Summary: The project deals with various analytically interesting systems, investigations being oriented towards their applicability as well as to theoretical research. New analytical reagents, such as Schiff bases, 4-pyridone derivatives and organophosphorous compounds, are isolated and characterized. Their analytical applicability is investigated and reaction mechanisms are proposed. The well-known commercially available heterocyclic azo compounds and thiocyanates are very selective and sensitive reagents for metal ion determination. Their complex formation is a powerful tool for the explanation of chemical equilibria as it leads to the method modifications with even better sensitivity and selectivity towards metal ions. The isolation and reagent characterization, its aqueous and organic solution chemistry, metal ion complex formation and investigation of isolated complexes lead to the development of new and more efficacious analytical procedures either in the quantitative determination or the separation of metal ions. The atomic emission spectroscopic methods make a separate part ofthe project. The investigations are oriented to the development of the method itself, to possible combination with chromatographic methods, and its applicability to analysis of various complex systems, such as synthetic zeolites, product quality control, determination of metal traces in biological samples and others.

Keywords: complexes, transition metal complexes, stability constants, extraction, spectrophotometric determination, separation, ICP-AES, Schiff bases, 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol, thiocyanates, 4-pyridone derivatives, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, hafnium, tungsten, ruthenium

Research goals: There is special interest in analytical chemistry development, both on the field of fundamental and applied research. Thisproject is based on both these aspects. Its aim is assembling, evaluating and interpreting the data concerning new conceptionsof reactions and equilibria of organic compounds, inorganicspecies and their interactions. Various reagents, such as heterocyclic azo compounds, thiocyanates, Schiff bases, 4-pyridones and organophosphorouscompounds are used for metal determination and separation. Thecomplex extraction into the organic solvent often enhances thesensitivity and selectivity of analytical reaction. The solutionreaction mechanisms and characterization of the prepared complexcontribute to the general knowledge of the analytical systemchemistry. The investigation of the precipitation, coagulationand adsorption are useful steps in theseparation chemistry. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy is one ofthe most powerful techniques in metal and some non-metalanalyses. Methods are developed for analysis of complex samples, such as for synthetic zeolites, industrial products andbiological materials. Research is oriented also to the methoditself, and involves the influence of organic solvents on theexcitation characteristics of the plasma source and thepossibility of ICP-HPLC coupling for the environmental tracemetalanalysis. The framework of this project enables elaboration of graduationand postgraduation theses and doctoral disertations, one of itsaims being the education in the broad field of analyticalchemistry.
