Summary: Preparatiion of the chiral nitrogen ligands will be
performed, and their complexes with Rh(I), Cu(II), and some other metals
will be isolated and characterized. Structure and conformation of the
complexes in solution will be studied by NMR and CD, whereas in some cases
solid state structure will be determined by X-ray. Catalytic efficacy
of organometallic complexes with chiral nitrogen ligands will be studied
for some selected reactions, as are cyclopropanation, transfer
hydrogenation, and hydrogenation with dyhydrogen.
Research goals: The main targets of the proposed research are: a.
Synthesis of new chiral ligands with nitrogen as the donor heteroatom, both
of C1 and C2 symmetry, and preparation of their homogeneous catalytic
complexes with Rh(I), Rh(II), and Cu(II) ions, which will be examined in
enantioselective hydrogenation, hydrogen transfer, and cyclopropanation. b.
Detailed knowledge of the mechanism of hydrogenation with molecular
hydrogen, catalyzed by Rh(I) complexes of bidentate nitrogen ligands. It is
expected that the proposed research will broaden our knowledge of
correlation between structural and conformational properties of chiral
ligands in catalytically active complexes, and degree of their
enantioselectivity. Successful application of some catalysts in solving
some technical problems-enantioselective synthesis of biologically or
commercially interesting compounds is expected.
