Summary: A method of computing the exchange time of freshwater and marinewater in a stratified estuary is presented. The method is basedon the inflow of the river and its tributaries, the depth of thehalocline and salinity in the upper brackish water layer. Duringwinter the exchange time of freshwater in Krka estuary is between6 and 20 days, whereas during summer it is up to 180 days. Therenewal time of water in the Krka estuary as a whole may beapproximated by the exchange time.
Keywords: exchange time, residence time, stratified estuary, Krka

Summary: Before the onset of wind in the Krka estuary, a sharp haloclineextends from 2.5 to 4 m below the surface, separating the upperbrackish water layer from the lower marine layer. Strong wind (20m/s) induces a tilt of the halocline surface so that downwind (5km wind fetch) the halocline is pushed to 4.6 m below thesurface. Wind driven currents induce a vertical gyre within theupper layer and a gyre in the opposite direction in the lowerlayer. The role of wind induced oxygenating of the bottom layeris discussed.

Summary: Current and temperature data, taken during 1986 and 1987 in theKrka estuary (east Adriatic coast), are analysed for evidence ofhigh-frequency oscillations. The spectra computed from data showpeaks corresponding to periods of 2.8 h and 45 min. Analyses ofthe 45 min reveal that these oscillations occur intemittently. They probably represent internal waves travelling down theestuary. The waves appear to be generated by the interaction ofthe second-order surface seiches with topography. The system ofcoupled surface seiches and internal waves may be either of localmeteorological origin or externally forced at the mouth of theestuary.

Summary: A subsurface temperature maximum recorded in the highlystratified Krka estuary is described. The maximum is located onthe lower edge of a steep halocline and reaches the highesttemperature in the Adriatic Sea. Temperatures of up to 31 oC wererecorded. The development of the maximum and its persistenceduring summer is the consequence of a relatively thin transparentbrackish layer while the entrainment of the seawater is weak. Themaximum may be recorded from the middle of April until the end ofOctober. Following consequences are discussed: effect on verticalmixing across the halocline, effect on equilibrium of chemicalspecies and on decomposition rate of freshwater phytoplankton.

Summary: Individual surface-active particles (SAP) in aqueousenvironmental samples can be categorized through coalescence withmodel hydrophobic interface. Each coalescence event is recordedas an electrical signal. As the signal is a current transient, the sequence of fast processes leading to the formation of acondensed film can be studied. In Krka estuary, SAP are present in the maximum concentrations atthe halocline ( 10**7 to 5*10**8 particles/l of size >1 um).Particles can be viewed as oily droplets. Discussed are processesleading to formation of organic films and and accumulation ofmercury at the halocline.

Summary: Nutrients, chlorophyll a, primary production and standardoceanographic parameters were measured seasonally from 1983 to1988 along the axis of a karstic estuary of the central AdriaticSea (Krka estuary). Because of anthropogenic phosphorusdischarges, the surface-layer orthophosphate concentrations (upto 1.7 mmol/m**3), phytoplankton biomass and primary productionwere significantly higher in Šibenik Bay than in other estuarinesubregions and the coastal sea. Effects of introduction ofnitrogen and silica are also discussed. It is concluded thatanthropogenic nutrient inflows should be reduced to re-estabilisha natural nutrient environment.

Summary: The occurence of hypoxia in October 1988 in the Krka estuary isdescribed with special reference to Prokljan Lake. Hypoxiadevelops near the bottom in autumn in response to the temperaturemaximum that appears this time of the year. The decompositionrate of naturally present organic matter increases, creatinghigher biological oxygen demand. When an extensive marinephytoplankton bloom appears below the halocline in Prokljan Lake, dissolved oxygen near the bottom decreases further. The hypoxiamay be so severe that it causes massive mortality of benthicmacro fauna. In the absence of rains and a slow exchangerate of water, hypoxia may be recorded throughout the winter.

Summary: A subsurface bloom of the marine dinoflagellate Gonyaulaxpolyedra Stein was observed in October 1988 in the central partof the Krka estuary (east Adriatic coast) as a 6 m thichred-brownish layer, located below the halocline. The bloom mighthave been initiated by the excystment in the shallower part ofthe estuary, where temperature near the bottom exceeded 20 oC.The autumn of 1988 was exceptionally dry, river flow was smalland the brackish layer was 2 m thich an transparent. The supplyof nutrients for growth came from sinking and decomposition offreshwater phytoplankton at the halocline and in the marinelayer.

Summary: We propose a novel experimental technique for thecharacterization of the initial steps of organic monolayerformation at a fluid interface: mercury/aqueous dispersion ofinsoluble surfactants. The attachment of the organic film to theelectrode substrate through the collision and spreading ofinsoluble surfactant droplets provides a convenient in situtechnique for the preparation and investigation of organic ororganometallic films.

Summary: In this report the first thionine monolayer at platinum andsulphur-modified platinum is investigated using the methodologydeveloped for methylene blue/leucomethylene blue as a modelsystem. The results imply that reversible adsorption of thioninemolecules takes place on the surface already covered by theirreversibly adsorbed monolayer of electro-inactive thionine.

Summary: The effect of S-adlayer preparation on the voltammetric behaviourof self-assembled monolayers of the heteroaromatic moleculesthionine and methylene blue was studied by varying the S-adatomconcentration at the polyoriented platinum electrode from zero tosaturation coverage. Phenothiazines can be used as redox probes for S-adlayers in therange of S-adatom concentrations where the classicalelectrochemical approach is insensitive.

Summary: The mediated reduction of a series of phenyl bromides, substituted with electron-withdrawing and electron-donatinggroups, was investigated at tin cathodes. A new electroanalyticalmethod for examining the reactivity of organic substrates withthe Me2Py(Sn5) composite has been introduced. It has been shownthat substitution on the phenyl ring did not have a significanteffect upon the rate of reaction.

The dissolved metal concentrations inthe freshwater end-member are the same order of magnitude asthose observed in unpolluted rivers of the world and are inaccordance with the carbonate nature of the catchment of the KrkaRiver which is located in the national park.

Summary: Suspended matter, particulate and dissolved organic carbon anddissolved inorganic carbon were measured seasonally from 1987 to1989 in the Krka estuary. Carbon inputs by the river are low. Theaccumulation of particulate organic carbon at the interface andthe production of dissolved organic carbon suggest that anenhanced biological activity influences the organic matterbudget.

Summary: The interaction of the methylene blue (MB+) molecules with thesurface of Hg electrode has been investigated using purelyelectrochemical methodology. The interaction of MB+ molecules wasfound to be so strong that the redox signal of the innermonolayer is well separated from the signal of overlayingmolecules as in the case of underpotential deposition of metallicphases. The phase transition during the redox change in the innermonolayer is analyzed according to BFT model for 2Delectrocrystallization.
