Summary: The time evolution of subexcitation electron degradation spectrain N2-O2 mixtures has been investigated by using thetime-dependent Spencer-Fano equation. The calculations wereperformed for low-energy electrons whose energies fall below 6eV. The present study showed that strong resonances invibrational excitation channels in N2 and O2 greatly affect thespectrum at early times, and that the stationary spectrum is morereadily achieved in energy regions with a large stopping power. The evolution of the characteristic features of spectra of pureN2 and O2 and their presence to various degrees in mixtures arealso discussed.

Summary: Data on statistical fluctuations of ionization yield, or the Fanofactor, for electrons in gas mixtures are systematized. Empiricalresults indicate that the Fano factor for electrons in a regularmixture can be represented by the Fano factors for the purecomponents, taking into account total ionization cross sectionsof individual components. Good agreement between the calculated Fvalues and the experimental or theoretical Fano factors isobtained for binary regular mixtures, while the differencebetween the measured Fano factor and the calculated one is about10% for tissue-equivalent gas mixtures.

Summary: The moderation of subexcitation electrons in H2 and D2 isinvestigated by using the Spencer-Fano (SF) equation and thecontinuous-slowing-down approximation (CSDA). Throughout, wefocus on isotope effect, i.e., differences between H2 and D2, andconsider electrons at energies appreciably higher than thermalenergy. In summary, because vibrational and rotational excitationchannels have lower thresholds in D2, subexcitation-electronbehavior in D2 at energies below 0.6 eV shows differentcharacteristics from that in H2. The moderation rate in H2 islarger than that in D2 by a factor of about 1.7. This differenceis close to but not exactly the factor of 2 expected from anelementary estimate.

Summary: The mean energy required to form an ion pair for 5.89-keV and1.49-keV photons in argon-methane and argon-butane gas mixtureswas measured using the proportional counter technique. Themeasured W values in the mixtures are lower than what is expectedfor regular mixtures, i.e., mixtures without an appreciableintermolecular energy transfer between the mixture components. The additional ionization yield through the nonmetastable Penningprocesses reaches a maximum abruptly at very low partialpressures of polyatomic admixtures (alkanes), decreasing steadilywith higher admixture partial pressure.

Summary: Our recent measurements of W values in hydrocarbon gases revealednonsmooth, oscillatory variation of the W value for low-energyelectrons as a function of the number of carbon atoms in normalalkanes. This behavior is contrary to what has been expectedgenerally and prompted us to undertake the present theoreticalstudy. Calculations were carried out using thecontinuous-slowing-down approximation for the degradationspectrum, the binary-encounter theory for cross sections, andrelevant molecular properties, to explain the behavior of the Wvalue. The main contributor to the oscilllatory variation is thebranching ratio for neutral dissociation to ionization ofsuper-excited states. We also present an interpretation of thetrend of the W value in the series C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6.

Summary: A nearly linear relation between the Fano factor and the ratioW/I, where W is the mean energy required to form an ion pair in agas, is semi-empirically found for high-energy electrons.Deviations from the linear relation are observed for very lowincident energies. The relation F=a(W/I)+b is tested on severalexamples. The proposed relation may be used to estimate the Fanofactor for gases and gas mixtures for which only the W value isknown.

Summary: Electron-degradation spectra, ionization yields, and the Fanofactors for Ar-H2 gaseous mixtures are rigorously studied usingthe Spencer-Fano theory along with a realistic set of electroncollision cross sections. The study elucidates the relationbetween the Fano factor and ionization cross sections andindicates principles underlying statistical fluctuations of theionization yield. Our results show a smooth compositiondependence of the Fano factor for a mixture. The study reveales aclose connection between the Fano factor and the magnitude andenergy dependence of the ionization cross section. A closecorrelation between the W value and the Fano factor in thespecific case of an Ar-H2 mixture is obtained.

Summary: We have reconstructed the initial activity of calcareoussediments by 1) measuring the C-14 activity of recentpre-bomb-test calcareous deposits, 2) calculating the ratio ofthe C-14 activity of the calcareous sediment to that of theadjacent coeval wood, and 3) extrapolating C-14 activity of thedeep lacustrine sediment layers to the surface, assuming aconstant sedimentation rate. We show here that the uppermostsediment is affected by the global increase of atmospheric C-14activity due to thermonuclear bomb tests in the early 1960s. C-14activity of submerged aquatic plants showed values similar toC-14 activity of DIC (Dissolved Inorganic Carbon). Thus, organicresidue of the sediment cannot be used for reliable C-14 datingbecause of the unknown fraction of aquatic plant detritus. Theinitial activity obtained in a case study of the geochronology ofcarbonates in the Plitvice Lakes area, ranged from 70.5 to 72.2pMC for Lake Prošće sediment, and from 75.9 to 76.7 pMC for LakeKozjak sediment. These values also agree with calculated valuesbased on the downstream increase of C-14 activity of DIC infreshwater open to the atmosphere.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities that introduce an excess of nutrientsand other pollutants into rivers and lakes are causingsignificant changes in their aquatic environment. Excessivenutrients greatly accelerate eutrophication, and lake marl formedduring eutrophication differs from that formed in oligotrophicwater. We analyzed recent sediment cores from Prošće and Kozjak lakeslocated in Plitvice National Park, central Croatia. Analysesconsisted of C-14 activity of calcareous lake marl, the ratio ofstable isotopes (delta C-13, delta O-18), organic compounds inthe sediment and the distribution of diatoms. Previous C-14activity measurements helped to determine the sedimentation rateand thus the time period of increased input of nutrients intolakes. We determined the increased C-14 activity in lakesediments caused by nuclear bomb effect in recent depth profiles. We attributed the sudden increase in diatom species, Cyclotellaoperculata unipunctata and Achnantes clevei rostrata, in theuppermost 5-cm layer, to eutrophication of the lake water. We performed a molecular characterization of hydrocarbonsisolated from the sediment, and applied computer-assistedhigh-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to estimatecontributions of biogenic, fossil and pyrolytic hydrocarbons.

Summary: The isotope content, including radioactive isotope C-14, of theorganic matter of an individual tree ring reflects environmentalradioactivity of the year of its growth at a given area.Tree-ring analyses were widely introduced for reconstruction ofC-14 activity in the atmosphere. For our C-14 analyses we usedfifty years old fir tree from Plitvice National Park. Onlycellulose from individual tree rings was used, because this isthe most reliable chemical constituent of the wood. C-14 activities of tree rings shows an excellent agreement withthe C-14 activities of tree rings from a spruce tree felled atMatra region, Hungary, and of tree rings from a linden treefelled at Krško region, Slovenia. Comparison with atmosphericC-14 concentration in atmospheric CO2 in the Northern Hemisphereshows also very good agreement.

Summary: Tritium concentration in precipitation at Zagreb, Ljubljana(Slovenia), Rijeka and Plitvice for the period 1981-1991 ispresented in this work. Yearly mean values of both Zagreb andLjubljana precipitation follow a global decreasing trend of theyearly mean values at the northern hemisphere. Seasonalvariations at Zagreb, Ljubljana and Plitvice are similar to thoseat other continental stations from the temperate zone of thenorthern hemishere. Tritium concentration in atmospheric water vapor has beenmeasured since 1988 at several sampling points in Zagreb area.Increased tritium concentration in atmospheric water vapor atcertain sites indicates local contamination due to local sourcesof tritium.

Summary: Analysis of existing experimental and theoretical values of W(mean energy required to form an ion pair) and the Fano factor(F) for electrons in various gases and gas mixtures resulted in asimple relation between the ratio W/I (I is the first ionizationpotential of a gas) and F: F = a(W/I) + b. The relation holds forelectron energies higher than 50 eV. The relation is successfullytested on several examples, and it may be used as a practicalguide for estimation of the Fano factor in gases or gas mixturesfor which only W values are known.

Summary: The yearly and seasonal variations of tritium concentration inmonthly precipitation at continental stations Zagreb, Plitviceand Ljubljana follow the Mid-European pattern, having the highestvalues at Ljubljana. Tritium concentration in precipitation atRijeka at the north Adriatic coast is closely correlated withthat at Genoa station. The 12 year record showed a goodcorrelation between Zagreb and Vienna-Hohe Warte stations whichhelped reconstructing the past tritium concentration inprecipitation over Croatia. An increase in tritium concentrationin precipitation collected after the Chernobyl accident wasrecorded for a short period of time between 2 - 7 May 1986. Noimpact on the monthly mean value for May 1986 was observed.Tritium concentration in atmospheric water vapour in city ofZagreb closely follows that in precipitation. On site of theRudjer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, tritium concentration in airmoisture exceeds several times that at other sampling points.

Precipitation samples were also collected atPlitvice National Park, Central Croatia, and at Rijeka, theNorth Adriatic. The decrease of yearly mean values and seasonalvariations at the continental stations follow the Mid-Europeanpattern. Tritium concentration in atmospheric water vapor atseveral sampling points in Zagreb has been measuredsystematically since 1988. Tritium concentration in air moistureis slightly higher that that in precipitation and depends on thesampling site. Tritium in precipitation reflects global changesin the atmosphere while tritium in atmospheric water vapor ismore influenced by local contamination.

Summary: Measurements of C-14 and H-3 in fir tree-rings grown in Plitvicearea, C. Croatia, were used for reconstruction of the isotopeconcentration in a "clean-air" area for last three decades.Cellulose was prepared from separated tree rings and thencombusted for C-14 analysis. The distribution of C-14 activityin tree rings for period 1960-1986 is compared with theglobal-scale distribution of atmospheric C-14 and with dataobtained from spruce tree grown in Matra, N. Hungary. A goodagreement among all these activities has been observed. The exchangeable tritium was removed from cellulose. Tritiumactivity of water produced by combustion of cellulose fromseparate tree rings was measured and compared to that inprecipitation and in wines. The possible reasons for increasedtritium activity obtained for the period 1975-1986 are discussed.

Summary: The origin of geothermal water from several hot springs innorthwest Croatia and east Slovenia has been investigated byisotopic analyses. Two contradicting hypotheses on the origin ofgeothermal water were postulated (meteoric vs volcanic), bothbased on previous geological studies and physico-chemicalmeasurements of geothermal waters. This work is aimed at solvingthe problem of the origin of geothermal water in the investigatedregion. We measured the physico-chemical properties of geothermal waters(t, pH, conductivity, alkalinity, concentrations of various ions, dissolved CO2 and O2) as well as the concentration of radioactiveand stable isotopes. We also analyzed calcareous deposits fromhot springs at Varaždinske toplice spa, where the process ofcalcium carbonate precipitation is very pronounced. The resultsof measurements at Varaždinske toplice spa indicate a meteoricorigin of this geothermal spring. A comparison of our analyses with chemical and isotopic analysesof geothermal waters in the USA (Mammoth Hot Springs and PagosaSprings) is presented.

Summary: The initial C-14 activity of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)reflects geochemical processes of groundwater formation andinfluences the calculation of C-14 age of calcareous deposits. The simplest method of determining the initial activity would beto measure C-14 activity of either bicarbonate precipitated fromwater or of calcium carbonate collected in sediment traps. However, the present C-14 activity of DIC cannot be used tocorrect the age of old carbonate sediments because of thecontamination of ground and surface waters with bomb-producedC-14. We describe several methods of experimental determinationof the initial activity, which we used in a case study ofgeochronology of carbonates in the Plitvice Lakes area.

Summary: Recent sediment cores, 30 cm long, from Prošće and Kozjak lakeslocated in Plitvice National Park, central Croatia, were analyzedfor C-14 activity of lake marl and organic carbon in thesediment, the ratio of stable isotopes, and the distribution ofdiatoms. The abrupt increase of a population of diatom speciesCyclotella operculata unipunctata and Achnantes clevei rostratain the uppermost 5 cm layer was attributed to eutrophication ofthe lake water. C-14 activity measurements helped to determinethe time period of an increased input of nutrients into lakes. The increase of the C-14 activity in lake sediment due to thebomb effect was used for age determination of the depth profiles.A molecular characterization of the hydrocarbons isolated fromthe sediment was also performed.

Summary: We have conducted a comparative study of subexcitation electrons(energy below 8 eV) in H2 and D2 gases by using the Spencer-Fanotheory and its simplified version, the continuous-slowing-down approximation. The study focuses on differences between H2 andD2 (the isotope effect). From an elementary estimate, one wouldexpect the isotope effect to be about a factor of two for variousphysical quantities relevant to electron degradation. Ourdetailed analysis, however, shows that the isotope effect isabout 1.7 at energies where no significant differences occur inthe cross sections for the two gases. The isotope effect is verypronounced below 0.1 eV, where the cross sections becomeincreasingly different.

Summary: The subexcitation electrons having energy 8 eV and 0.6 eV ingaseous H2 and D2 have been studied by using the Spencer-Fanotheory and its simplified version of the continuous-slowing-downapproximation (CSDA). The CSDA gives a mean value of the exactSpencer-Fano degradation spectrum, except in the very low energyregion, where the ratio of the energy loss to the kinetic energybecomes large. In the same energy region differences between thetwo gases (H2 and D2) become very pronounced because of theincreasingly different cross sections.

Summary: A short review of models for energy dissipation and calculationof the mean energy required to produce an ion pair (W) in regulargas mixtures is presented. Generalized formulae for more thantwo gas components in a mixture are given. Recently published Wvalues for electrons, protons and alpha-particles intissue-equivalent gas mixtures and their pure constituent gasesare compiled. The W values for particles of various incidentenergies in TE gases are calculated according to the presentedmodels and compared with the measured W values. In methane-TE gasall models predict W values within 2% for all particles. The Wvalues calculated according to the simplest model inpropane-based TE gas are much higher than the measured W valuesfor all incident particles over the whole energy range. Theapplicability of the described models to various gas mixturesis discussed.

Summary: Systematic physico-chemical measurements of water in the area ofPlitvice Lakes and Krka River show which conditions for calciteprecipitation must be fulfilled in an aquatic systems. Stableisotope content (C-13 and O-18) in travertines confirms biogenicorigin of carbon, and indicates fairly constant climaticconditions during the sedimentation process over a long period oftime. C-14 dating showed that most of the travetine samples along the river banks range in age from recent to 7000-8000 yearsBP. The age of old travertine deposits was determined by230Th/234U and 234U/238U method. It turned out that theage of old travertine coincides with that of warm, humidinterglacials, mostly oxygen stage 5 and possible 11 and 12.

Summary: Systematic measurement of physico-chemical conditions for calciteprecipitation in freshwaters was performed in the Plitvice Lakesarea, and some measurements were performed also at other karst springs and rivers. There are considerable differences in valuesof the measured quantities (temperature, pH, conductivity, alkalinity, concentration of calcium, magnezium, oxygen and CO2)among various freshwaters. It is concluded that precipiation ofcalcite in form of travertine is possible if certainphysico-chemical conditions are fulfilled.

Summary: The work presents the results of both the theoretical and theexperimental investigation of interaction of low-energy electronsand photons with gas mixtures. Calculation of the W value (mean energy required to form an ionpair) and the Fano factor (F) in a regular mixture of Ar and H2by the Spencer-Fano method shows that both W and F are smoothfunctions of the mixture composition, and that different totalionization cross sections of the gas components determine theenergy partition in regular gas mixtures. A new formula forcalculating the Fano factor in a regular mixture is proposed andtested on several gas mixtures. The W and F values forisobutane-based tissue-equivalent gas mixture are calculated andexperimentally determined here for the first time. A linear relation between F and the ratio W/I (I is the firstionization potential) for high-energy electrons is obtained andtested on several examples. In the experimental part of the work various aspects ofinteraction of 5.9 keV photons with the argon - isobutanemixtures are studied. These are: gas amplification, relativevariance of single electron spectra (f), mean energy W, Fanofactor, and energy resolution. It is found that all theinvestigated quantities depend on both the concentration fractionof isobutane in the mixture and on the total pressure of themixture. When the partial pressure of isobutane is high enough, the mixture behaves as the regular one. When the partial pressureof isobutane is lower than 60 mbar, the W and the F valuesdecrease, but the relative variance f increases. As the finalresult, the expected improvement of the energy resolution inirregular gas mixtures has not been observed.

Summary: Tissue spheres 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0 micrometers indiameter were simulated using a wall-less spherical counterfilled with a propane-based tissue-equivalent gas.Microdosimetric spectra corresponding to these site sizes weremeasured for five neutron energies (0.22, 0.44, 1.5, 6, and 14MeV) and the related mean values yF and yD were calculated forseveral site sizes and neutron energies. An elaborate calibrationtechnique combining soft x-rays, a Fe-55 photon source, and aCm-244 collimated source of alpha particles was used throughoutthe measurement. The spectra and their mean values are comparedwith theoretically calculated values for ICRU tissue. Theagreement between the calculated and the measured data is good inspite of a systematic discrepancy, which could be attributed, inpart, to the difference in elemental composition between thetissue-equivalent gas and plastic used in the counter, and theICRU standard tissue used in the calculation.
    Keywords: microdosimetry, neutrons
