Summary: Twenty six European brown bears were captured, radio-collared,and tracked in the Plitvice and Risnjak NP areas from 1981through 1991. The largest and mean ranges were 224 and 147 km2for males, and 147 and 58 km2 for females, respectively. Themaximum and mean day-to-day movements were 8.5 and 1.5 km,respectively. National parks Plitvice Lakes and Risnjak are tosmall as a bear habitat.

Summary: Sera from 22 European brown bears from Croatia were tested to 18viral and rickettsial agents. Serologic evidence of exposure wasfound to the following agents: Bhanja virus, Tahyna virus, WestNile virus, Naples sandfly virus, human adenovirus, influenza Aand B virus, cytomegalovirus, parainfluenza virus 1, Chlamidiapsittaci, Coxiella burnetii and canine parvvirus 2. This may bethe first report of antibodies to CPV-2 in bears.
Keywords: European brown bear, Ursus arctos, viruses, rickettsias, serology, Croatia

Summary: From 1981 to 1991, sera of 42 European brown bears were testedfor antibodies against 12 Leptospira interrogans serovars.Diagnostic levels of antybody were found in 17 (40%) sera; in 11of 32 free-living bears and in 6 of 10 captive ones. Sv.australis was found in 6 bears, sejroe in two, canicola inone, and icterohaemorrhagiae in one bear.
Keywords: European brown bear, Ursus arctos, leptospirosis, Leptospira interrogans, serovars, serology, survey, Croatia

Title: Food intake and mass gain of hand reared brown bear cubs

Authors:
Huber, Đuro (62925)
Kulier, Ignac
Poljak, Andrea
Devčić, Branka (123076)
Journal: Zoo Biology
Number: 6
ISSN: 0733-3188
Volume: 12
Year: 1993
Pages: from 525 to 533
Number of references: 7
Language: engleski
Summary: Amounts and types of food intake, as well as the growth rate of5 orphaned European brown bear cubs were monitored fromthe ages of 1 month through 3 years. Among 6 feed formulas used, the one which simulated the bears' milk (12% protein, 0.2%carbohidrates, 24% fat) showed the best conversion rate. High fatcontent increased, whereas high carbohydrate content decreasedthe conversion rates.
Keywords: European brown bear, Ursus arctos, food conversion, growth

Title: Mitochondrial DNA sequence divergence among some west European brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) populations. Lessons for conservation

Authors:
Randi, Etore
Huber, Đuro (62925)

Boscagli, Giorgio
Gentile, Leonardo
Journal: Acta Theriologica
ISSN: 0018-067x

Number of references: 36
Language: engleski
Summary: We used the polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing to study mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variability of brown bears (Ursus arctos) belonging to some western European populations. Small and isolated bear populations were apparently monomorphic exhibiting the risk of continuing future loss of gene diversity and increase of inbreading. Artifitial gene flow through restocking could alleviate inbreading depression in isolated bear populations, and mtDNA phylogeographic relationships may provide a framework for their sound genetic management. Croatian brown bears have been genetically closer to the Italian ones, compared to the bears from Pyrenees, Romania and America.

Title: Stradanja medvjeda u ratu

Authors:
Huber, Đuro (62925)
Journal: New Scientist
ISSN: 0262-4079
Volume: 142
Year: 1994
Pages: from 50 to 50
Language: engleski
Summary: The sufferings of bears due to the Serbian agressionon Croatia were desctibed. The rumors about the mass migrations of bears to Slovenia and further towards west were proved to be wrong.
Keywords: bear, war, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, migrations
