Summary: Eutrophication is a state of estuarine ecosystem under increased inflow of nutrients. Investigated are fundamental physical, chemical and biological processes in the stratified estuary and coastal sea and their effect on eutrophication. By application of existing and development of new methods, organic films are characterized and their role in eutrophication and accumulation of pollutants is investigated. Of particular importance is the accumulation of organic particles and pollutants at density interfaces (halocline), formation of organic films and their rola in the eutrophication phenomena, and fate of pollutants. Organic thin films are characterized at natural interfaces (halocline) and model interfaces (electrode/solution). Transformations of dissolved organic matter and particles, including the unicellular organisms, are studied at model interfaces. Organic and organometalic thin films of high charge density are investigated as new materials for sensors. Models are developed for reconstruction and prediction of consequences in the estuary and neighbouring coastal sea of man induced changes in nutrient and pollutant inflow.

Research goals: GOALS: By applying the existing and by developing new methods of characterization of biogeochemical processes and organic structures at the salinity gradient (halocline) and by formulation of new models of transport of substances and biological interactions, following will be examined: 1) organic films which are formed by transformation of allochtonous surface active particles and phytoplankton exudates which includes: condensation, heterocoalescence and spreading; 2) transport processes of particles, dissolved matter (inluding oxygen) and heat through the halocline as well as growth and transport of (fresh and marine) phytoplankton; 3) possibility to predict biological and chemical consequences of antropogenic and natural nutrient and pollutant inflows in estuaries and associated coastal seas. EXPECTED RESULTS: Understanding of: a) formation of organic films on the salinity gradient; b) impact of material input on formation and decomposition of the films; c) impact of atmospheric perturbations and sea currents on the film stability; d) hydrophobic pollutant accumulation on the film; e) heat transport and its effect on primary production and degradation rates; f) oxygen transport; h) dynamics of phytoplankton. New methods: a) Electrochemical counter of surface active particles; b) method for characterization of individual surface active particles and phytoplankton cells; c) method for preparation and characterization of organic and organometallic films; d) molecular detectors for characterization of adatoms; e) method for calculating exchange of water masses and particles in estuaries; f) model of particle transport in 2-dimensions; g) method for calculating total balance of nutrients and pollutants in estuaries and coastal seas; h) ecological model of the dynamics of phytoplankton and oxygen in a stratified estuary and coastal seas. NEW MATERIALS: a) stable 2-dimensional compounds of heteroaromatic molecules with sulphur; b) organometalic films with high electron density.
