balanced use of theory, empirical
data (in situ and remotely sensed) and computer simulations. The research
has been organizedin 2 major parts. The first has covered short-period
motions, i.e. wind-induced currents, free and forced oscillations,
andinertial oscillations. The second dealt with lower-frequency motions,
i.e. spatial and temporal variability of thetemperature and salinity
of the water column in the northern Adriatic, and current variability
at the scale of about 10 days. Empirical part has been based on
existing, partly analysed data, as well as on those collected within the
project. Established connections with some international institutions have
been used to provide remote sensing data. Computer simulations provided
dynamic sintheses of theoretical and empirical findings.
Research goals: The goal of the proposed research is to study
selected aspects of the barotropic and baroclinic dynamics of the
Adriatic Sea and its marginal basins and areas. Selected segments have
been organized into 2 thematic units. The first covers research in
domain of shorter-period motions, triggered by mechanical influence of
the atmosphere on the sea (air pressure and wind). Expected contribution
is better understanding of the wind-induced dynamics on the Adriatic shelf
and in the marginal areas (manifested through oscillations of sea level
and variations in current field). The research should also contribute to
improved knowledge of the mechanism of vertical eddy diffusion and the
sea response to heterogeneous wind forcing (sirocco, bora). Also
expected is better understanding of forced oscillations (due to slower
atmospheric changes) and free oscillations (due to faster atmospheric
changes) of the whole Adriatic and its smaller basins. The shallowness
of the shelf and marginal basins also warrants the attention to the
mechanisms of bottom friction and damping. The second thematic unit
covers lower-frequency motions, directly affected by the exchange
processes at the sea-atmosphere interface (as well as by redistribution of
heat and salt in the sea) and indirectly by the wind. Specific
contribution of this part is expected through improved knowledge and
understanding of the spatial and temporal variability of residual
motions, and some insight into the mesoscale dynamics of the northern
Adriatic. Working towards these goals would enlarge our fundamental
knowledge of the physical oceanography of the Adriatic Sea, and thereby
enhance the possibility of its application.
