Summary: Brown bears and wolves are species which are disappearing in Europe, mostly due to the loss of habitat. Hence, the relatively stable populations in Croatia are of international importance. Economic development and the use of natural resources should be directed in the way which will not threaten the survival of bears and wolves. This project is studing various aspects of their biology and habitat requirements. The main objective is to gather data which can provide a timely warning about habitat and/or population changes that may threaten these species. The methods used include: radio-telemetry, sample analysis (blood, hair, smears, tooth, faeces, food), morphometry, questionnaire, GIS and habitat monitoring.

Keywords: European brown bear, Ursus arctos, wolf, Canis lupus, habitat, protection, population characteristics, Croatia, ecology, morphometry, home range and movements, endagered species

Research goals: Specific objectives are to acquire data on: 1. home range use bybrown bears and wolves, 2. biological characteristics (foodhabits, reproduction, mortality, populations trend, ethology), 3.morphology (body, sceleton, blood), 4. biochemistry (serum, histochemistry), 5. pathology, and 6. genetic relations ofpopulations. General objective is the aquisition of dataneccessary for understanding of ecological rules on which depends the of survival of brown bear and wolf populations in Croatia. The goal is to find out the strategy oflong term measures for protection of gene pool and optimal habitat management.
