Summary: Development and applications of chemical sensors is one of the most interdisciplinary research field. It combines the knowledge of chemistry, physics and biology (fisical chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics) with knowledge of matematical and statistical (chemometrical) methods and with engineering, technical and technological production. In this project chemical reactions have been investigated of potential interests for electrochemical and optochemical sensoring. Chemometrical methods for sensoring signals evaluation and deconvolutions have been developed. Principles of computerized sensoring measurements have also been investigated. Techologies for productions of some dozen ion selective electrodes have been developed, and using their modification the analyte range can be extended and/or selectivity and sensitivity can be improved.

Research goals: The goals of the investigation in this project are more ambitious then is the financial support given: 1. Updating of the hardware and software for computerized systems developed within the frame of the project research in the past period. 2. Hardware and software development of the computerized hyphenated techniques, e.g. electrochemical-spectrometric-chromatographic. 3. Development of voltammetric and amperometric sensors (global and specific) for determination of different ionic and molecular species. 4. Special attention will be payed in sensors and instrumentation miniaturization envisaging in the future a single chip sensig unit. 5. Development of the technology for membrane production in order to investigate the properties of different ionophores and membrane modifications. Investigation of microlide antibiotics and their ionophoric properties (cooperation with dr. S. Mutak from "Pliva" Zagreb, started at the end of 1993). 6. Specialize in the field of biochemistry and biochemical engineering in order to develop biosensors for monitoring of the environment (air, water, soil), food and oder biochemical productions. Cooperation with Prof. dr. N. Košarić. J. Velikonja decided not to return from Canada! 7. Cooperation with Prof. dr. O Wolfbeis in the field of optochemical sensing (Started at the end of 1993. with Ivana Murković doing her Ph.D. thesis.). 8. Development and application of chemometrical techniques on electrochemical data. Cooperation with Prof.dr. M. Esteban and Prof.dr. R. Tauler started at the end of 1993 with Prof.dr. B.S. Grabarić as visiting profesor in University of Barcelona. 9. To form a nucleus of young investigators on chemical sensing in order to promote in the future a Croatian Center for Development and Applications of Chemical Sensors.
