Summary: The distribution of 137Cs through soil layers has been
investigated by field sampling. The investigation deals with
137Cs concentration found after Chernobyl accident. The
relationship between important soil characteristics, total
precipitation and cesium distribution are analyzed. Cesium
is strongly sorbed in the top soil layer and its migration
downward is limited.

Summary: The activity of 226Ra, 228Ra, 235U and 238U was measured
in different types of phosphate fertilizers and waters.
The estimated annual deposition of radionuclides in soils
of the agricultural and well field area in Kanovci is
high. High uranium concentrations in surface water,
shallow groundwater and water from drainage channels are
caused by phosphate fertilizer application in agriculture
on the Kanovci area.

Summary: Cesium in honey corresponds well with 137Cs contamination
of territory in the Republic of Croatia. Equal cesium
concentration in the surface soil layer results in higher
cesium activities in honey in the case of meadow flowers
honey bee pasture than in cases when pasture is based on
bush or tree flowers. Higher 137Cs activity in pollen than
in honey indicates that cesium behaves analogously to
potassium.

Summary: Radioactive contamination of the Republic of Croatia
territory with "pre-Chernobyl" 137Cs has been obtained by
supstracting Chernobyl-derived 137Cs from the total 137Cs.
The results represent "old" (weapon testing-derived) 137Cs
distribution in soil from surface to 262.5 mm depth. The
Croatia territory has been contaminated rather uniformly,
according to long term duration of atmospheric nuclear
weapon experiments.

Summary: The knowledge of function which describes cesium vertical
distribution in soil is of essential importance for
understanding of sorption-desorption processes and
radionuclide transfer to vegetation. Several exponential
equations suitable for description of cesium distribution
in soil are discussed. Experimental basis was cesium
activity measurement in 4 vertical soil profile segments.
Function Y=A*e(blnD+c(lnd)2) - K provides the best fit for
cesium radioactivity changes with soil depth.

dependence on honey type as well as on cesium content in
different segments of vertical soil profile. Cesium
transfer factor from soil into honey is higher for cases
of bush and/or tree flowers bee pasture than for cases of
meadow-flowers bee pasture. Cesium content in soil
interval in which plant root sistems are developed is main
factor controlling calculated 137Cs transfer factors into
honey.

Summary: Beta and gamma radioactivity of wastewater from medical
institutions was measured. Law permits only 148 Bq/m3 of
beta-activity in wastewaters and practicaly each result
was too high. Gamma-spectrometry shows that 131J occurrs
in 66% cases, while its activity was too high in 12%
cases. Discharge of these wastewaters had been postponed
till the day when 131J activity had fallen under the
maximum permissible level.

Summary: Two and half months after Chernobyl contamination-peak,
the samples of various soil types are collected and 134Cs
was measured. Approximately 78.2% of 134Cs was found in
the first 5 cm of soil profile in loam-podzol soils, 72.3%
in flysch soils, 71% in terra rossa soils and only 55.2%
in siltous soils. Relatively high 134Cs activity in deeper
layers, especially in clay rich soils and terra rossa,
could be attributed to the deep desiccation cracks.

Summary: The 137Cs activity was determined in soils collected at
Istra peninsula in regular sampling net. The smoothed
results are used for 137Cs contamination chart
construction. The ratio between maximum and minimum
contaminated areas is more than 20:1. Variations in cesium
activity level in Istrian soils are caused by Chernobyl
fallout. Weapon testing-derived fallout, as a consequence
of numerous events over an extended period which minimizes
any local variation, can be treated as generally uniform.

Summary: 226Ra/228Ra activity ratio in the soils is the result of
uranium and thorium concentrations in the parent rock and
migration processes during pedogenesis and in soils
itself. Petrological composition, depositional
environment, vertical and horizontal facies distribution
are features which played key role during weathering, the
karstification and karst morphology-forming processes.
Areas with the significant outflow possibilities are
characterised with relatively low 226Ra/228Ra ratio.

Summary: Natural gamma-activity in soils is the result of
radionuclide concentrations in parent rocks, the result of
complex biogeochemical processes and human activities.
Natural gamma-activity in carbonate-derived soils is about
550 Bq/kg 40K, relatively uniformly distributed, and
comprises about 64% of measured gamma-activity. The lowest
natural gamma-activity are observed in very well drained
soils derived from the Middle and Upper Eocene flysch
sediments.

Summary: 137Cs concentration was measured in flowers, pollen and
honey by gamma-spectrometry. The samples were collected
from Republic Croatia territory four years after Chernobyl
accident. Activity of 137Cs in pollen, higher than in
honey, indicates that cesium behaves analogously to
potassium. The results show that equal cesium
concentration in surface soil layer results in higher
cesium activities in honey in cases of meadow flowers
honey bee pasture, than in cases when pasture was based on
bush or tree flowers.

Summary: Specific activities of 40K, 228Ra, 226Ra, 238U and 137Cs
were determined in Istrian soils by gamma-spectrometry.
The supposed specific activities dependencies on
geological composition of basic rocks were proved right
and radiometric charts of Istria were constructed. The
observed activity ratios of 226Ra/228Ra and 238U/226Ra
point to the fact of geological composition dependence as
well as to uranium and both radium isotopes migration
processes.
