Summary: The explanations of conductivity for typical conducting polymers:polyacetylene, polypyrrole and polyaniline are presented. Theorigin and the meaning of the soliton, polaron and bipolaron asstates of energy and as species which are responsible forconductivity is elaborated. The connection between the moleculestructure of a conducting polymer and the type of conductivityhas been pointed out, as well as the role of doping in achievingconductivity up to metal level. A brief review of the methods ofsynthesis is given for typical conducting polymers connested withthe oxidation and doping process. Summary: The attention has been payed to the influence of the supportingelectrolyte anions on the initiation reaction of theelectrochemical polymerization of aniline under cyclovoltammetricconditiins. It has been established that aniline oxidationcurrent increases in the order: ClO4- < NO3- < Cl- < HSO4- andthe anodic current of voltammetric peaks is complicated by theadsorption effects. The pH effect on the aniline oxidationpotentials has also been established.

Summary: The initial stages of polyaniline (PANI) film formation in theelectrochemical synthesis has been studied under potential stepconditions in different supporting electrolytes (H2SO4, HCl,HNO3, HClO4) and for different monomer concentrations. The resulting current-time tranzients have been analysed showingtwo discernable stages of the film growth. SEM images taken atthe times characteristic of the first and the second stage showthat during the first stage (t1) a compact layer has been formed, and during the second stage (t2) SEM images show clearly nucleigrown on a compact layer. The influence of the anion present isobserved not only on the current-time transients, but also on theshape of nuclei.

Summary: The investigations are directed on the initial reaction inpolymerization of aniline. The measurements are carried out undercyclovoltammteric conditions, at two concentrations of anilineand for supporting electrolytes containing different anions (Cl-,ClO4-, HSO4-, NO3-) in the pH region 0-12. It has beenestablished that oxidation reaction of aniline in acidic mediumproceed within the whole pH region, and that the rate ofoxidation and polymerization depend on anion present.

Theinfluence of time and molar ratio of oxidant/pyrrol on the yieldof polypyrrole has been examined, as well as the influence ofpolymerization temperature on the conductivity of the resultingpolypyrrole. It has been established that besides the temperature ofpolymerization the ratio of pyrrole/oxidant influences theconductivity of polypyrrole.

Summary: The influence of different experimental parametra on thenucleation process as well as on the growth and characteristcs ofpolyaniline (PANI) layer has been investigated by potential stepmethod in different supporting electrolytes. The results obtained for the layers examined by SEM at differentstages, show that the electrochemcal polymerization of anilineconsists of two stages. First stage is the appearance and growthof nuclei, and the second one is the growth of already formedPANI layer. Process of electropolymerization depends strongly onexperimental conditions. The differences obtained in current-timetransients as well as in the electrochemical behaviour of PANIare explained by twodimensional (2D) and threedimensional (3D)nucleation process.

Summary: The appearace and the characteristics of the middle peak in thefirst scan of voltammograms depending on switching potential andscan rate has been followed. The characteristics of the middlepeak during 10 cycles of synthesis have been examined. It hasbeen found that the middle peak disappears after the leaching outin the supporting electrolyte. The leached out product examinedthereafter gives a pairs of peaks corresponding to the middlepeak. The middle peak is attributed to the p-aminodiphenil-amine,a side product in the synthesis and in a degradation ofpolyaniline.

Summary: The electrochemical synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) has beencarried out under cyclovoltammetric conditions in aqeous solutionof following electrolytes: H2SO4, HCl, HNO3 and HClO4. Themorphology of the obtained PANI layers has been examined byscanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the conductivity has beendetermined by four probe method. It has been found that the morphology of PANI layer dependssignificantly on the anion present. PANI synthesized from thesolution of oxyacids results in a sponge-like structure, whilePANI from hydrochloric acid results in more orderly structurewith discernable fibres. The morphology of the deposit influencesstrongly the electrical conductivity.

Summary: A layer of PANI is electrochemicaly deposited on Pt electrode by use of cyclic voltammetry and potential step methods. PANI layers of different thickness were obtained from aniline solutions, Can=0.1M, using H2SO4 and HClO4 supporting electrolytes. The electrocatalytic activity of PANI layers was examined by cyclic votammetry for the following systems, quinone/hydroquinone, Fe2+/Fe3+ and Fe(CN)64-/Fe(CN)63-. The results obtained on PANI electrode indicate the catalytic activity of the PANI substrate which is demonstrated in increased reversibility of the systems examined. The electrocatalytic activity of PANI layer depends also on the electrolyte used in the synthesis of PANI. Under the same exp. conditions, PANISO4 exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity than PANIClO4. The difference in electrocatalytic activity is attributed to the difference in their morphology and the influence of the anion present.
