Summary: Schiff bases, 2-(salicylideneamino)pyridine
(1),3-(salicylideneaminomethyl)pyridine
(2),2-amino-3-(salicylideneamino)pyridine (3)
and2-3-bis-(salicylideneamino)pyridine (4) were synthetized
andcharacterized by elemental analysis and spectrometric methods. The
enolimino form of prepared compounds was confirmed insolution as well as in
the solid state. The Schiff bases ofdiamine did not show tendency to form
dihydroimidazole andimidazole rings.
All Schiff bases form complexes with copper(II), nickel(II),cobalt(II) and
zinc(II). In systems containing metal acetates, equilibrium is achieved
faster with respect to chloride system.Metal to ligand ratios of complexes,
determined in ethanolicsolutions, were ML and ML2. Apparent stability
constants decreasein order Cu > Ni > Co and 4 > 3 > 2 > 1, respectively.
Thecorresponding solid complexes were isolated and characterized.
Analytical applicability of the investigated Schiff bases inextraction and
spectrometric determination of copper(II) wasconsidered by parallel use of
UV/VIS and AAS spectrometry. Amongtested ligands,
2,3-bis-(salicylideneamino)pyridine is the mostsensitive reagent. Effective
extraction is achieved by aligand/metal ratio > 10 and pH value of the
aqueous phase above6. The ions EDTA, zinc(II),, cobalt(II),
nickel(II),chromium(III), iron(III) and aluminium(III) interfere
whenpresent in equimolar concentrations.

Summary: The extraction of tungsten(VI) and tungsten(V) from aqueous
hydrochloric acid solutions with 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-(4-tolyl)-4-pyridone
(HY) dissolved in chloroform was studied. Tungsten(VI) is quantitatively
extracted with HY from the aqueous solution in the range 0.8-8 M
hydrochloric acid concentration as a complex with formula WO2Y2. However,
tungsten(V) with HY is very simple, fast and selective and the extraction
of tungsten(V) as a mixed ligand complex is also applicable for the
spectrophotometric determination of tunsten are: 5-6 M HCl, 0.04 M SnCl2,
0.1 M KNCS in the aqueous phase and 3x10-3 M HY in chloroform. Tungsten(V)
can be also extracted with HY without the presence of thiocyanate ions, but
not quantitatively.
The extraction of a ruthenium(III)-thiocyanate complex with
tetraphenylphosphonium chloride in chloroform was also studied and a new
method for the spectrophotometric determination of ruthenium in the organic
phase is described. It is based on the extraction of ruthenium as an
ion-associated complex, formed between the ruthenium(III)-thiocyanate anion
and the tetraphenylphosphonium cation. The extracted complex in chloroform
has a maximum absorbance at 560 nm.
The compositions of all extracted complexes were studied
spectrophotometrically.

Title: Trace Metal Determination in Acetic Acid by Inductively
Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES)

Summary: The effect of acetic acid on trace metal determination
byinductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES)was
investigated. The changes in analytical line intensities inanalysis of
dilute solutions with acetic acid compared to waterwere interpreted. The
alterations of physical properties in thepresence of acetic acid primarily
lowered the free uptake rate ofsolutions and aerosol mean droplet diameter.
The line intensityratios for acetic acid and water corrected for modified
uptakerate were less than one and departures were different whichindicated
that acetic acid affected both the nebulization processand excitation
conditions in the plasma.
A method for trace metal determination in 3% acetic acid assimulant in
estimation of health validity of packaging materialsand in 9-10% vinegar
was worked out. An analytical procedure forconcentrated acetic acid (80%
and glacial acetic acid) wasdeveloped. It included preconcentration of
metal by evaporatioanof samples to dryness and final analysis of aqueous
solution. At15 mm observation height 1200 W applied RF-power and 1.0 l
min-1carrier gas flow rate the detection limits for Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni,Pb, Al,
Cd and Zn were almost equal for aqueous solution andsolutions of 3% and 10%
acetic acid. The measured short timestability was less than 2% RSD and the
long-term stability lessthan 5% RSD.

Title: The characteristics and fluorimetric application of Schiff
bases derived from aminopyridines

Summary: The characterstics of Schiff bases derived from
salicylaldehyde and aminopyridine were studied by IR and UV/Vis
spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and
X-ray analysis.
It was found that in crystal state all investigated Schiff bases take
anolimino form with strong hydrogen bond between hydrochloric hydrogen and
azomethyne nitrogen. The eanolimino-ketoamino tautomeric equilibrium in
solutions was shifted towards the formation of ketaoamino form by the
increase of solvent dielectricity constant. The tautomeric constants of all
compounds in series of solvents of increasing polarity, as well as
protonation constants in the system methanol/water 1/4, were determined on
the basis of UV spectroscopic data. In solutions containing organic
solvents and water all compounds were fluorescent. The intensity of
emission was dependent on pH value and on solvent composition. The
corresponding quantum yields were determined in dioxane/water system 1/1.
The sensitive and selective method for spectrofluorimetric determination of
Al3+ with N,N'-bis(salicyliden)pyridinediamine was worked out in detail.
