Summary: Various synthetic approaches to 2,3-dehydro-
and3,4-dehydro-1-propionylpiperidines 12,13 and to their 1-propylcongeners
14,15,-two pairs of unsaturated, regioisomericprecursor of
S-(-)-3-PPP(S-(-)-3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-1-propylpyperidine, 20)
wereinvestigated. Compounds 12 and 13 were prepared by
regioselectiveelimination of water in 11. Preparation of 14 and 15 by
twodifferent methods is described. The ratio of the E/Z isomers atthe
C(O)-N bond in 11-13 was determined by 13C-NMR, andseparation of the
enantiotopic 1H-NMR signals in the enantiomersof 18 and 19 was investigated
with chiral shift reagent Eu(tfc)3.Hydrogenation of 15 was performed with
five different Rh(I)catalytic complexes, affording the O-methyl-congener of
3-PPP 19.Complete conversion of 15 into 19 was only achieved at
elevatedtemperature and/or pressure to give the R- or S-isomer with
lowenantioselectivity (7-18% e.e.).

Summary: A series of bidentate nitrogen ligands (3-8), and their (Rh
(I)(NBD) (N-N)) ClO4 complexes 11-14 (NBD-norbornadiene,N-N-dinitrogen
ligand) were prepared. Conformational propertiesand stability of 4 and its
catalytic complex 12 were report.Catalytic activity of complexes 11 and 12
in hydrogenation ofcyclohexane is compared with 22, a complex that
contains2,2'-bipyridyl as the "standard" ligand. Chiroptical data ofchiral
ligands 5,6 and their Rh(I) complexes 13,14 are reported.

Summary: Catalytic hydrogen transfer in the
cyclohexanone/2-propanolsystem by complexes formed in situ of Rh2(OAc)4 and
the nitrogenligands of 1,4-benzodiazepine (1,4-BD) derivatives 1-8,
isstudied. The positive relation between kin and (1,4-BD)/Rh ratioindicated
the homogeneous nature of the catalytic process,proved by the absence of
the inhibiting effect of added mercury(Hg). A promoting effect of hydroxy
ions on the rate wasestablished, and the relation between ligand structure
andcatalytic activity of the complex, expressed by kobs and progresscurves
for the hydrogen transfer process, is discussed.

Summary: Cu complexes 4-6 are prepared from N-cyanoazomethines 1-3
andmolecular structure of 4b is determined by x-ray structuralanalysis. The
basis structural unit is the Cu(N=C-N=C(SCH3)2)Cl2molecule as part of one
dimensional polymer along b-axis.N-cyanoazomethine ligand 1 is coordinated
with its N-cyano moietyat the Cu-N bond distances 1.949(3) and 1.998(4) A,
whereas theCl atoms act as bridging ligands at the Cu-Cl distances
of2.459(1) and 2.327(1) A. The tetrahedron around Cu atoms sharestwo
corners, occupied by chlorine atoms, with two neighbouringtetrahedra
separated by Cu...Cu distance of 3.8660(7) a.Structural and spectroscopic
data for 4-6 and for some previouslydetermined congeners, allow to propose
a mechanistic pathway forthe Cu(I) catalyzed vinyl-like substitution
in2-methylthio-2-methylamino-N-cyanoazomethyne (2) by
ethylenimine,affording 2-ethylenimino-2-methylamino-N-cyanoazomethyne
(7),crucial intermediate in ecologically favourable synthesis of aworldwide
used anti-ulcer drug cimetidine (8).

Summary:
S-alpha-(Methyl-(1-(substituted-phenyl)-2-(2'-pyrido)-1-ethylidene)benzylam
ines 15-21 and their Rh(I) complexes 22-28 are preparedand their
chiroptical and conformational properties are studied.Free ligands are
present as enamines in the solution and in thesolid state, but are bound to
Rh(I) in the imine form. The CDspectra confirm that complexation of 15-21
induces bothstructural change and strong conformational perturbations.
Themolecular structures in the crystal are reported for the
chiral1,5-bisnitrogen ligand 18, and its Rh(norbornadiene)2
perchloratecomplex 25. The absolute conformation of the chromophore in
18inverts on binding to Rh(I) in 25. The value of the torsionalangle about
C10-C9-C16-C21 bond (-69.9o) in 18, which defines thetwisted stilbene-like
chromophore, turns for 25 into 75.0 o.Chiral S-(-)-methylbenzyl subunit in
18 has a Cl-N1-C9-C10torsional angle of 175.2o, whereas on binding to Rh(I)
in 25 thisangle changes to -178.4o. The absolute conformation around
thestyrene-like arrangement of the bonds in 15-21 can be deducedfrom the
strong positive Cotton effect at ca. 350 nm.Cyclopropanation of styrene
with ethyl diazoacetate, in thepresence of in situ generated Cu(I)
complexes of chiral1,5-bidentate ligands 15-21, yielded
cis/trans2-phenylcyclopropan-1-carboxylic acid ethylesters with 5-21%
e.e.Through generally low, the enantioselectivity was somewhatehigher for
ortho-(16-18) than for para-(19-21) substituted phenylderivatives.

Summary: (14C)-UL-2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,3-dicyanobenzene
(chlorothalonil,2) was prepared by catalytic chlorination
of(14C)-UL-dicyanobenzene (1) on activated carbon, in a tubularreactor at a
controlled temperature and in a stream of chlorine.Optimization of the
ratio between the catalyst (activated carbon,30-60 mesh) and the inert
support (glass beads, silica gel0.2-0.5 mm) as well as the geometry of the
column reactor, thetemperature of the preheated chlorine and the
reactiontemperature was studied in ca 90 "cold" experiments. At 300 oCgas
temperature, 300 oC reactor temperature, 5 mL/min flow rateof chlorine, and
a catalyst:silica support: 1 ratio (1:7:0.25),the reactor design produces
(14C)-UL 2 in over 90% chemical yieldand ca 95% purity (GLC). On
purification by column chromatographyon silica gel, with toluene-n-hexane
92:3, v/v) as eluant, 99.6%pure 14C-UL 2 (sp. act. 9.2 MBq/mmol, 0.242
mCi/mmol) isobtained.

In situ prepared Cu(I) complexes of the ligands 1-7 were testedas
enantioselective catalysts in cyclopropanation of styrene

ethylester.Enantioselectivity of this reaction (up to 20% e.e.) is

Summary: Connected with our work on hydrogen transfer reaction by
Rh(II)complexes with nitrogen bases, we studied in detail the
complexesobtained from dimeric rhodium(II)tetracarboxylates 1
and5-pyrido-1,4-benzodiazepine derivatives. Depending on thestructure of
chelated pyridobenzodiazepine two different typesof complexes were
obtained. The 5-pyrido-1,4-benzodiazepines areasymmetrically ligated in a
bidentate mode to one of the tworhodium atoms. Corresponding
4,5-dihydro-pyridobenzodiazepinesare symmetrically ligated afforded
monodentate complex 3.
