Summary: The complexing of the azomethine dye
2-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenol (PMAP) with Mn(II) in solution has been
investigated. The synthesis of an Mn(II)-PMAP complex is described,
together with its characerization by UV/VIS (using a self-interfaced
computerized system) spectrometry. Dyeing properties of Mn(II)-PMAP complex
for wool and nylon 6.6 fabrics have been investigated, together with the
possible use of PMAP as a spectrophotometric reagent for sensoring of
Mn(II) ion.

Summary: By computerized potentiometric method of corresponding
solutions it was shown that potassium ion with 18-crown-6 ligand is
forming consecutive complexes (ML and sanwich type ML2) which was so far
known only for smaller-ring crown ligands. Complexes of sodium and amonium
ions with the same ligand are of simple 1:1 stoichiometry. It is outlined
that one should be very cautious taking single species model as the only
possible one into account because erroneous results and conclusion can in
some instances be obtained.

Summary: The solution properties of
4-(2-pyridylmethylene)-amino-1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone (PPP) and
4-(2-quinolylmethyleneamino)-1-phenyl-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone (QPP) and their
complexes with copper and nickel were investigated. The composition and
stability of the complexes have been determined using the
spectrophotometric method at 25 +- 1 oC, constant ionic strength (0.5 M
adjusted with KNO3) and a volume ratio of methanol/water of 10 and 16 % for
PPP and QPP, respectively, due to lower water solubility of QPP. The
experimental results have been fitted to the theoretical equations using
the computerized iterative method of successive approximations. The
influence of pH and addition of anothe benzene ring to the ligand molecule
has been studied. The structure of isolated solid metal complexes with QPP
were investigated by IR and mass spectrometry. The use of PPP and QPP as
analytical reagents for spectrophotometric sensoring of copper and nickel
is discussed.

Summary: An efficient and simple resolution method based on signals
ratio in time domain is proposed for differential pulse polarography (DPP)
and related techniques. The ratio pseudo-DPP are obtained dividing the
multianalyte DP polarogram with individual DPP of a single analyte. Using
the same procedure for DPP recorded for calibration diagrams and for DPP of
unknown binarz mixtures, well resolved ratio pseudo-DPP are obtained. The
method is applied to the binary system of lead and thallium, having
approximately 70 mV of DPP peaks separation showing considerable
overlapping depending of the medium used and on concentratio ratio od the
two components. The method proposed is able to resolve lead from at least
40-fold excess of thallium, and thallium from at least 20-fold excess of
lead at micromolar concentration range with reproducibility better than 5%.

Summary: A lipophilic dye is used as a silver-sensitive
chromo-ionophore within plasticized PVC membrane. The sensing scheme is
based on a cation-exchange mechanism; silver ions from the aqueous phase
are extracted into the organic phase and complexed by the acridine dye. As
a result of complexation, a proton of the dye molecule is released from
the membrane into the aqueous phase, in order to maintain
electroneutrality. The protonated form of the dye and the silver complex
show different absorbance maxima which are at 680 and 520 nm, respectively.
The signal is detected as a change in absorbance at 680 nm. The response is
fully reversible and, due to high lipophilicity of the dye, very stable.
The measured absorbance response shows a good correlation with
theoretically derived model based on an ion-exchange mechanism. Dynamic
range, detection limits, selectivity, response time, short-term
repeatability, as well as liftime, are presented in details.

Summary: An optical single shot test for Cu(II) ions is presented.
The membrane consists of a polyester support and an active layer composed
of hydrogel, a hydrolytic plasticizer and Zincon. The latter has been made
lipophilic bz ion-pairing with tetraoctyl-ammonium bromide. The membrane
responds to Cu(II) ions in giving a color change from pink to blue. Because
the lazer irreversibly extracts copper from the solution, a kinetic
approach has been used for quantitation which consisted in measuring the
slope od the absorbace with time after the membrane has been exposed for 2
min to the analzsed solution. A linear calibration graph has been obtained
for the 63.5 ppm - 6.35 promil of copper. The complexed form of the dye
exhibits an absorbance maximum at 620 nm, which matches with the emission
band of the orange LED. Measurements have been performed at pH=6, because
no complexation of zinc occurs in this range. The long term stabilitz of
the membrane exceeds 6 month when stored drz and in the dark. The strong
binding of Cu(II) ions along with the fairly high selectivity of the
membrane also suggests its use as a preconcentration phase.

Summary: Multivariate curve resolution is applied to the study of
Zn(II) complexation with anions of polymethacrylic and polyacrylic acids in
aqueous solution containing 0.01 M KNO3. Data matrices obtained by
differrent electrochemical techniques (normal pulse polarography, reverse
pulse polarography, differential pulse polarography and differential pulse
anodic stripping voltammetry) and for different ligand deprotonation
degrees have been analysed individually and simultaneously by a procedure
which consists of using several chemometrical techniques based on factor
analysis: principal component analysis, evolving factor analysis and
multivariate curve resolution with alternating least-squares optimization.
These techniques were used to investigate the number of species present in
the system, their concentration profiles at increasing ligand concentration
and their individual voltammograms together with the global (apparent)
stability constants and the ratio od diffusion coefficients of the
individual species. The comparison of the results obtained by soft (model
free) and hard (model postulated a priori) modelling for the system
investigated is discussed.

Summary: Two spectrophotometric and two electrochemical methods for
monitoring of pyrocatechol indoor air pollution have been developed.
Spectrophotometrically pyrocatechol was monitored by the methods of Fe(III)
and iodine, while electrochemically differential pulse voltammetry on
carbon paste electrode was used together with chronoamperometrical
monitoring in flow injection mode.
The efficiency of pyrocatechol collection during sampling was investigated
in water and 0.1 M solution of NaOH and 0,1 M solution of HCl. The later
solution has showed the best collection efficiency (between 95.5 and 98.5
%).
The methods have been tested for pyrocatechol monitoring in the air of
working premises where the meteorological charts have been mapped on a
paper impregnated with pyrocatechol. It was found that in the air of these
premises the concentration of pyrocatechol is 1.8 mg/m3, which is for an
order of magnitude below the hygienic standard of permissible exposure.
